Are you proposing that people married by government officials, rather than by ordained ministers, should not be able to marry?
What about people getting married in religious traditions that don’t recognize the Christian “god”, like Buddhism?
You are missing the point. Those that do not believe in the Christina God get married according to THEIR RELIGIOUS BELIEF! So create your own religion and get married. How hard is it for you to read that I am fine with civil unions for all? I have stated that several times, but an Atheist isn’t going to be married by a Priest. They are going to find someone to carry out a ceremony for them. If gays want to “get married” find someone that will marry them, but it is not going to be a religion.
Church of Elvis.
For He is King.
And Elvis saw them berating the poor recording artist, whose music was terrible and lyrics insipid, and Lo, the King said unto the mob: Let him who is without bad singles cast the first rhinestone.' And the mob turned down their eyes, each considering his own Don't Worry Be Happy or Man in the Mirror, and shuffled off. Thank you,’ said Elvis. `Thank you very much.’
And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden records; and in the midst of the seven golden records one like unto the Son of Zeke, clothed with a jumpsuit down to the foot, and girthed…er…girt about the paunch with rhinestones. His hairs were black like vinyl, as black as Brilcream; and his eyes, how they twinkled, his dimples, how merry…

You’re the one missing the point. Here it is again:
If an atheist can get married by someone that is not a priest, how does that translate to marriage being a religious ceremony?
Do you not understand that people can get married civilly, without needing to involve religion at all? If that is the case, how can marriage be the exclusive domain of religion?
Okay let me break this down for you. Marriage is when a man and a woman become spiritually one with the lord according to the Christian faith. If fucking aliens get married to snowmen in the church of Pluto and have their own belief then so be it, but you want religions that have been around for thousands of years to change their belief so you fit in. Make you own religion and call it marriage, call it the happy super fun time, or call it nothing. The point is you want to change what is the standard of marriage to fit your life style. Just create your own religion, cult, club and then make a ceremony you call marriage.

Hindus have literally thousands of Gods. Why limit yourself to the singular? Are those Gods not essential to a Hindu marriage, just as your God is essential to a Christian marriage?
As I have said Hindus get married in their own ceremonies. Get your own.

I didn’t ask about fucking aliens marrying snowmen in the church of Pluto. I asked about atheists marrying outside of any church or religion whatsoever. Are you claiming this doesn’t constitute a real marriage?
Also, you misstated my position. I couldn’t care less whether or not your fairy tales support gay marriage. Your religious beliefs mean nothing to me, as long as you don’t use them as an excuse for discriminating against people through civil laws that are supposed to be separate from religion.

I have stated repeatedly that civil unions are fine with me and they should exist. There is no reason to discriminate between anyone because America is a land of tolerance for all.
This country was founded on religious belief whether you believe it or not. Marriage is inherently religious. No an Atheist can get what they call a married, but all they really have done is joined in a civil union. I don’t care what they call it; it IS NOT marriage as defined by religion. That is why in an earlier post I asked and you ignored why do homosexuals even want to get married? It is a religious ceremony. The same goes for Atheist why would they want to get married?
I used the alien story to get my point across you apparently just didn’t see that.
Your sexual belief does not affect me so why should I change and why should religions change that have been around for thousands of years? If you don’t care about my belief why should I care about yours? The door swings both ways.
When you say you support civil unions, I assume you support granting all the same rights and responsibilities to civilly joined couples that are available through marriage?
It’s not what the atheist calls marriage, it is what the state calls marriage. According to the laws of our country, atheists can marry without needing to involve religion in any capacity. You are the one creating a different definition for marriage, not me.
As to why atheists or gays would want to marry, obviously not everyone agrees with you that marriage is a religious ceremony.
Why do you keep saying that I want you or your religion to change? I couldn’t care what you or your religion claim, as long as you stay out of my life.

Marriage has been around a lot longer then this government. Just because they call a civil union a marriage does not mean it is a marriage. I can call a tomato an apple, but it doesn’t change the fact that the tomato is in fact a tomato and it always has been a tomato. There is a difference between the two whether you see it or the state specifically states it.
You can call it whatever you want, but your “marriage” simply is not a marriage. It is a civil union.
To your first statement yes. Straight couples with civil unions should have the same rights as gay couples with civil unions for the 100th time.
Calling a tomato an apple doesn’t turn the tomato into an apple. It simply changes the terminology, and words evolve all the time.
Obviously, the United States disagrees with your definition of marriage. There is no absolute standard for a definition, and thus no way to insist that your definition is in any way superior to the definition used by the United States.
I never asked if you supported equal civil unions for straight and gay couples.
I asked if you support 100% equal rights for civil unions vs. marriage.

Sure why not and if you’re gay you get a free hat with every marriage. We’ll call it gay affirmative action.
For those favoring the preservation of “traditional marriage” based on the bible, the following Constitutional amendments should be adopted forthwith:
A. Marriage in the United States shall consist of a union between one man and one or more women. (Gen 29:17-28; II Sam 3:2-5)
B. Marriage shall not impede a man’s right to take concubines in addition to his wife or wives. (II Sam 5:13; I Kings 11:3; II Chron 11:21)
C. A marriage shall be considered valid only if the wife is a virgin. If the wife is not a virgin, she shall be executed. (Deut 22:13-21)
D. Marriage of a believer and a non-believer shall be forbidden. (Gen 24:3; Num 25:1-9; Ezra 9:12; Neh 10:30)
E. Since marriage is for life, neither this Constitution nor the constitution of any State, nor any state or federal law, shall be construed to permit divorce. (Deut 22:19; Mark 10:9)
F. If a married man dies without children, his brother shall marry the widow. If he refuses to marry his brother’s widow or deliberately does not give her children, he shall pay a fine of one shoe and be otherwise punished in a manner to be determined by law. (Gen 38:6-10; Deut 25:5-10)
G. In lieu of marriage, if there are no acceptable men in your town, it is required that you get your dad drunk and have sex with him (even if he had previously offered you up as a sex toy to men young and old), tag-teaming with any sisters you may have. Of course, this rule applies only if you are female. (Gen 19:31-36)

Or Atheists, or certain segments of Hinduism, or so forth and so forth. This is exactly why I have a problem with people bringing God into debates like this. Not everyone believe what everyone else believes.
How can you not bring God up in this debate? God is essential to a marriage. A civil union is different that is a government contract beneficial to both parties.
Then why is the Government justified in banning gay marriage, if it’s such a religious issue? They may be Christian, but they certainly aren’t the same sect as you.
Or, let’s call all the government contracts Civil Unions and abolish marriage on a Government level. You can still have your religious ceremony, but you need a civil union too for the government benefits. There’s a whole raft of problems there, but how about that for a start.
But no, because the ol’ Government can’t be handing out rights to just anyone!

Yea usmccds423…your out of your domain…better we let New Zealanders tell Americans what our institutions should be all about.

Oh, I’m sorry, I thought Marriage was an international thing. Silly me, it’s American only!
