GarageRocker's Balancing Act

12/30/25 - Cardio Day

Didn’t feel like running and am a bit beat up from my session yesterday so I opted for work density over weight today.

Circuit - 10 times through
10 bodyweight TRX rows
10 push ups
20 jumping lunges
10 windshield wipers hanging from pull up bar

It was a lot of work but the only thing that was tough from a muscular standpoint was the windshield wipers. Have gone back and forth between feeling like I need to puke and feeling like I’m having a fuckin heart attack since I finished the session because it pushed a gas bubble up under my sternum and it keeps yo-yoing up and down. When it’s low I feel like I need to heave, and when it’s high I feel like my heart is trying to explode. Don’t have IBD, kids, it’s not fun.

Usual warmup

Deadlift (back to conventional thanks to janky ass SI joints)

225 x 5
225 x 5
225 x 3
250 x 5
290 x 5
325 x 12

All deadlift sets superset with 15 hanging leg raises

Assistance Superset
Bodyweight Dips - 5 x 15
DB bent over rear laterals - 12 lbs - 5 x 12

Deadlift felt fuckin awesome today. The Nordic ham curls have really helped me link my entire posterior chain instead of relying on my Jupiter-sized ass and overactive low back. I didn’t have to think about firing pattern or anything, just grab the bar, get tight, and give’r hell. I ended up wrecking my SI joint on the left side with sumo so I backed my training max off a bit and went back to conventional. Assistance work felt tough but manageable, this intensity is likely ideal for me to target for all my sessions moving forward.

Extra work because I felt good
2 handed farmer’s walks - 55 lb dumbbells - 5 trips down and back across my basement
1 handed farmer’s walks - 95 lb dumbbell - 1 trip down and back across basement, switch hands, repeat X3

Felt really, really good today and have no idea why. Maybe because I had lunch and dinner with my family yesterday and they salt the everloving fuck outta their food? Either way, this was a fun workout. I reorganized all my music gear and it gave me the longest possible shot to walk. Helps that it looks cool as hell now too

I’m going to make a guess that you’re a Peavey fan?

And left handed?!

Yes to both! Haha first amp was a shitty Peavey Back Stage Plus that my aunt gave to me when I started playing. Then went to a ValveKing when I joined my first band. Quit for a while and then when I restarted in 2019 I decided I wanted to try and get really familiar with one brand so I didn’t end up always chasing the next thing. So throughout COVID I was buying broken made in USA Peaveys and fixing/flipping them. At this point I’ve owned just about every Peavey made before 2012 or so and my collection is just the amps I’ve found useful. The Ultra series is incredible (Ultra, Ultra+, XXX/3120, JSX/XXX2) and the Bandit family is one of the best solid state amps of all time.

Being left handed fuckin sucks. Haha but I did convince Agile to make that blue/purple color in a lefty which was really cool that they actually took my feedback. Those guitars are wild - neck-through design, good pickups with coil splitting, Grover tuners, and GraphTech nut and bridge for sub-$800 brand new. When I got the guitar the only thing I had to mess with was the intonation. Action was perfect

My father owned this amp and passed it down to me, it was my first as well! I recall the reverb pot not working and creating this horrible static buzzing when turning it up. That and the mid boost that just completely oversaturated everything almost into a fuzz-box style distortion.

I absolutely love the JSX and never understood why it wasn’t a more popular amp. Super versatile and it did distorted tones super well.

I was on the fence about buying a JSX and 5150 back in the day but opted for a Marshall DSL100 just due to ease of use and it being more in line with what my band was playing.

Recently sold off the dsl100, 1960a cab, blackstar stage 100 and mesa standard slant cab.

That is a super unique burst color and looks awesome! I can only imagine how difficult it must be finding not only lefty guitars, but lefty guitars worth purchasing.

I am personally an ibanez guy. Never thought I would be as I hated their low to low/mid level guitars, but I picked up an RG premium back in the early 2010’s and it’s my favorite guitar I own. Also own a 7 string fanned fret rg as well which sounds great.

Dude I loved my JSX, I just couldn’t justify a 120 watt head that weighs 65 pounds anymore. I managed to find a 60 watt XXX 112 combo and that’s been my go-to amp. Very similar to the JSX just with less controls over power amp (presence/resonance).

Dang that’s quite a bit to sell off, what’s your amp stable look like after the sale?

10% of all models and 5% of all colors are available left handed, and the ones that are available left handed have much worse QC than the righties. Agile offers more left handed than most, but there’s still a disparity in overall number. QC was phenomenal though.

I have really fat palms and short fingers, so flat and wide necks are trouble for me. Ibanez does play well and sound good though! Schecter has been my biggest disappointment so far, QC is below friggin Temu guitars on their lefties, the necks are narrow and thin and very flat, and holy shit are they piercingly bright.

Squat
45 x 10
150 x 5
185 x 5
220 x 3
255 x 3
290 x 3
330 x 10

All squat sets superset with 15 hanging leg raises

Assistance Superset
DB standing press - 45 lbs x 2 x 10; 30 lbs x 2 x 15
DB curls - 20 lbs x 2 x 10; 15 lbs x 3 x 10

Main squat sets felt great but really drained me so I backed off the intensity of the assistance work. My plan is to do an anchor cycle after this where I really push the + sets hard, so I’ll use this cycle to figure out the right intensity and volume to support that. Feeling good though

1/9/26 - Cardio Day

I did 20 minutes of bodyweight fuckery today. Started off planning to do a pull up/push up/squat circuit but it wasn’t jiving. So I switched to 20 skater jumps (lateral bounding from leg to leg), 20 standing oblique crunches, and 50 high knees for about 8 times through. Got bored of that and switched to 10 push ups, 10 squat jumps, and 20 alternating mountain climbers. Rested as needed, which ended up not being too too much. Workout was fun, lungs are burning, and you can see my heartbeat from the International Space Station and the Diego Garcia seismographs simultaneously.

That sounds ideal for what I’d be getting into- small jams with the old band and tinkering around at home. Did you find it recently? I’ve kind of poked around reverb . com and have found a few here and there but am curious about the state of them.

Used a small portion of the money to buy a Line 6 HX stomp. I have Monitors and a focusrite scarlet hooked up to my laptop for recording so I just use that for now. My band is doing a reunion this year in september and I’m planning on going direct to the PA for it with the HX stomp.

The other guitarist in the band has a righty schecter C-6 (I believe?) and I just can’t stand playing it. It’s the only guitar I’ve played that has the EMG 81/85 setup and it seems to lack any sort of mojo, on top of being actively more difficult to play than any other guitar I’ve ever used. Not sure if he got a dud or what, but that turned me off entirely from that company with that one guitar.

I found it a while ago but there’s good alternatives too. You’d be great with either the XXX 60 combo (the 40 is a totally different circuit), an Ultra 60 combo, or a Triumph PAG combo. All 3 are loud enough to hang with a band and allow you to use an external cab if you feel like it. They all sound similar because they’re an evolution of one circuit type, so it’s really whatever you happen to find. I see them on GC used for $300-$500 pretty often and occasionally they pop up on Marketplace cheaper.

I’ve got buddies that took this route and the only thing they don’t like is not having any stage volume. I have a Hotone Ampero Stage that sounds great and I got a cheap small power amp to run into a cab if I want stage volume or if I’m practicing without a PA. The Ampero doubles as my interface for recording too and I’ve been able to get some good amp tones with it - run my amp and pedalboard into a Two Notes Torpedo Captor, then into the Ampero for IR and high/low pass filters. From there I USB into my phone for BandLab to track my songs. I have a mostly-complete demo I’ll try to upload - it’s my Peavey Bravo through the Ampero setup. One of the best things you can do for your tone is to get good impulse responses. Seacow Cabs has been my go to because their packs only cost $5 and they have a huge variety of cabs and speakers available.

I felt really good for this whole session and have minimal idea as to why. Not thrilled with the bench set, weight felt real light until the final set. I may need to add some supplemental work to groove the bar a bit. Assistance was awesome, I made more of an effort to keep my neck from rounding over with all the movements and it shifted the load to the muscles I actually wanted to work.

@boilerman I’m gonna try and attach a video file of a demo I’m working on. Using the solo section for the first song I ever wrote to learn to build good tones

Good call! That thought didn’t even cross my mind. I haven’t played out in years but that is definitely something that I could see feeling off in the moment.

The track sounds great! Clean shredding as well!

Went skiing yesterday, and after 2 hours on the hills, my tibialis anterior were on fire. Today, I feel like I’m walking with cement boots on. I’m taking my brothers and nephews skiing at a much bigger place this weekend and am wondering if I’ll have any control at all :grimacing:

I tried really hard to talk myself out of lifting today but I’d rather have physical pain than the mental… issues that get loud when I don’t exert myself for too long. Shins didn’t hurt at all during the session and are still better after the session than before, so I feel like it was the right move. Definitely very tender on the tibialis anterior and I have a hard time with ankle dorsiflexion. Plan is to RICE tonight, Advil when I can, then hope for the best for Saturday.

KT Tape made skiing bearable on Saturday and I had a blast. But I didn’t eat or drink enough so Sunday was a tough one. Felt better today and the session went well. Still would love to see my press be stronger than it is. Backed off assistance a bit because my back and legs are still mad at me and I’m not 100% recovered from 9 hours of SENDING it.

1/26/26 - Cardio (AKA shoveling snow)

Shoveled a foot of snow, even deeper than that at the road, off my 30 x 20 driveway and 100’ of sidewalk in about a half hour. Started bundled up pretty good, ended up down to my snow bibs and a T-shirt because I was sweating so badly. Love the snow and it was a good excuse to get off my ass on an off day.
