Trying to at least. Press is definitely the most mental lift there is. Which explains why it hasn’t been my strong suit. Either way, thanks for being miles ahead of me so I have something to shoot for ![]()
Probably not “miles”. Pretty sure if I cut back down to my ideal weight, the press would come back with it.
I’d imagine our ideal weights are similar, but I’m damn near 100kg right now. Should be 92-ish at most…
Eh, speak for yourself fatty! My ideal weight is probably 75 kilo.
I think that makes the difference even worse ![]()
Only if you care about such things like strength as a % of BW. Which I totally do, but it is not for everyone. I am a little annoyed at my current percentages.
I’m about 50/50 on absolute strength vs % of bodyweight. And I’m not thrilled with either one. I did hit a 2.5 BWT deadlift and 1.5 BWT bench, though, so those were cool. But I’ve fattened out since then. I think I need to get down to 195-ish pounds and see how I look/feel/lift and then evaluate whether I need to drop more or not.
I prefer % vs BW as a measure in general, but in reality I vacillate between the two about 50/50. The older and fatter I get, the more I work towards absolute strength. Just because it is easier.

I think I’m built for it because that one is just “get under the bar and go” for me ![]()
Press and bench have gotten into my head lately.
Edit: It took me a bit to figure out who the hell Bagsy was, but then I read your log and saw the username thing. Glad you were able to get it done!
Squatting is so… technical. But I have a feeling I make it more technical than it should be.
Haha, sorry for that. I was thinking about it for awhile and am glad I did.
Once you find your form it won’t be so technical. But finding the form that makes you efficient isn’t easy. Mine goes against a lot of what everyone recommends because it’s so narrow.
I think you and I have talked about our weird squatting styles; low(ish) bar, narrow stance. Unless your style has changed.
Nope. It’s what feels right, makes my balls grow, lets me push the hardest, and keeps me from hurting. I widened out a touch (maybe 0.5-1") and it felt alien so I’ll be going back to probably a hip-width stance.
Edit: That narrow of a stance only works with a wicked low bar position. I actually have to warm my shoulders up to squat so that I can get the bar where it needs to be.
Not that I have anything figured out by a long shot, but my stance has always felt best narrow regardless of bar position. Wide is just a no-go for me. But of course, everyone is different.
As soon as I go much wider than hip width, my back totally takes over the lift. Cool because my low back is strong, but not cool because my lumbar destabilizes every time a mouse passes gas in Pakistan.
Never heard or read that one before…
I tend to come up with these on-the-spot because I hate using tired, cliche’d sayings.
They really grind my gears too.
