Furo's Kettlebell Log

I just did some quick experimenting with the pistol squat and I think I may have found the ultimate variation for my needs. I did it standing on the box I have been using to squat to, with the femur of the trailing leg hanging vertically and the knee flexed. I don’t think I explained that well at all, I’ll see if I can get a photo or a video on my next leg day.

Anyway, the fact that the non-working leg isn’t flexed at the hip I think will mean that my lumbar spine won’t have to flex so much, so hopefully this variation won’t hurt my lower back. When I’m feeling better I will try it for high reps and see how my back copes.

The only real difference I noticed with the few reps I did is that I can’t quite hit the same depth, but I still get well below parallel so I’m happy with that.

Week 15
Day 1:
Pistol/Leg Day

Reverse Lunge
40kg: 10-10

Double Swing
2x20kg: 6-6-6-6

Pistol Squat (Box)
BW: 6-6-6-6

Single Leg Hip Thrust
BW: Skipped - I’ve decided this exercise is pointless

Bodyweight: 96.0kg

I didn’t feel up to doing this on-the-minute. Otherwise, it was good (but brief).

Routine/Equipment Overhaul

I’m trying to perfect this routine, and the main thing I think it lacks is “heavy” weight. My goals involve being powerful, and that isn’t happening with 20kg and 28kg weights. So for this reason I’m thinking of investing in a 40kg kettlebell for rows, chest press (I’ll need a bench), get-ups and swings. To make space/money for this I’m thinking of selling my weight vest - I don’t like how it restricts my breathing and it often comes off mid-set. Having said that, the vest is very useful for building up weighted chins in small increments. I’m not certain on any of this, would be interested to hear people’s thoughts.

Prisoners

Just thought I’d throw this up here - I saw the movie “Prisoners” last night and highly, highly recommend it. Definitely check it out!

I watched it last night too lol.

Was good, makes you question your morality a lot when you feel certain things due to character actions.

I also saw Insidious 2 on Wed, first one was total shit but I actually liked this one. Had a mystery yarn to it not unlike Prisoners which kept me in it along with the scares.

Ah awesome! Yeah it was so good. I totally get what you mean about questioning your morality. I really couldn’t make up my mind about the 2 father’s actions: I couldn’t decide if I thought Hugh Jackman’s character’s actions were totally justified or if he was taking it way too far. And same with the other dad, I couldn’t make up my mind on if he was taking the right approach. Just goes to show how much grey area there is in situations like that, and how nothing is black and white. I really liked Jake Gyllenhaal (sp?) in it - never been a fan before but he was a bad-ass in this.

That’s interesting, I might check Insidious 2 out. I didn’t really like the first one.

If you’ve never played it ( i don’t know if you have a ps3, or like games in general) you should give Last of Us a go. It has an extremely similar theme regarding moral choices.

Jake Gyllenhaaaalala was good in it, he’s starting to grow on me tbh. I liked him in End of Watch and in this even more.

I would definitely recommend Insidious 2, I laughed at the first one but this one actually creeped me out lol.

I’m not actually into games really, never had a ps3 or xbox, but I’ve seen the TV trailers for that and it looks awesome.

Haha, yeah that’s true he was good in End of Watch too. Both are much grittier roles than usual. Also, is it just me or did he look like he’d bulked up a bit? I couldn’t decide if it was just the clothes he was wearing but I thought he looked more physically intimidating (the tattoos helped lol).

I’ll definitely check out Insidious 2, thanks

He looked like he had a little bit of a belly tbh, god damn bulking making him fat.

He got pretty swole for prince of persia a while back, check out some pics!

Week 15
Day 2:
Push

Handstand Push-Up
BW: 5-5-5

Kettlebell Flat Press
28kg: 8-6-6

Bodyweight: 96.4kg

I had a long day today and I’m still not over my cold so I kept it brief. I’m very happy with this session - I’ve gone from one set of five dodgy handstand push-ups to three sets of five smooth reps. The kettlebell press reps were low, but that’s because it was so hard to balance on the stool. Although it was hard to tell I think I really like the exercise so I’m going to go ahead and buy a bench so I can do it properly. It will take me a while before I can build up the funds for a 40kg kettlebell though.

Week 15
Day 3:
Core

Turkish Get-Up (Initial)
28kg: 6-6-6
10kg: 20

Bodyweight: 96.4kg

Another distinctly weedy training session. I’ve decided to scrap the snatch day, as it overlaps a lot with other days. I’ve got triceps DOMS from yesterday, which I’m taking as a good sign.

Weight Bench

I’ve been looking into buying a flat weight bench, and the cheapest I’ve found is just under £40 (ebay).

I’m seriously considering making one from wood instead - it would be a fun little project and it wouldn’t have to handle too much weight (95kg bodyweight and 40kg one arm press). Has anyone got any experience with anything like this?

Maybe I should make a separate thread.

Week 15
Day 4:
Pull

Neutral Grip Pull-Up
BW: 8-8-8

Chin-Up
BW: 8-3 (cramp really set in)

Kettlebell Row
28kg: 10-10-10

Another short session, because I’m tired and I still feel ill. My midback really cramped up on my first set for some weird reason, or maybe I pulled a muscle, I don’t know. It was pretty painful and restricted my breathing a little. I’ll do some mobility stuff later and have a bath and hopefully that will sort it. I’ll take tomorrow as a rest day, then hopefully be back to full workouts on Friday.

If I was you I would just splurge and buy a decent weight bench. Think of it as an investment.

Sounds like you have been under the weather lately. Sometimes that is the best time to take an unplanned deload and chill for 3-4 days.

Day 5:
Rest

Bodyweight: 97.1kg (uh oh)

Thanks buddy, yeah I’ve taken today off. I think I’ll be back to 100% soon.

Thanks for the input about the bench. I’ve thought about the advice I got in the thread I made and decided to go ahead with building it, but I’m going to make it ridiculously sturdy and I’m going to make it very low (to make it more stable and easy to pack away). It should still work fine for my kettlebell presses, and it will be very cheap to make, so I figure I may as well give it a shot. If it doesn’t work I haven’t really lost anything, as it will be cheap.

Good. Should be a good project.

I mean, we build most of our houses in this country out of wood… and I’m pretty certain they weigh a bit more than a fully loaded barbell.

Good luck on the resting up and feeling better thing.

Thanks buddy :). I’ve been taking 2000mg vit C like you suggested and I think it has been helping.

Week 15
Day 6:
Lower

Reverse Lunge
40kg: 12-12

Double Swing
2x20kg: 6-6-6-6

Pistol Squat (Box)
BW: 3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3

Bodyweight: 96.1kg

All sets were done on-the-minute. The time off must have really helped because the most I’ve ever done on box pistol squats is 10 sets of 2 and today I managed 10 sets of 3, which is a nice improvement.

Is that with both the right and left leg, or just one of them? Congrats either way. Sounds like you’re feeling better too; hope that’s actually the case.

For each set I did 6 total reps, 3 on each leg. I alternate legs between each rep because I want to minimise the time under tension. This is because I want to build up to 20 reps but I don’t want to increase leg size (much). I know it sounds stupid to worry about getting “too” big with pistol squats but my legs grow disproportionately fast compared to any other body part.

Thank you very much

Any chance of getting a video your single leg squat?
Im pretty sure we have very similar dimensions and I just want to see what it looks like for a bigger guy to single leg squat.

How far down do you go? Does the other foot touch the floor at all?
