Furo's Kettlebell Log

I treated myself today and got the opinel no. 12. Here’s a picture beside my regular size opinel. It’s a beauty!

Sorry if this is an ignorant question, but what do you do with those opinels?

They are very useful for camping, hiking and hunting. For things like collecting firewood or cutting rope or making things from wood. I like to carve walking sticks using them.

Swing Day

One-Arm Swings
40kg: 5x10
These didn’t feel that great, I think my hip tightness messed them up a bit.

Dumbbell Rows
30kg: 4x12

Pull-Ups
BW: 5x5
This wasn’t great, I need to get back to doing 3x10!

Dumbbell Shrugs
30kg: 3x10

Neck Work
High volume low weight.

Bodyweight: 95.1kg
Good.

The swings this morning weren’t great, but got the job done. The back session with Rattlehead felt really good. Afterwards I did a tonne of foam rolling and now I feel quite a bit better. I’ll do another bit later on.

I think the pistols are responsible for screwing up my hips. Please give me abuse if I mention trying them again in the future lol.

I like where this is going.

I’m not sure where it’s going lol.

Swimming Day
Today my hips felt absolutely rotten. I decided to take a different approach to the tightness (inspired by LoRez and Pwnisher’s conversation on mobility) and try to improve it by moving rather than by direct mobility work, so I went for a swim. I did 250m breaststroke, 25m backcrawl (legs only), 250m breaststroke, 25m backcrawl (legs only). The breaststroke felt good on my hips and the back crawl felt good on my hamstrings. Afterwards I did some sauna and plunge pool, but now I don’t feel much different - will have to see how I feel in the morning.

In terms of Simple and Sinister I think I should try a new way of dividing up my sessions that is more akin to the original routine. I’ll do two sessions per week with one exercise done heavy and the other done for conditioning (where I try to beat my time). So 40kg get-ups and 28kg swings one day and vice versa the other. This will allow me to train both conditioning and strength, will stop my sessions going on too long and will give me twice weekly frequency which I’ve always found quite good. I’ll just fit upper body and cardio around that baseline routine.

Hahaha!

So when you say your hips feel rotten, what do you mean?

Do they feel sore? Stiff? Are you in pain? One side more than the other? Where on your hips do you feel this discomfort?

It’s just a feeling of tightness and discomfort deep within both hip joints, it’s hard to explain.

Yesterday evening I also did a bunch of goblet squats and they felt like they helped more than anything else had (the stretching, foam rolling or swimming). So I need to remember them as a tool.

Turkish Get-Up Day

Turkish Get-Ups
40kg: 5x1
These took a ridiculous length of time, I was just being lazy.

Goblet Squats
20kg: 3x10
I decided to do these instead of swings to further help my hips.

Tomorrow I start another 95 hour week. Last time I had one of these I didn’t manage to train at all, but I’m determined to do better this time. I think currently my swings are doing better than my get-ups, especially from a technique point of view, so perhaps this week will be a good opportunity to go light on get-ups and work technique. After this week I have a little time off - perhaps I could then try GTG with 40kg get-ups? The combination of light technique work and GTG could really help.

Continued

My plans for the afternoon got cancelled so I decided to do swings as well.

One-Arm Swings
40kg: 5x10

I’m really glad I got the opportunity to do this in the end, as without it I would have gone a long time without doing heavy swings. Having said that it was a huge effort to do them - I wasn’t motivated at all! My training today has been sluggish to say the least. I also did a bunch more goblet squats, and now my hips feel almost back to normal.

My pet rabbit died yesterday, absolutely devastated tbh. It was fine in the morning, and gone when we got home. Only 14 months old - I mentioned first getting him in this log. He was much more than just a rabbit. More like a dog.

I’m also ill. I haven’t trained.

Sorry about your loss, bro. Get better soon.

Get some chicken soup. Rest up and relax.

Sorry to hear about your rabbit. Its better to have love and lost, then not to have loved at all.

Thanks a lot for the kind words guys.

I’ve just finished my final shift of my 95 hour week. I didn’t train at all, and I think I gained fat, but I feel good and my cold is just about cleared up so I primed to hit training hard!

That’s good to hear… the feeling good, ready to train, getting health(ier).

Sorry to hear about your rabbit. I remember when you first mentioned wanting to wait train him.

Thanks a lot bud

Turkish Get-Up Day

Turkish Get-Ups
40kg: 5x1
5min rest intervals. The first set felt off but the following sets felt fine.

Clean-Press-Squat
20kg: 15.5 rounds in 10min
This felt really good, like I was achieving something without ending up a broken winded mess.

Bodyweight: 95.8kg
I thought it would be a lot worse than that.

The clean-press-squat was from an article on Pavel’s website - a way of doing more moderate intensity steady state cardio with kettlebells, instead of the usual high intensity stuff which I never feel motivated for. The basic premise is: 1 clean, press and squat with your left hand then same with your right hand and just keep repeating that for a period of time.

Overall this session felt great, I got some solid strength work in with the get-ups and then the clean-press-squat was a really nice finisher. I’m going to have some lunch then head off to the pool - I’ll probably just do 10 lengths and then lie about in the sauna lol. Tomorrow I’ll do heavy swings and some more clean-press-squat.

Thanks for posting that. Will have to give that a whirl or some variation of that. Did a similar thing altering the Deep Six workout but I like the idea of a set amount of time and like you said I won’t be laying on the ground wishing the rapture would occur!

I also can’t believe I spelled “weight train” as “wait train”…
