You should of sticked with Dohertys. You should not support corporate businesses.

Can I suggest Brunetti’s on Lygon St for your weekly cheat meal?

Lol sorry about that. It’s just too convenient, and actually very well equipped! And Anytime Jake runs one, so it can’t be that bad.

Haha thanks for the tip, I’ll check it out.

Simple and Sinister Day 23 (Yesterday)
Single Arm Swings (5x10): 24kg
Turkish Get-Ups (5x1): 24kg

Short and sweet!

Bench Press (5x5): 80kg - Horrific

BUT, dropping ALL pressing for a month caused my pressing to plummet. That last part is unsurprising, but the message has hit home and I won’t ever do that again. The first bit is very cool though.

I see the training is going well. Regarding the bench press, I wouldn’t be to worried about, it is a movement first, so just because you have become “weak” at it doesn’t mean that you are actually weak. Just practicing the movement for a few weeks will bring it back to normal.
As usual keep up the good work.

Stay Strong brother
csulli wrote:
What’s the deal with Turkish getups anyway?
It is a great “core”/whole body movement.
csulli wrote:
Like, where do you feel those helping?
Hip mobility/stability, scapular stability, shoulder (gleno-humeral) mobility, well this should already be decent prior to starting, knee stability to an extend I think, body awareness, core work, serratus work.
csulli wrote:
I’m genuinely curious, cuz a lot of people like them, but they’ve always kind of mystified me lol.
Hope that helps, again just my thoughts.
furo wrote:
Lol I don’t think I’m getting the full effect from training them yet - I have too many weak points along the chain. For all of the main movements I can handle the weight quite easily eg the overhead lunge is easy, the press at the start is easy, the actual sit-up bit is reasonably easy. I’m being let down by stabilising the weight and transferring between stages. I think once my balance/stabilisers have caught up and I’m actually pushing myself strength-wise I’ll have a better idea of what’s going on haha.

Right now I’m just doing them because Pavel told me to. lol.
Sorry, I’m not trying to step over your toes brother.

I always appreciate your input young n! Yeah that was my understanding of the TGU too, core, shoulder, hip and knee stabilisers and, when you go heavy, quads and deltoids. That’s the theory, but like I said I’m at such a beginner stage with the movement that I can’t really comment on personal experience.

The thing I really like about the movement is that you can’t be strong on it if you have a single weak link in the chain, which I think is very good. Keeps you honest. I think in a lot of movements you can get decently strong while having weak points by compensating, which you simply cannot do with the Turkish Get-Up.

Yeah I think you’re right about the bench press, I’m not panicking too much :).

Simple and Sinister Day 24
Single Arm Swings (5x10): 24kg
Turkish Get-Ups (5x1): 24kg
Overhead Press (5x5): 50kg
Wide-Grip Pull-Ups (5x5): BW

This was a funny session, after the TGUs I realised the cafe across the road was about to close so rushed out and ate a huge meal, then went back and finished off. Wasn’t feeling great by the end haha! I supersetted the OHP and pull-ups.

I’m still having an awesome time in Melbourne. I went on a roadtrip with some friends this weekend along the Great Ocean Road: we drove a 4L bright orange Ford Falcon, which was a laugh. I hope everyone is doing well!

Lol nothing wrong with it at all! It was great!

Simple and Sinister Day 25 (Yesterday)
Single Arm Swings (5x10): 24kg
Turkish Get-Ups (5x1): 24kg

The 24kg Get-Ups feel great, I haven’t had any of the wobbles I sometimes have with the 28kg back home. Hopefully when I go back I’ll be able to move straight up to 28kg.

Simple and Sinister Day 26
Single Arm Swings (5x10): 24kg
Turkish Get-Ups (5x1): 24kg
Back Extensions (3x20): BW
Neutral Grip Pull-Ups (3x5): BW
Bench Press: 80kg x5; 90kg x5; 100k x3

Bench press felt a lot better today, I think my previous issues were just due to technique and confidence.

Simple and Sinister Day 27 (Yesterday)
Single Arm Swings (5x10): 24kg
Turkish Get-Ups (5x1): 24kg

I’m just about to head to the gym, and I’ll do my usual Simple and Sinister as well as probably bench press and pull-ups, but I won’t be able to log it for a few days as I’ll head straight from the gym to the airport - I’m going to Tasmania for a long weekend.

Have fun, I’m jealous.

Thanks man! I had a great time

Simple and Sinister Day 28 (Friday)
Single Arm Swings (5x10): 24kg
Turkish Get-Ups (5x1): 24kg
Upper Body
Bench Press: 80kg x5; 90kg x5; 100kg x5 Yuss.
Chin-Ups (3x5): BW
KB Press/Row Superset: 24kg x?

Simple and Sinister Day 29
Single Arm Swings (5x10): 24kg
Turkish Get-Ups (10x1): 24kg

I’ve dropped the bench press again, as it progressed back to baseline so quickly. I think it’s more worthwhile to make the most of the 24kg kettlebell before I go back to my 28kg, so I’ve doubled my TGU volume from 5x1 to 10x1.

Simple and Sinister Day 30
Single Arm Swings (5x10): 24kg
Turkish Get-Ups (10x1): 24kg
Back Extensions (3x25): BW

And the fact that you can easily swing a 24kg bell.

Told you not to worry about it.

Here is a suggestion try an anterior core exercise/ stabilization drill, or even any core exerise; anti flexion, anti rotation instead of doubling up on the volume of the TGU. Just a suggestion.

Thanks young n.

I just did the 10x1 for those 2 sessions because that was my last chance with the 24kg, so I wanted to make the most of it. I’m back in the UK now, so back to using the 20kg and the 28kg for 5x1.

Back in the UK
I’m back in the UK now, having had a great time in Australia. I have 4 weeks left as a student, with not much work to do and not many friends around, so I’m going to be focusing on my training and nutrition (although not doing anything ambitious or exciting lol).

Goals

 1. Comfortably do all S&S sets with 28kg
 2. Implement the S&S time limits (5min for swings, 10min for TGUs)
 3. Get my bodyweight consistenly under 95kg

Plan

 1. Do S&S as written (no additional movements)
 2. Train every day
 3. Regular varied cardio
 4. Nutrition as before: clean, IF, lower calories as appropriate

To further answer your question…

I’m not against the idea, and sometime down the road, maybe. But for right now and in the forseeable future, no.

From what I understand, proper usage requires a fair amount of monitoring and managing things, neither of which I’m particularly good at. It’s one more thing to juggle in my life, and I’m not really that interested in juggling anything more right now.

E.g., I can go for periods of time without taking fish oil or vitamin d, or eating and sleeping regularly, and my body can handle it just fine. Most anabolic compounds don’t seem to provide anything remotely similar to that level of flexibility.

And there’s the logistics and legality issue. I can run to a corner store and get alcohol or nicotine. If I could do the same and get compound X, without having to do anything special or be deceptive in any way, it might be a different story. For that matter, I’m moving to Washington later this year, where marijuana can be legally purchased and used just like that; at that point, I’m willing to reevaluate it (besides the one time I tried in college).

From a competitive standpoint, I’m not really competing with anyone but myself. So that’s not really a factor.

And then just from a general life standpoint, lifting has taken up a major role right now, while my girlfriend is long-distance and I’m saving cash to move out there. And while I have a certain aesthetic ideal as a goal, and certain strength goals, there are many many things that are more important than reaching those.

But as I said in the other thread, I’m all for the idea of people pushing limits, even at great costs. I think people should fundamentally have the right to try to improve themselves as much as they want.
