Good shit Dave. Question: in the vid you sent over @ Elite, you said that the 140 squat was ~97…are you sure? Serious question; that motherfucker looked like warmup weight! Ha, ha…
What’s it like training in wraps compared to no wraps? Does the weight tend to move faster?
Haha, yeah in the video it did seem pretty fast, but for comparison on Friday night I grinded out 145kg. I was also very fired up for that 140kg in the video.
Wraps are cool. They are annoying to get on properly, but when you try to bend your knee, your leg just wants to spring back straight haha.
They let you bounce out of the hole much better and you can get 10-15kg out of them (25-30lbs). The weight does move faster, but you tend to stall 5 or 6 inches above parallel, where they don’t help as much. Still awesome lol.
And Kirschen’s reply was brilliant. “David, you disappoint me. I was expecting a good laugh but these were actually pretty good”. lol
He liked my deadlift, that’s gotta be a good sign.
Awesome lifting!!! Thought I would stop by to say “Herrrrrrrrro!”
Haha thanks BWG! I do try…
Commercial Gym Time!!
Sunday 29th May
Close grip 2-board press
w/u
70kg x5 - off 1 board
75kg x5
80kg x5
85kg x5
90kg x5 - PR
Shrugs
3x20, 90kg
GHRs
3x12
Pulldown abs
some x some, just trying them out. Pretty good.
And now for why I don’t like commercial gyms. After I’d finished pressing, some stilt-syndrome guy came up to be and said I’m going to hurt myself. I stayed silent while he explained he’s always been told not to go lower than 90 degrees otherwise “you activate your shoulder”. At this point I explained that I am a powerlifter. He looked blank so I continued, the rules of powerlifting say that you have to touch your chest.
He then asked why I arch so much and that I would hurt my spine. He said he’s never seen anyone do that before. I then had to explain that it reduces the range of motion and I even demonstrated it on the bench before he buggered off.
Never again.
Monday 30th May
Squats x 0 - glute started feeling like it was about to strain again, so I gave squatting a miss tonight.
Weighted chin ups
5x5, +15kg. Much weaker than I thought I was on these…
Weighted situps
3x10, +10kg. Only exercise that went mildly acceptably.
Deadlifts
60kg x8
80kg x5
100kg x3
120kg x3
140kg x0 - didn’t even fucking budge
130kg x3 - got angry
Felt like I was going to pass out the whole workout. Seriously shit session. I’m getting burnt out but I’ve only got about 2 weeks left of training before I deload for the meet, so I’ve got to push myself.
Wed 1st June
(relatively) lighter day as I’m burnt out and ill. Got to keep going though; just over 2 weeks out from the meet.
Box squats - log + 18 carpet tiles + foam - puts me about an inch above parallel. Really focused on sitting back and lightening the weight after reading Dave Kirschen’s comments re my box squat.
70kg 7 or 8 x 5
80kg x5
90kg x5
Shrugs / High pulls
some x some
Plank x 2 minutes (upon reading today’s Tnation article lol). Apparently my ab training is right. Yay.
Training partner noticed today that when I squat, the bar is sloped down to the left, and we spent a lot of sets trying to figure out what was up. Stretched shoulders etc but didn’t seem to loosen it. It’s not too bad though so I’m not losing sleep over it.
Friday 3rd June - 16 days out
Notes: ill & burnt out - have a cold
Put ridiculously strong liniment on glute - fuck me this is strong shit. Some muay thai stuff. Not quite equiblock level, but gotta be close.
Squatz - knee wraps
w/u
80kg x5
100kg x3
120kg x1
140kg x1
150kg x1 - PR!! Wasn’t too bad - will probably be my 2nd attempt in the meet. Got my wraps really tight and just went after it. 2xBW squat is not far off…
Bench - wrist wraps & comp pause
w/u
60kg x5
70kg x5
80kg x3
85kg x3 - felt really weak today (probably because I did lots of pushups yesterday) and left it here.
Deadlift
w/u
100kg x3
120kg x1
140kg x1
160kg x1 - matched gym PR - Ridiculously slow off the floor but rocket boosters once at the knees. Considering I’m ill, pretty happy about this.
Front squats
some x some - light
Next training cycle will have deficit pulling in it. I’m too weak off the floor for my liking.
Pretty decent day for coughing, sneezing and sniffling the whole time, whilst my glute irritated me haha.
Got complimented on my good squat form and my ability to stay very upright and rigid in the hole, instead of folding up. All good signs.
Nice squat. Deficit sumo pulling seems very weird for me.
Yeah, it will be odd. Since I don’t want to stand on two blocks in case they slide & tear my groin (ouch), and I don’t have enough small plates, I’ve made one long block so I can pull sumo off it. Ingenious, I know
Sunday 5th June
2 weeks out
Box squats - 12 carpet tiles & foam
w/u
80kg 8x3 - focus on speed and form
1-board press - competition grip

JM DB press
20kg 3x10
GHRs

Not the greatest session today, not much sleep last night and I’ve eaten next to no food today.
Thursday 9th June
10 days out
1-arm cable row
w/u
35kg x20
Face pull
20kg 4x10
Hammer curlz
16kg some x some
Ab wheel - standing, only negatives
lots
Tyre flips
lots x lots
First time I’ve flipped the tyre, it’s great fun. And don’t worry, I’m not doing the ‘ugly deadlift’, although I noticed the entire cricket team was. Poor coaching.
Saturday 11th June
8 days out
Squatz
w/u
80kg x3
100kg x1
wraps on
120kg x1 - loose wraps
130kg x3 - PR - fairly loose wraps. Only meant to do a single but I thought ‘fuck it’

w/u
60kg x3
70kg x1
80kg x1
90kg x1
95kg x1
Meet coming around again I see. What are your target lifts this time?
Well, I want to hit a 155kg squat, 100kg bench and 180kg deadlift.
I’m already planning my next training cycle - I have something like 23 weeks until my next meet in November. I’m probably going to do a Sheiko routine. Because I can. lol
And dude, when are you doing a meet! I COMMAND you to do one haha
Monday 13th June
6 days out - last session
Squats - knee wraps & meet commands

170kg x0 - didn’t go anywhere. No worries, will be my second attempt at the meet.

Good luck on those numbers. You should be able to get all of them. And Sheiko seems pretty intense; I’ll be looking forward to that.
Dude I was going to do one on May 28 but my stupid back got fucked and I had to let it slip. I regret not going.
Cheers dude.
Wed 15th June
Stretching & foam rolling
Thursday 16th June
3 days out
stretching & foam rolling
A few tyre flips
Sunday 19th June
MEET!!
Warmed up for squats
130kg - 3 whites
142.5kg - 3 whites
155kg - lost it in the hole, almost passed out
Slightly strained my back…
Bench
82.5kg - 3 whites - dropped opener from 90kg cos I was tired from the squat, and the judge was doing LONG-ASS PAUSES
90kg - 3 whites, easy
100kg - 3 whites, thought ‘fuck it’ and went for the ton, and I got it!!! YAY PR
Deadlift
150kg - 3 whites
160kg - 3 whites, slow off floor
172.5kg - glued to floor.
Total - 402.5kg - 10kg pr
Didn’t do as well as I had hoped - (lame deadlift) but that was because I had slightly strained my back and knew 180kg wouldn’t go up today. But the bench PR definitely makes up for it all!
I might be able to find a few videos of my attempts, bear with me while I try to get hold of them.
The suspense was just killing me.
Good job at the meet dude.
