Forum Pet Peeves

Well, you have to consider the entirety of the post, and of the poster. For example, someone to whom English is a second language gets more breaks (from me at least) than someone who was born, raised, and edumacated tight here in the good old U.S. of A (or any other country to which English is a primary language). It’s hard to tell when someone is a newbie whether they are just being lazy or are in fact struggling with a language because it is new to them. When in doubt, I just ask them if English is their primary language.

However, there is a big difference between the aforementioned situation and someone who posts like this:

??my name is tony and i have a quesstion?hoow much calories should I eet if I want to ad 25 pounds of musle?i?m almost years old, been traneing 4 two years and need to lok good for the beech this summer?anyone help me please?also wat steroids should I take?.SEAHAWKS RUUUUUULE!?

Pretend Tony was raised speaking English. Notice a few things about the above example:

1. Tony is lazy. He hasn't bothered to use any punctuation, capitalization, and he hasn't double-checked his spelling. Perhaps this laziness is also reflected in the fact that he obviously has not utilized the search engine, nor read enough back issues to at least try to find the answer himself.

2. Tony is almost 20 years old. That means, if he is an American or Brit, that he should at least be able to write his native language clearly, which he cannot.

3. When told to repost an intelligible question, Tony will become indignant and post something about how he didn't know he was in English class, and that anyone who offers criticism needs to get a life.

4. Tony, despite all evidence to the contrary, thinks that Seattle has a great football team.

See what I'm getting at? Sometimes you need to dig a little deeper than the surface, but it is possible to figure out why Tony's question sucks.

Regarding writing properly, all I have to say is this: it doesn't take any more time to do it right, and you'll get more responses if you do.

Joel, it’s time to ease on down. Pull on back. Take it on home. Strange post. I can, however, appreciate the time it took to come up with those rhymes. It must have taken you about 10-15 seconds.
Jay, when you post, please add something constructive. Here is an example.
I think that proper grammar is essential. You will not be taken seriously if you do not write clearly. I echo what CharDawg has been saying. Jay, that is taking a stand and offering something to the forum.
