I grew up in Marguerite. Very near Latrobe. I love that you can pick out a patch by the houses. They all look the same. ![]()
Perogies got moved to tomorrow. I spent the day doing snacks food for my kids for the week. Granola, protein bars and banana no bakes. The no bakes aren’t particularly healthy (lots of sugar) but they are yummy and the boys like them.
Oh, and protein muffins.
You don’t have to tell anybody where the bathroom is.
. There are like 200 houses, virtually identical. The only ones that are different are the ones built by the big Italian family.
I’ll have to see how the week goes. I have a couple more small sheeps heads but my wife called dibs on one for pizza.
My grandpa worked in the mine and my dad got super salty about the foreman. Lol. And the company store. “Cause I owe my soul to the company store”.
Mine too! My dad used to tell me about going to the company store and signing the ledger for the food you bought.
Did he tell you about the Christmas ham that they “gave” you for Christmas and then charged to your account?
I think that was a Frick thing. He worked for Pittsburgh Coal Company. I don’t think they got a ham.
. I never heard anybody mention one.
.
Hence the term “What the Frick???”. ![]()
8 cups of flour?
You’ll be making perogies till the cows come home ![]()
Thats enough to feed everybody!
Those will feed you through the winter!!
I was too captivated to hit the “like” button, but I loved the entire pirogies conversation. @ChickenLittle hahaha about the flour!
I think I’ll bookmark the recipe for…for…some sort of occasion.
Maybe I’ll make them for Christmas, when everybody is here, since that’s how many it feeds. ![]()
I think that may have been the “wedding” recipe size.
@SkyzykS incidental question: did you do cookie tables at weddings? The perogies made me think of my mom making dozens and dozens of cookies for all of the weddings we went to. That was everyone’s favorite part of the wedding I think. That and the polka bridal dance. My husband’s family wasn’t quite sure what to think of that one. Lol
Oh yeah. Its not a reception without one.
My dad played the accordion.
Gotta “Roll out the barrel”!!! Or as you may recall “do the alpine polka!!!” .
I can see now why my bougie son likes Pittsburgh so much!
If he made it through his first fish fry season he’s good to go.
.
If pittsburgh was better located (better weather, more convenient for flights to Asia), I would 100% move back.
@anna_5588 @SkyzykS @EmilyQ I have been to all different kinds of weddings. I have never found one that had a better tradition than a southwestern PA bridal dance. The nonstop polka, the shots after you dance with the bride, the grooms fight through the crowd to carry his bride away. Nothing better. ![]()

Its part of the regions charm. People think of Seattle or London when they think of bad weather. Ours is much worse, which makes it way better.
…
They built steel mills so there was somewhere to cool off in the summer.
I thought I’d share an interesting recipie my Olympic client likes. It’s like a marshmallow fluff that he puts in his coffee.
2 cups water
6 scoops collagen
1 cup maple syrup
Bloom the gelatin in the water for 5 minutes, then heat to dissolve. Off heat, add the maple syrup and cool to room temp. Use the whisk attachment on a stand mixer to beat to soft peaks. Pour in a baking dish and chill. Cut into cubes and toss with powdered maple sugar.
It kind of tastes like eating a balloon on its own, but I can see it being good in coffee.
