Flab to Fab: 2025 the saga continues

Good luck to your mom. Mine is approaching 70 and I have been trying to get her out of her house, which is way too big for what she needs and has a ton of stairs, into a stepless ranch for a year for this exact reason.

Thanks for the kind words. My mother is around the same age but was already dealing with a few other health issues. She is headstrong but it does seem like she is realizing she needs to move somewhere that she will be safe given her age and limited mobility.

Kettlebell swings (55) 10-15-25-50 reps
Overhead press (135) 1-2-3 reps

5 total sets

Slow going today. Did a lot of heavy yard work/moving over the weekend along with swings so probably not 100% recovered

Kettlebell swings (55) 10-15-25-50 reps x5 sets
Goblet squats (70) 2-3-5 repsx5 sets

Didn’t time, just getting the work in

Really struggling with motivation lately, fell off diet, sleep hasn’t been great

Will finish last week of 10,000 swings and reassess

Do want to repeat the challenge at a later date when I can focus on it better - breaking it up and not optimizing sleep/diet definitely compromised results I could have gotten

Fell behind on this. Last night my wife handed me a separation agreement she had had an attorney friend put together, dividing assets.

I knew we were headed toward separation but the wording made it clear the intent was to dissolve the marriage and not a trial period to “feel things out”

We had been in counseling for several months and things seemed to be getting better until over the summer we got into an argument after one session where she thought I wasn’t taking the counseling seriously enough

I suggested, and she initially agreed, to continue counseling during the separation, but she also indicated she no longer had any interest in doing that

It seems like she has no interest on continuing to try to work things out at this point.

I thought the division of assets sounded fair enough, but actually getting the document…

Will try to finish the challenge over the next week. Will probably take next week off then slowly work back up.

Sorry to hear that man. FWIW, my ex-wife leaving me was the best thing that ever happened to me.

Thanks for the kind words, even though it’s devastating right now perhaps in the long run it is for the best.

She’ll find out how much of a mistake she’s made.

But too late, sadly.

Thanks for the kind words

I still do love my wife and probably always will, even if no longer romantically.

There is blame to go around but it’s probably late for that. There are things in hindsight we both could have done better especially communicating when we were unhappy about something. Many times we just stayed quiet until we lost patience and made a mountain out of a molehill.

I’ll probably make a longer post later on when I’ve had more time to think about things.

We have had years like that. Sometimes it seemed like it would never end. Between med bills, more med bills, missed diagnoses, cancer diagnoses, etc. It all finally petered out. Keep swinging.

Started training again. Took up Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as there is a school about 5 minutes from me. I’d trained there about 6-7 years ago. A few familiar faces but a lot of the white belts and blue belts I remember are now purple or brown belts. Partly for the fun of competition (within class that is, I don’t really plan on doing a tournament anytime soon) and for the socialization as becoming isolated after separation/divorce is a risk.

Trying to go to 2 classes a week for now and lift twice a week. Following the “slow carb diet” which I know is gimmicky but I’m not trying to get to 5% bodyfat or anything like that so I think I can stick with this and make some progress. I’m really sore after each session but I think a lot of this is having rusty technique, so-so mobility and trying to muscle my way out of awkward positions.

Doing a “deload” week this week on weights, was thinking of the following for the next 6 weeks after then re-evaluating:

Monday: off
Tuesday: BJJ
Wednesday: off
Thursday: upper body
Friday: off
Saturday: BJJ
Sunday: Lower Body

Lifting split would look like
Week 1:
Bench 5s pro then 5x10 press, pulldowns, neck work
Squat 5s pro then 5x10 deadlift, core work, neck work

Week 2
Overhead press- 5s pro then bench 5x10 and dumbbell rows, neck work
Deadlift (trap bar) 5s pro then 5x10 squat, core work, neck work

That way I have 2 full days after doing squats/deadlifts before BJJ class and a week before doing squat/deadlift again. Do a lot of calisthenics like air squats, push ups, bear crawls and core work in BJJ class so I think lower frequency might be OK

Kind of fell off updating this but have still been training.

Weight: 225.6 - dat hearbreak diet lol

Trap bar deadlift- 260x3 300x3 335x10
Squat - 145x10x5 sets
Ab wheel- 3x10 reps
Neck harness-2x30 reps

Been doing at least 2 BJJ classes a week, 3 depending on time and energy. Set up has been like this:

Monday: off
Tuesday: BJJ
Wednesday: upper body
Thursday: BJJ - usually will take off if too sore or busy
Friday- off
Saturday- BJJ
Sunday - lower body

Been following the 5/3/1 variation outlined above but doing a PR set on one lift then 5x10 on the other. Will try to “milk” this as far as I can. Starting with like 50% training max for the 5x10 work but will try to add like 5-10 pounds each cycle.

Right now it’s easy so try to keep rest periods short and go for the PUMP - not sure if it’s really optimal but feels OK so far from a recovery standpoint

Great weekend went to Night Ranger concert Sunday and stopped at the York Barbell Hall of Fame on the way home

11/25
BJJ class

11/26
Bench 165x5 185x3 205x5
Overhead press 75x10x5 sets
Pulldown 115x10x6 sets (2 sets overhand 2 sets underhand 2 sets neutral grip)
Dumbbell Curls- 3x10
Push downs 3x10
Neck 2x30

Pressing strength down I think a combination of sudden weight loss and shoulders getting accustomed to different stress of grappling

The pride of Sacramento I believe. Glad you had a good time. The museum looked great. I was wrong, San Francisco.
