Well… There are GPA hurdles for employment with certain companies. I’m an accounting major, and there is a 3.8 GPA hurdle if you even want to be considered for one of the big 4 accounting firms, and of course, I totally forgot which one. I know for Deloitte and Touche the GPA hurdle is a 3.0. I can only speak up for that though, I don’t know about other majors.
I agree though that a GPA doesn’t mean shit outside of college, when you get out there and start working.

Who gives a flying fuck about grades? I can tell 100% about a person’s character if they tell me about their college GPA. I’m getting my CSCS - and if I don’t feel like putting an effort forward in my “Life in Russia” class today, I won’t. Oh noes, maybe I’ll get a C. I bet I’ll never recover from that!
There’s a world of difference between a C and a D, though. I can’t imagine any science-based major, or any major worth a damn, accepting a D in a science class.[/quote]
Seriously.
At my university, all core classes must be passed with at least a C-. Anything lower is failing; you get no credits & must retake the course. My major requires a 2.0 overall GPA, and a 2.0 GPA in your major classes. A C- is a 1.7. I imagine this is pretty common.
You’ll also probably never get into a graduate program with a < 3.0 GPA. They’ll laugh at you. I’ll laugh at you, too. It’s not hard to get A’s. It’s easy to get a B. You gotta really fuck off to get a C. If you fail, it’s because you attended 15% of the classes and did not study at all.
