Fighting Parking Tickets or Ordinance Citation

[quote]Dustinsk wrote:

Sounds like the real deal to me. I wouldn’t not pay it. Set a court date and see what happens.

Just make sure you dress nice and be respectful to the judge. Don’t argue your innocence, throw some line out there about throwing yourself on the mercy of the court.

Yeah that’s what I’m thinking. I figure it’s such a petty offense the officer won’t show up. Well I’m hoping

[quote]super saiyan wrote:

…which happens a surprising amount.

I used a traffic ticket service to fight two speeding tickets I got - neither cop showed up.

Another example, which actually makes me pissed at the officer - family friends of ours have a 16 year old little shithead of a kid, who decided to go 120 km/hr directly in front of a public school around dismissal time (40 km/hr limit). Cop caught him with radar, was looking at a stunt driving charge, which carries a $10,000 fine and I believe a 2 year suspension. On court day, the cop did now show up! Case dismissed.

(Didn’t really matter though - the kid’s dad isn’t going to let him even look at a car for the foreseeable future)

Yeah I mean I really hate to waste time with this but the court house is less than 3 miles from my house. But it’s still a hassle because you have to show up at 8 and I have class everyday

Man, I’m 100% with DB on this one. Pay the fine. You broke the rules. The rules existed before you got there. It’s your responsibility to know them, and it’s your responsibility to pay the fine associated with breaking them. There’s no way in hell I would take a day off from work for something like this when A) I was guilty in the first place, and B) Best case scenario, you save 150, worst case, you save nothing. The risk/reward sucks.

Also: No, you could not have flown to the parking lot magically when you realized you were late. You COULD have gotten there at 3 instead and had plenty of time, instead of cutting it so close. This is T-Nation. Be a man.

In summary: Don’t waste your time, or the court’s time.

The citation is a set amount. In the park after hours = $190. 1 hour, 2 hours, 15 minutes… Doesn’t matter. The ticketing person doesn’t have the ability to write a lesser ticket im almost positive. This is true if its the same as a parking enforcement agent in the city

So he has to either issue the standard citation ($190) or not issue one at all. The guy was technically breaking the rules that he already knew about.

I don’t disagree with you but where do you draw the line for what’s “being a dick” and what’s ok? 20 minutes? 30 minutes? 35 minutes? Ya know?

Letting someone off for 15 minutes late and citing someone for being 25 minutes late would be fair. Talk about “taking the law into your own hands.”

Vacation days, man.

Sounds like an awesome vacation lol

and this.

It sucks and you can try to fight it but ultimately the responsibility is on you. You didn’t allow enough time, didn’t check when the park closes, and didn’t show up on time which probably meant that the attendant had to wait for you. You may think “big deal it’s 15 minutes” but this probably happens with some frequency and so he has no tolerance for it.

Ultimately it’s your responsibility but good luck if you choose to fight it.

P.S. It’s easy for me to say this because it’s not my $200.

I agree I broke the rules. Never said I didn’t. I just think it was overkill. The parking ticket was enough especially after I paid to park. He cited me 2 minutes after closing and then 11 minutes later I walk down and cites me 150. Is that my fault sure but in no way did he have to do it… I’m just going to try to have it reduced and pay it. Ill just walk in the open space from now on instead of “his park.”

Well, since you’re a student without a job I suppose taking the time to fight the thing might be worth it for you. Unless you’re a dumbfuck, missing a couple classes won’t hurt your grades at all (provided that attendance isn’t a significant portion of the grade).

That being said, I really don’t know how you’ll be able to justify your actions. I suppose you could mention the leash incident and try to spin things so that it looks like the guy was harassing you or whatever, but you know what they say. Do the crime, do the time.

The exact same thing happened to me out here in California when I was sixteen on the same day that I got my driver’s license. My buddy and I drove up to Stevens Creek Reservoir and parked in a parking lot next to one of the hiking trails. I had a bong, bottled water, high-octane weed (is there any other kind in California?) and a backpack to carry everything in and we set out for a little hike and some bong rips.

Well, needless to say we don’t get back until about 45 minutes past sunset and a ranger is waiting by my car to issue me a ticket since the park closed 30 minutes after sunset. I got a ticket but in reality, I’m lucky that’s all I got since I was in possession of illegal drugs and about to drive my vehicle under the influence of a controlled substance.

So I paid the fine and was done with it. Lesson learned.

Fuck. That. Shit.

In situations like these where “the system” screws you, I fall back on the ten-fold rule. The ten-fold rule is not a rule that you learn in school, it’s something I kinda figured out on my own. It goes something like this:

If some stupid, chickenshit, ridiculous, arbitrary “rule” (whether public entity or private entity) costs me money, and it will cost me more time than is worth to fight it, I will pay the fine. I will then “extract” TEN TIMES the amount I payed out of said organization. I won’t steal it, I’ll just force them to pay it somehow, some way. Be that by vandalism, frivolous lawsuit, pulling a fire alarm, setting off a stink bomb in the store, or any number of creative ways that I estimate will cost about ten times what their bullshit, chickenshit “rule” (that I didn’t vote for and obviously wasn’t properly disclosed, or else I wouldn’t have violated it) cost me.

Now let me be clear: this isn’t for things like speeding tickets - I know the fucking speed limit and if I choose to break it I man up and pay. But $190 for overstaying 15 fucking minutes? That’s fucking chickenshit in ANYONE’S book. After I paid that fine, I’d be taking about two grand out of their ass. I especially like fucking the government. Let me know if you want help brainstorming a way to fuck them.

Yes, I know that some of the means of “retaliation” are against the law. Misdemeanors at most, though. I’m already a felon, so it’s not like a fucking misdemeanor is gonna fuck me up or anything! LOL But like most things, if you’re careful, you’ll get away with it. What’s BEST, and rare, but the ULTIMATE goal, is to fuck them LEGALLY and cost them as much as you can and have them KNOW it was you that fucked them. Then they get to think to themselves, “well I guess I shouldn’t have fucked with THAT guy”. That’s right, mutherfucker, you shouldn’t have.

Now some of you here will probably cry foul. You’ll say I’m immature, a criminal, a sociopath, think I’m better than everybody else, that my actions in some way drive up the price of goods and services or taxes, blah blah blah. Well that’s all probably true - I don’t give a fuck. That’s how I’ve rolled for about three decades now and it works for me. Let me tell you, the satisfaction is worth it. I sleep VERY well at night knowing that the person/organization that fucked me got fucked ten times more than I did. It helps keep my sanity. It’s karmically correct! It keeps my little brain from having too many homicidal thoughts. I tell you, without the ten-fold rule, I’d have snapped a long time ago and shot up a dentist office or something (not the patients, don’t worry LOL).

Your last paragraph summed up my thoughts nicely so I guess I won’t have to say it.

Now I know why it costs $190 to stay in a park fifteen minutes longer than allowed.

Your system works for you, eh? Is that why you’re a convicted felon?

The ten-fold rule is hardly “karmically correct”. Maybe if you exacted an equal value’s worth of revenge in response to an unjust law it would be. Your particular brand of justice doesn’t cost institutions like the park system or whatever any money at all and therefore your revenge is misguided at best. Whatever cost increase your actions result in are just transferred to the innocent taxpayer who has no part in your actions or the policies that provoked them.

Just because it makes you sleep better at night or keeps you from flipping out and going postal doesn’t make it “karmically correct” at all. If anything, you’ve seriously tilted the karmic scales out of your favor. If the entire world revolved around you and only you, maybe you would have a point. But it doesn’t, so you don’t.

The reality is that we have all these laws and fines and sets of asinine rules to protect ourselves from people like you who cannot cope with the realities of the world in which we live in a way that doesn’t transfer your warped brand of “justice” onto the innocent. The next time I (or anyone else, for that matter) pay an exorbitant fine for some ridiculously minor transgression maybe I should exact ten-fold revenge on you instead.

A case like this in Ohio would be held in something called environmental court I believe I’d imagine it would be something similar there. It deals with all types of stupid shit including dogs at large say(speaking from experience), if you have the time to go and you are respectful and say you were guilty often a court like that will reduce your fine. However you have to go in with the idea of pleading guilty and asking for a lesser fine. If you make more work on something stupid generally your fine can go up.

Forget the haters, you may be immature and a sociopath but you are also a fucking GENIUS!

There are far too many arbitrary, obsolete and overly-harsh rules being applied in a manner that belies common sense today. Just because some asshole in a uniform or a bureaucratic pen-pusher has a bad day because he caught his wife sucking some other guy’s dick, those rules are often applied to-the-letter-of-the-law instead of in its spirit, screwing innocent people who at most are guilty of a minor misdemeanor.
