FBI Wants Records Kept of Web Sites Visited

WASHINGTON–The FBI is pressing Internet service providers to record which Web sites customers visit and retain those logs for two years, a requirement that law enforcement believes could help it in investigations of child pornography and other serious crimes.

FBI Director Robert Mueller supports storing Internet users’ “origin and destination information,” a bureau attorney said at a federal task force meeting on Thursday.

As far back as a 2006 speech, Mueller had called for data retention on the part of Internet providers, and emphasized the point two years later when explicitly asking Congress to enact a law making it mandatory. But it had not been clear before that the FBI was asking companies to begin to keep logs of what Web sites are visited, which few if any currently do.

Keep your eyes on this one…

I think they have good intentions but knowing that FBI is pretty much the government, it is pretty much BS that the FBI should think they have the right to have this kind of control over the private sector. And I believe it will cause the FBI to focus on other meaningless “internet crimes”, stuff like torrents, etc etc.

Just another step on the road to orwell. It wont be long before CCTV is installed in every major city for our “safety”. Ask how well it works in London.

this nanny state needs to learn from George Carlin and “Take a fuckin chance”

There is no place for this in a free society. What an awful thing.

Great, your government pays millions to basically build a masturbation chronology.
on the bright side, this could lead to a major breakthough in understanding sexual behaviour.

…oh, it’s not just in the USA they want to implement this, in Holland and in the end the whole of Europe will fall victim to this horror. When the time comes we all have to find a VPN, like this one: WiTopia: Fast & Easy VPN and Encrypted Email Services

Yikes, thanks for the link. Very troubling.

The government which governs best governs least.

There’s probably some twisted pervs in the government that want to find kiddy porn so they can “keep it for evidence”.

The same pervs that get to electronically feel up women as they walk thru body scanning devices at the airport.

It doesn’t stop here folks…you can bet that they will soon be implanting “criminals” with GPS devices.

I was going to mention that the next logical step to tracking electronic destinations, is to start tracking physical ones.

"Whoever lays his hand on me to govern me is a usurper and tyrant, and I declare him my enemy.

?Proudhon, 1849"

While not a huge fan of everything he wrote, I gotta agree with Proudhon here…and it seems somewhat relevant.

privacy is for creepers.

glad to see both the representatives of left and right are equally appalled here. This is a ridiculous assertion.

Also, big points to Rich for the Carlin reference. I really do think he said it best. Take a fuckin’ chance once in a while.

The real creeps are the people who paid to spy on people.
