I’m actually quite skilled with drilling tbh. Former aviation structures mechanic… standard drilling tolerance is -0.000/+0.003 for unsupported drilling.

Step drilling every 0.030" and using a reamer has made it so exit hole snagging doesn’t really exist, even when drilling titanium (really you could get away with .125 step up with little issue). Small burrs are still expected but honestly l haven’t had a drill snag on me in years.

If doing some garage work though, yeah the backer is required. If had a few pieces grab onto the drill press and fling it across the room before.

I’m going to feel like a douche here, but the ribbon you cut is actually telling your your feed rate is too fast. Ideally you’re looking for a pile of small chips. (I still go for ribbons too unless at final size, but you don’t want it to be a thick ribbon).

You know more than me in most of these areas TBH, but drilling was like a specialty of mine lol.

No, thats a very accurate analysis. I do get agressive with the drilling, especially when there’s a bunch and I’m all caffeinated.

Yeah, thats pretty much perfect. I interviewed once at Parker Hannefin electromechanical division at the recommendation of a friend who already worked there. I was so freakin out of my league it actually was pretty funny :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:.

I can’t hang with that level of precision.

But for plug welds on tool box door repairs,

Good enough is good enough. :+1: (they got ground flush)

The portaband. I hate sawzalls with every fiber of my being, but I love these suckers. Cut quality can vary widely, but it absolutely will cut!
