Favorite Board Games?

To avoid getting glued to the TV, Dani and I started played board games a few nights a week.

Have any recommendations?

Two of our recent go-to games:

We’re boring, but my wife and I sometimes like to play Scrabble in the evenings. It’s also fun to make the reward for the winner something a little more…interesting.

Oh man, how far down the nerdy rabbit hole that is board games do you want to go?

Some personal faves for small numbers of players:
Ticket to Ride (up to 5 players)
Onitama (2 player only)
Abalone (2 player only)
Quarto (2 player only)
Settler of Catan (though admittedly better with 4 players)
Century Spice Road
Villainous
Go (though this one is hard to learn, I am still figuring it out)
High Risk (good little travel game)
King of 12

Good Party Games;
Trial By Trolley (absolutely hilarious and way better than Cards against Humanity [that game sucks])
Tapple
Word on the Street
Logo Game
Codenames

Classics I enjoy:
Cribbage
Risk

A card game I like along the lines of Magic, but easier and less expensive:
Keyforge

Jenga is fun with two people.

And of course backgammon.

Googling several of those, thanks! We have Abalone. Dani isn’t a fan. BTW, you can buy an extra set of red marbles and make it a three-person game, but someone always gets teamed up on.

Dani loves games but I’ve never liked classic card games. I blame it on being an only child. But the right board games, I’ve discovered, can pull me in. They’re great for staying sharp and hanging out with your spouse without overdoing TV. We’ve even been attending a church small-group based around board games… and ping pong. Might need to get a table.

We’ve always played chess here and there, but after a long day at work I prefer slightly more casual games.

Settlers of Catan is probably mine. And a friend of mine introduced me to one called “Betrayal at House on the Hill” sometime last year, which is also up there.

We played a lot of board games growing up (it was the 70s and probably mandatory …). But my favorite for just pure fun (in a family with parents and kids able to play together) was this one.

Add Uno, Chinese Checkers, and Axis and Allies and this is my list.

Cones of Dunshire rocks.

I did not know this existed! Must now own it!

My personal favourite: Race for the Galaxy - quite symbol heavy, steepish learning curve, worth it in my opinion

Other great additions:

  • Havana - nice because it really reduces the luck element which features in a lot of board games
  • Love letter - great quick little card game, very travel friendly
  • Carcassonne - quite a relaxed game
  • Lost cities - 2 player only, fast card based game

Loads of less “serious” games we play with the kids - all lighter easier fun stuff, although my son’s just started playing chess and legit beat me for the first time the other day, proud moment.

Chess has already been mentioned, but it’s a really great game.

Axis and Allies was a childhood favorite of mine.

Scrabble is definitely my favourite…chess is also good as is Othello, monopoly can also be good providing it doesn’t become: Banker endlessly bails you out monopoly! lol.

Forgot about this one. Another great game.
