Interesting. I think the most interesting thing would be what could possibly change so much in one year that Cleveland moved from 9th fattest to 24th fittest, or some of the other large moves like Wichita going from 17th fittest to 16th fattest (of course, they only ranked 50 cities, but still…). I’m sure Shugart noted Arlington, TX went from 8th fattest to 21st fittest.
They gave the factors for this year, but I didn’t look to see if they were the exact same as last year – they may have added or subtracted a category.
Maybe it is just where I was, but when I was in Miami there were a lot of fit people. Of course I like a little badonkadonk when checking out the ladies, so perhaps the “Women’s Ass Size” catagory pushed Miami into the “Fattest City” rankings.
I’m not suprised Omaha makes it on there just about every year, despite having one of the highest number of resteraunts per capita and a fairly crappy climate. I’ve lived in northern california and denver and rarely saw any one jogging, you can drive around omaha on a below freezing day with poorly plowed streets and will still see several people jogging. People here are dedicated! (however I prefer the warm indoors you won’t catch my ass out there this time of year! wind chill was around -20 and I still saw several people out exercising today)
NYC being #6 on that list is so wrong it’s not even funny. THAT, in and of itself, shows you what a bullshit list this is. I do believe the cities were measured by such factors as which ones have the most parks and outdoor space in which to excercise, therefore THEORETICALLY making the people in that city most LIKELY to be fit.
However, NYC is probably the single slimmest large city in the nation. I’ve said it before on these forums, but when you leave the City, even just drive an hour away (and I know, because I grew up in upstate NY, a few hours away), the first thing you start to notice is all the freaking FAT people! They hardly even EXIST in NYC. I work right near Times Square, where a decent amount of tourists are wandering around, and my friends and I all joke about how we can point out tourists from a mile away by 2 key factors: they’re fat and they wear white sneakers. Truly, it’s almost shocking how much slimmer this town is than the rest of our fat nation.
Who here is from Seattle, I think that would say something. I have been going to Seattle for 10 years and I have not seen hardley any fit people there.
I’m from Seattle, and i have to disagree. I don’t know about fittest city in the nation but I have noticed far more fit people here than other places. It all depends on what you consider “fit”. Do you mean large and ripped, or just skinny? I have seen a lot of people who “jog every day, and I might start training with weights a couple times a week…”. There is definitely more of a physical culture here than other places. I have traveled in New Mexico a lot and found that there were fewer people who regularly exercised. And when they did, they looked like dried chili peppers with pants. Damn sun.
