is shooting and killing a grizzley bear where he lives illegal? Yes.
so what he did was/is illegal.
Was it self defense? Maybe (but I would say yes) it will still be investigated though.
I dont think he really did anything wrong though and I HIGHLY DOUBT that he will get a fine or any jail time. A crime (which he committed) has to be investigated… and I’m sure i’ll be thrown out.

It has to be seen as some sort of self defense. Maybe not “self” but can’t that include family or something?
If a bald eagle swoops down and tries to snatch up one of my girls, and I have a rifle (Not a shotgun, I’m not THAT stupid) near me, I’d probably try and shoot the fucker before he got away. After running and making a diving catch to save my daughters life (obvi), should I go to jail for shooting an endagered species?
And, upon re-reading your post, Greg, that last line is LOL-worthy. Yes, you WILL be thrown out.
The Bald Eagle is no longer on the endangered species list. So, you’re cool, Spanky.

the story doesnt really add up.
dude was inside the house when he hears screaming (presumably his kids outside who saw the bear?)
he runs outside to see 3 bears in his yards and his kids (who were screaming) have gone back to playing basketball
he fears for his childrens lives so much that he leaves them outside, runs back inside to grab a gun.
then he goes back outside and shoots/kills one of the bears.
???
doesnt add up to me.
Well, an alternative would be to bring the kids in when he went to get a gun. Then maybe call animal control.
exactly.
if he woulda grabbed his gun on the way out and then blasted the bear in the yard “to protect his kids” then this would be a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ballgame if you ask me.

Well that’s good, because that happened last week. Thanks for looking out for me, Tiger

bald eagles are still protected by state and federal law.
This case is pretty interesting. Lots of political theater and emotional issues in the mix.

I don’t think bozos care. There is a dead bear here Push. Dead.

You can hardly imagine how infuriating it is to see a bunch of city boyzzz sitting around theorizing about how a man on the Idaho/British Columbia border should have “called animal control” while three grizzlies fuck around in his yard, near his kids, pigs and property.
I can’t imagine the infuriation, you are right. Texas killed all it’s bears way before I was born (We have a habit of doing things like that) and I live in Houston anyway, one of the nations biggest cities.
I do hunt in far West Texas sometimes though, also very rugged, sparsely populated and full of mountain lions. Even if I just saw a mountain lion, kids nearby or not, I’d shoot his ass. Big predators usually don’t make their presence known unless they have been stalking and are coming close for a hunt, no sense risking it.
I’m all for killing the big fucker but it is a little weird he went outside, saw the bear and his kids, went back inside with out his kids and came back out though.
He should have brought his kids in, grabbed the gun, gone back outside and killed the big fucker.
But I can’t judge, I wasn’t there. And city boyzzz just don’t know. “Forgive them father for they know not what they do…”
If I were a little more tech savvy, the part where gizmo gets a little too close would be a great “Come At Me Bro” meme.
LOL, that stupid cat is just lucky the bird already had lunch.
As for bears, if they are not scared enough to stay out of the yard and away from people, then they are a potential danger to anyone who may cross it’s path. I would not hesitate to shoot it.

Yeah, we have it easy in the burbs. Still though, we do teach our children to come inside if there are predators out. Seriously, why the hell were his kids not immediately inside once they saw the bear.
Also, the guy should have followed the rangers advice in protecting his pigs by putting up an electrical fence. Could have put one around his place as well. It sounds like there were warnings enough. And putting up the fence is easy, I’ve helped put one up.
I am not saying there are times that shooting bears is not necessary, I am just saying this one is questionable with the information they have put out. I have lived in different places where black bears were common in the summer, or coyotes and wolves the year round. Home and landowners had responsibility to discourage incidents with the predators. In this case it seems teaching his kids to come in when they see bears and putting up an electric fence, were things he should have done.
Warning shots could have been effective as well. But shooting a little bear, out of three, one that posed little risk, just sounds off. I have read enough Jack Reacher novels to know that in immediate danger, you take the big ones out first-especially if they are the leader.
I still want to know how close were the bears to the people.
