Father Shoots Grizzly

Last time I checked grizzlies pretty much DGAF about humans. That’s why when hunters shoot animals in grizzly country they go hide up in a tree for 15-30 minutes to make sure there isn’t a grizzly bear coming to decapitate them.

What would you do in this situation?
Save his cats…

The dad was in the shower when he heard his kid’s scream. If the bear posed an IMMEDIATE threat, that kid would have been attacked and killed before the dad could even get the chance to get out the door, let alone GO BACK INSIDE to retrieve his gun.

Should he be charged with a crime? No way. The bear was on his property, and the guy wasn’t intentionally hunting bear that day.
If the bear was posing an immediate threat, shoot; if not, then I see why charges might be brought.

I cannot string together a coherent argument (no sleep) but it could be something like this: people move out to be with nature and then get pissed when nature enters their yard. Did the bears climb a fence? Were bears common in that area (if so, where is the damn fence)? the real question is did he have to shoot? On property could put the animals an acre (for you city types that is about one block) or more away.

Now, in Texas it would be fine as long as either private property signs were posted or if the bears were stealing from him (or his neighbors).

I don’t care about the “why” a grizzly bear is in your yard and neither should you. It’s simply not germane to the point. Why is this guy being prosecuted??? Why are they wasting tax dollars (can’t even ask that question in today’s society without it being heavily rhetorical).
Why, because he broke a law. Its pretty simple.

I honestly don’t know the circumstances so I can’t comment. The details seem really sketchy.

He should have employed the SSS method.

shoot
shovel
shutup

Laws serve as protection. Protection of a child should take precedence over protecting a bear.
Oh, so you didnt hear? Animals are now worth more than humans
Dogs with whom an owner shares a certain bond vs. a stranger perhaps. But a man’s son vs. a strange bear…

the story doesnt really add up.

dude was inside the house when he hears screaming (presumably his kids outside who saw the bear?)
he runs outside to see 3 bears in his yards and his kids (who were screaming) have gone back to playing basketball
he fears for his childrens lives so much that he leaves them outside, runs back inside to grab a gun.
then he goes back outside and shoots/kills one of the bears.
???

doesnt add up to me.

Well when you put it that way…

But can you blame a guy for wanting a grizzly trophy?

as far as him being investigated/possibly facing charges… he should.

is shooting and killing a grizzley bear where he lives illegal? Yes.

so what he did was/is illegal.

Was it self defense? Maybe (but I would say yes) it will still be investigated though.

I dont think he really did anything wrong though and I HIGHLY DOUBT that he will get a fine or any jail time. A crime (which he committed) has to be investigated… and I’m sure i’ll be thrown out.

Haha, don’t bring that kind of reason to a BG thread!!!

if I ever shot a bear I would totally get it stuffed and mounted as a trophy. Put that bad boy on the side of a fireplace. Maybe put funny outfits on him depending on the season/upcoming holiday/big sporting event. It would be awesome

It has to be seen as some sort of self defense. Maybe not “self” but can’t that include family or something?

If a bald eagle swoops down and tries to snatch up one of my girls, and I have a rifle (Not a shotgun, I’m not THAT stupid) near me, I’d probably try and shoot the fucker before he got away. After running and making a diving catch to save my daughters life (obvi), should I go to jail for shooting an endagered species?

And, upon re-reading your post, Greg, that last line is LOL-worthy. Yes, you WILL be thrown out.

Wait until I get my stuff back from Africa. It’s going to be dress-up every day!

Fuck yeah! I’d take mine partying with me, like a mascot. The Grizzly Guzzler. I would hang a beer bong from his menacing paw because of course the taxidermist would stage him in attack mode.

first of all… I hate you and I’m throwing you out of this thread.

second of all… I think this will be a non issue. Of course it’ll be looked into (which it should) but it’ll end up being nothing in the end.

Normally I would agree, but if you have half a ton of grizzly in your garden that is not exactly the same as letting a deer disappear in the woods.
I’m sorry Grizzly is quite tasty. You can easily bury some, eat some, freeze some, and wear some: “What? These fur socks? I got them last week”

I’m not calling the guy a liar, but it does sound like a fishy story.

I really think their are some details missing in this story.

heres a lil more in depth article.

Well, an alternative would be to bring the kids in when he went to get a gun. Then maybe call animal control.
