Running??? Blasphemy!
running can never improve you conditioning and will destroy all strength gains… said no NFL strength coach
Exactly what are the wrong reasons?
james - LOL. Yeah I expected some stick.
Pete - Ha ha. You had me worried until I read the end. Exactly my reasoning. Being able to run doesn’t seem to do them any harm.

It’s because of something my wife’s sister and new partner said to me over the holiday period that I’ve been brooding on. They are both runners and were going to do their town’s traditional 4 mile Boxing Day run and both asked me on separate occasions (the day before mind you, it’s not as if they even gave me time to prepare) if I was going to do it. They know I lift and cycle, but they’re the sort of people who think that the ONLY real exercise and true measure of fitness is the ability to run long distances. So I declined and they said that was alright, in what I felt was a patronising, “just what I expected, all that time spent in the gym and he can’t even run 4 miles” condescending kind of way.
Any other challenge involving strength, speed, power, agility or flexibility and I’m sure I would have kicked their bony arses. Hell, I could probably out endurance them too, on a bike, but they happened to pick the only activity I’m really crap at, running. I know I shouldn’t let it bother me, but it does.
It’s not like I even want their respect, but I would never try to make someone feel like that. It’s not like when they stayed with us I’d say “right I’m off to squat 1 1/2 times my bodyweight for 20 reps, do either of you two want to join me? No? No takers? Alright then” and then leave with a self satisfied smirk on my face.
So I’m going to start doing 20 minutes or so, 3 times a week after lifting. I’m not going to go crazy with it, but just get good enough so next time they offer me a run I can accept and beat the tight calved, tiptoe walking, round shouldered pair of them.

I’m not trying to talk you out of running, but if you have your fat levels down and a basic level of conditioning, 4 miles shouldn’t be a big problem with just a little training. After I cut some weight I did fairly well at a local fun run with basically no “running” practice whatsoever. The thing that will do you in is just being too heavy.
As much as we hate to admit it, “I’ll show them” is a powerful incentive. I’m sure it’s far more common that we think.
ahahaha. i think that is a pretty good reason. so you are training for a 4 mile run for this time next year?
have you thought about the virtues of barefoot running? since you are starting out from the beginning and all??

Yup…Brett’s encounter with his relatives is similar to one I just had…I’ve added running 3 times a week into my routine…I’m not man enough to go a full 20 minutes at the moment, but 1/3 mile is the distance around my block which is what I run…I figure if I can run 1/3 mile in under 2 minutes I can catch and pummel any ‘runner’ that tries to make me feel small.

I know what you’re saying, but from personal experience I’ve found cardio work to be the most activity specific. Despite having a base level of endurance from cycling and being able to run in the form of hillsprints, the two combined don’t seem to give me any ability whatsoever to run slightly longer distances. Maybe it’s just me! I think if I want to be able to run a few miles, I’m going to have to run a few miles.

The stupid thing is they probably don’t even know I took it as an insult in the first place and I’ll probably not be there at Christmas for quite a few years, so the only reason I’m really doing it is to prove to me I can. Daft eh?

I couldn’t do 20 minutes now. My run last night was only 10 minutes, probably not even a mile. Once that becomes more comfortable I’ll add distance until I’m running for about 20 minutes and then keep the distance the same and try and reduce the time. I don’t want to get caught up in trying to run longer and longer distances.

Not at all. Makes perfect sense to me and is the same reason that fuels my pullups.

No I’m not specifically training for that run, just to have the ability if the same situation arose again.
Funnily enough I was reading some stuff on running shoes last night and there seems to be a direct link between the more expensive the shoe and the greater the likelihood of injury. Now like me you’ll probably think the more serious the runner the more miles they would do and the more they’d pay for a shoe, but the study took distance into account! So it seems the more stability and cushioning the shoe has the less “feel” your foot has and therefore the greater the chance of injury. So it summed up by saying don’t pay a lot for running shoes. Now I can buy a cheap pair without feeling they’ll do me an injury. Great!!
As for running barefoot, I’ve read some interesting stuff too, but that’s never gonna happen. I have the worlds most sensitive feet. When I was young I used to chase my little sisters around the garden barefoot and they knew if they stood on the gravel by the clothes airer I couldn’t get them. One foot on that and I’d be on my knees in agony.
Many the childhood holiday I spent marooned on the beach while my family frolicked in the sea because the particle size of the sand at the water’s edge was greater than 5mm.
I also run in Wales. If I ran in bare feet I’d probably end up with trenchfoot.
KP - YEAH!! YEAH!! We’ll show ourselves!
Friday night’s session
4/1/2013
Deadlift
10 x 135 lbs
5 x 220 lbs
5 x 264 lbs
3 x 286 lbs
3 x 308 lbs
3 x 330 lbs
2 x 352 lbs
1 x 374 lbs
Weighted chins
3 x 4 x 33 lbs
Glute bridges
4 x 10 x 264 lbs
One arm DB row
2 x 9 x 124 lbs (each arm)
RDLs
3 x 8 x 176 lbs
DB curls
2 x 10 x 36 lbs
Did the deads touch and go up to 308 lbs. Probably good for 400, but kept it for next time. Too many sets beforehand. Played about with a hook grip on the last few sets. I quite liked it.
Did the RDLs without standing fully upright (tnation article) kept a 30 degree forward lean. Great idea, it really keeps the stress on the hamstrings and I’m sorer today than I would be using 50 lbs more for the same reps. Definitely going to keep doing them this way.
10 minute run.
In the wet again. This has been the 2nd wettest year in the UK since records began.
So you took all our water. The U.S. had killer droughts last year.
Good lifting. And good luck with the running.

Thats when you said “Fine, we’ll all go and squat double our body weight and then go do the running. Tahts fair right?”
Okay I would have said “Fuck off weakasses” but maybe the above would have been better for you.

I don’t think swearing at the wife’s relatives would be a good idea. She still hasn’t quite forgiven me for last Christmas when I choked out her great aunt with a triangle hold after she beat me at Scrabble.
Bitch deserved it. She probably cheated.
Do you have that article on RDLs?
james
by ‘barefoot running’ i didn’t really mean barefoot. i meant the trendy, shod, variety ![]()
the idea is that they protect your feet from all the crap you mentioned, while letting you get the advantages of barefoot running (waking up the smaller muscles in your feet - i really noticed they woke up my calves and parts of my quad and glute, too).
they make (because it hurts otherwise) you run lightly on the balls of your feet whereas lots of running shoe padding encourages you to strike hard through your heel.
but this is really controversial…

They wee asking for it.
My wife has a couple of relatives like that and when I shut them down she just laughed at them.
