Farmer's Log 2

I always found it weird that Benny Hill was actually a homosexual (allegedly) I was a fan of Benny Hill, a true thinking mans comedian, and a great American

Blarg the thought of that squating makes my stomach flip.

20 rep squats. I scoff at thee! actually I don’t that is some sick work with 242! And 14 chins…bad assery!!

Those training diaries represent 20+ years of blood, sweat, and tears -love the pic.

Wrt 20 rep squats, I’ll be that guy, and say that although they are hard as fuck and something I would never be able to talk myself into doing unless life or money was at stake, I have to say that pretty much all they accomplish is to make you better at doing 20 rep squats. Anything above the 10-12 range is about endurance, mental as well as physical. For strength or even health, think Law of Diminishing Returns.

Bring on more python !!

I had to watch several episodes of Python before I could understand them. Glad I did. Some episodes are hilarious, other ehh.

Fun fact: there’s a computer language called Python, and yes, it’s named after the group.

Very cool! Glad I’m not the only pack rat when it comes to logs. Bet it would be fun to flip through and see how far you’ve actually came.

training is looking solid

20 reps squats are intriguing and kind of crazy
and makes me want to do some.

big chuckles at ‘health’ or holistic freaks always being sick
I spend a long time as a vegetarian and plenty of veggie friends
where always sick or ill

I couldn’t agree with you more. I wouldn’t even be surprised if in years to come we see members of the public suing their governments for recommending ‘healthy diets’ that in fact made them obese and diabetic.

Matty, Joe, Old Goat, BN, Kev and Cavalier - Thanks for the comments guys.

Lumberjack song made my day.

Funny only last week we were talking about the lumberjack squat and the same video got posted on the indigo livespill as well.

Benny Hill’s theme song is my current ring tone. That show was really the only pre pron a 14 year old in '77 could get. (No Internets)

Did I go to far with that? lol

I know exactly what you are saying. I do realise heavy, low rep sets are the most ‘efficient’ way to build strength, but I’ve had my fill of waking up feeling like I’m 72 instead of 42. After 20 rep squats I feel like I’ve really worked (which is important to me) and the next day I can feel it in my muscles and not my joints, with low rep work, sadly it’s the other way around. I guess what I’m trying to say is that I’m not prepared to feel beat up all the time anymore for the sake of 20lbs on my 1 rep max and I do believe that 20 rep squats can still get me stronger, but in a more roundabout way.

I’d have to argue the point about saying “or even health” though!!

BN - I was just about to post my favourite Monty Python sketch. I’ll youtube it now.

Colin - LOL. I know exactly what you mean. That and black and white French films. Anything with Alain Delon I found. Although the problem with Benny Hill was that they were always running around in fastforward…so hard to focus!!

Bulldog - Great sketch. This is my personal favourite.

My favourite line…“ahhh, we used to dream of living in a corridor!”

Just for fun, here is the first workout I could find. 21 years old and 155 lbs.

9th March 1990

Squat @ 82 lbs x 7

Leg Curls x 7 (done lying on front on floor using other leg as resistance)

DB one arm row @ 28 lbs x 6

DB bench press @ 28 lb’ers x 9

Tricep dips x 4 (done between benches)

Barbell curls @ 28 lbs x 7

Behind neck press @ 28 lbs x 7

Sit ups x ? (it was left blank?)

It took 35 minutes and the comment I put at the bottom was “good”.

Ahh bless! I guess we all have to start somewhere.

Saturday’s lifting.

10/12/2011

20 rep squat @ 253 lbs x 20

Chins @ bw x 13

Military press @ 154 lbs x 7

DB one arm row @ 85.5 lbs x 10

Weighted push up (feet elev. 16") @ bw + 44 lbs x 15

GHR @ bw x 15

Band pullaparts (2 bands) x 15

Face pulls @ 60 lbs x 15

EZ 21s @ 75.9 lbs x 1 set (21 reps)

Ab rollouts @ bw (with 7 sec. pause) x 9

20 rep squats are starting to get difficult. Going to go for 264 on Monday then drop to a 5.5 lb increase every other session with a 220 lb session inbetween.

Dropped a rep on chins because I paused longer in the dead hang position for some reason. I’m going to start adding weight on these now.

Need to find some way of progressing on the weighted push ups apart from adding reps. The logistics of getting more plates on my back is a problem. Maybe elevate my feet more? I’d be grateful for ideas folks.

Got the same problem with the GHRs too.

Agree with your point(s) actually -I feel that way with 8s and 10s for squats. I guess my health comment might be overly influenced by all the videos I’ve seen of people collapsed on the ground after finishing (or failing to finish) a 20 rep squat set.

For GHRs, can’t you just hold a weight plate to your chest?

For pushups, go one arm.

I love that you have your first workout documented from back when you were 21. Can you post a pic to go with that workout?

Great work and I’m totally impressed with the 20 reps because, as you say, the weight is definitely getting up there.

I agree about low reps and joints. I definitely feel better with the higher reps even if I’m not technically as strong.
