Totally! I love watching movies from the 70-80s that are set in NYC. This place is Disneyland compared to what it was back in the day.

Taxi Driver, Urban Cowboy, hell, even Moonstruck (set in my hood no less!). Love em all just cuz i get to see NY in its heyday.
Urban Cowboy F T W ! I was telling that kid who wanted to move to NYC with a G in his pocket to watch it cuz he would turn into Jon Voight…another movie that stands the test of time.

Also gotta throw the Warriors for awesome NYC scenes of the 70s
Matty, do you live in (and love) NYC?
Yes sir, I will always Love NYC…but Im not in love with it anymore…LOL.

Actually theres a very good chance I will be moving to DURTY JURSY in the near future!

Twelve Angry Men was in B&W, worth a look. So is DR.Strangelove, just to see the genius of Peter Sellers, George C.Scott was hilarious too.

Friday the Thirteenth,1 through 12? lol.

No James Bond! WTF? Bond is…well Bond! Bond girls gave me my first “what’s happening in my pajamas?, my pee pee seems happy right now and I don’t know why” lol. Pussy Galore #1 all time bond girl.

It’s funny, Bond movies are filled with cheese to please which I love, but I can’t stand horror flick cheese lol…weird.

The Exorcist
Schindler’s List
any Star Trek movie except for the newest one
Gone With the Wind
Requiem For a Dream

that’s it. I’ve literally watched ALL of the so-called classics other than these. I’ve seen every Hitchcock film, I’ve seen all of Kubrick’s films, all of Fellini’s big ones, Herzog’s, etc etc. And I’ve gotta say Nards, your list is shocking. You are a seriously underprivileged movie-watcher if you have not seen A Clockwork Orange, Dr Strangelove, The Godfather, Apocolypse Now or the Man With No Name trilogy.

And since it was slandered so horrifically in another thread, I must come to the defense of the Godfather. I know it isn’t a fast-paced movie with a ton of action and so on. But the aim of the movie is not to hit you over the head with everything. Subtlety is an art, and no movie captures this art better than The Godfather. You MUST pay attention when watching it; there are all sorts of little things that happen that add to the plot that most people who are used to being blasted in the face by a movie will miss entirely.

I don’t want to make any rash generalizations, but The Godfather is a highly intellectual movie that requires thought. It is not a visual movie that attempts to bombard your sense of sight and sound (although it is visually stunning in many ways, but in a neo-noir way, not a visual effects way; it is REAL). I think that those who do not enjoy it are the type who simply do not want any sort of intellectual stimulation or are simply lacking in the requisite intelligence needed to enjoy such a great story.

In short, concerning those who thought it was boring: you are boring, not the movie. For those who thought it was slow: you are slow, not the movie. For those who thought it was overrated or horrible: if anything the movie is underrated and the problem is not with the movie but with you.

Am I being biased here? Probably, but criticizing The Godfather or saying it isn’t good is like saying that Led Zeppelin wasn’t a great rock band. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but not all opinions are of equal import and in this case, the opinion is flawed, not the movie. I think every director in Hollywood would be well-served to strive to make movies with the subtlety, dedication to character development and reality, and ability to thrive despite pandering to the audience’s base instincts like The Godfather does.

Oh I see I have to like it…my bad, fuck it I saw all of them and gave it a fair chance and I didnt like it…didnt force my opinion on anyone, just stated it.

If you knew me the last thing you would say is I am boring. Asshole, maybe but not boring.

Should I consider you a sheep or follower because you consider the Godfather a great movie?

I dont give a fuck if your Roger Ebert, if I didnt like a movie I’m allowed to say I didnt like it.

Edit

Your post was so eloquent with a stunning use of vocabulary you seem like a very learned individual espescially with regards to the cinema, its unfortunate that with all this intelligence you fall into the pitfall of stupidity by generalizing someone because of their dislike of a highly regarded movie of the masses.

My God, why… WHY?! I want to get the hell out of NJ!

its neck and neck between Jersey City and Miami. Im petrified to move that far away from NYC, but for my own sanity I may have to.

I like Jersey, it smells good

If the hustle and bustle of the city got you fried, why not move Upstate, White Plains, or Peekskill or something more reserved. You’ll only be minutes away from the city.

Its certainly an option, actually was just up in Dutchess County and passed peekskill it looked nice

Schindler’s List one of those that slipped by me and just have not taken the time to see. Nards WTF, you have not seen The Good the bad and the Ugly?
The only Clint Eastwood Cowboy movie I’ve seen is Unforgiven. In 1992. I’d like to see others but yeah, just haven’t gotten around to it. I should do it, but I’d need to get the DVD as I won’t watch movies on my computer. I don’t like it.

Schindler’s List
One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest
All of Stanley Kubrik’s films except Eyes Wide Shut (I’ve seen that and regret that I did)
Casablanca and anything else with Bogart
Goodfellas
Rear Window
Psycho
American Psycho
It’s a Wonderful Life
Citizen Kane
Apocalypse Now (no excuse I actually own the DVD)
Taxi Driver
Saving Private Ryan
Vertigo
The Pianist
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Requiem for a Dream
Chinatown
LA Confidential
Das Boot (I saw some of this, not all)
Yojimbo
Ben Hur

I could keep going, I’m sourcing from the IMDb top 250. In fact I’d be happy if every film I saw for the next decade was only one starring Jack Nicholson or Robert DeNiro.

In my opinion best movies he ever did, and Josey Wales being the best. I have easly seen these movies at least a hundred times at least 3-4 times a year I watch the G B & U and Josey Wales. If you like the Unforgiven you will like this X 10 more.

Lord of The Rings
Titanic
Avatar
ET
One Flew over…
Dirty Dancing
The Rocky Horror Show
Easy Rider

Ones I’ll get round to:
Lawrence of Arabia
Casablanca+ Bogart in general
On the Waterfront

Amen. Every young male should be made to watch these to see what a timeless real man looks like. The first two Dirty Harry’s are awesome also.

The Big Lebowski
The Good,The Bad and the Ugly

Nards, you need to see these now. Especially #2.

^^Yeah out of this entire thread I cant believe that Nards hasnt seen The Big Lebowski… Thats mind bottling! ‘I’m having a beverage here man’

Yes in my old age forgot to mention the Dirty Harry’s. I know there are discussions about who was more a bad ass, Clint or John Wayne but I always favored Clint.

If you like DeNiro and Jack, then you MUST see Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Chinatown and The Shining.

Fuck, if you ever rent a movie or buy a DVD, don’t do so unless it’s one off of your list above. Shit, I would start by watching every Kubrick film he ever made (except Barry Lyndon), then move on to the ones I mentioned, then move to Apocolypse Now, LA Confidential, Psycho, Vertigo, Rear Window (along with anything else Hitchcock ever made up to The Birds, especially Dial M for Murder, Rope, North by Northwest, Notorious, Shadow of a Doubt, Strangers on a Train and The Man Who Knew Too Much), American Psycho and Saving Private Ryan.

These movies are absolute classics! I mean, seriously, this is a who’s who of the greatest films of all time.

I also recommend Citizen Kane, but I thought it was a little overrated. Ben Hur is great too, but very long. It’s a Wonderful Life…ehh. Casablanca, another great film. Might not be up your alley as it’s a romance film, but I also recommend The Maltese Falcon with Bogart. Yojimbo, great, but not one I’d put above these others as far as must-see. Das Boot is another great one, but I think the Director’s Cut is something like 4 hours long.

Don’t know if you’ve seen these, but if you like DeNiro and Jack, here’s some more I’d check out:
Jack: A Few Good Men, Batman, Easy Rider, The Departed and Terms of Endearment
DeNiro: The King of Comedy, Godfather 2, Casino, Mean Streets, Raging Bull (perhaps his finest performance), The Deer Hunter, The Untouchables, Backdraft, Brazil, Cape Fear (another superior performance), Heat and Meet the Fockers.

Personally prefer Clint also. Even pushing 80 he displays more testosterone than 5000 Justin Biebers and Shia lebeoufs put together:

(I’d say G Torino was only one step down from the ones already mentioned, and probably sneaks into his top 10)

Thanks for the list, appreciated. I’ve seen some of those but I really need to see Easy Rider, The Departed, Cuckoo’s Nest, The Shining (how could I forget this!) and from the DeNiro selection I have to see Raging Bull and the Deer Hunter. I loved Cape Fear, it’s so damn chilling and A Few Good Men is one of my favourite films of all time (I never get tired of watching this film).

Hitchcock? Yes that needs a movie marathon too.
