Probably old news to a lot of people but I’ve been doing some “research” (google) on olive oil scams. A lot of olive oil is combined with other oils such as pomace, canola oil or some other cheap oil. Not sure why I never heard of this before. Makes me wonder about those big tins of olive oil at you can buy for $30.00.
Here’s part of an article written by TC. http://www.T-Nation.com/readArticle.do?id=1689975
“However, in February of 2006, the FDA did manage to nab 61,000 liters of supposedly extra virgin olive and an additional 26,000 liters of a lower-grade olive oil from a New Jersey warehouse presumably run by guys who said, “fugedaboudit,” a lot. The oil consisted almost entirely of soy oil.”
I always wondered why I felt sick after taking a teaspoon or two of oil in my protein drinks. Could I have been drinking soy oil?
Ugh…
This leads to other questions such as what else is adulterated or fake? I seem to get sick more than other people. I eat well, exercise, sleep and take supplements. Friends of mine have crappy diets, little sleep, don’t exercise and take no supplements. They don’t get sick as much as I do.
Could it be I’m getting sick from fake supplements?
As a plus to Biotest, I always felt great after using their products.
A teaspoon of oil will not make you sick. Why would soy do this but not olive oil? Real EVOO has a very specific taste to it, and burns a bit as it goes down. You should know it when you taste it. As far as getting sick all the time, you probably have AIDS.

I thought the T-Nation forums might be a bit different since I’ve read through all the T-Nation articles since 1999.
Perhaps this isn’t the best place to get information. I’ll try elsewhere.[/quote]
You got one bad response (from a guy who uses a pic of Johnny Rotten as an avatar) and one good response, yet you chose to only respond to the bad one, then blame an entire community for it?. Get a thicker skin, Bud…
The whole EVOO scam thing has had me going for a while and I wish I had fabulous definitive answers, but I do not. Not being an expert I’ve done my best to dig up some locally available brands that I can be passably certain are of decent quality. Also not being rich I have to do the best I can with what I have.
You seem like a reasonably intelligent feller, at least from 2 posts. Like Blacksnake said, this site has a HUMONGOUS number of members. Try not to be so quick to write them all off on the basis of a few posts.

Given the way the supplement industry operates, I’m not even sure how one defines “fake supplements.”
Anway, diet pills aside, it makes more sense to legally sell people pills full of rice flour or random safe leaves than it does to risk jail time for selling supplements adulterated with anything dangerous, which would not be likely to cost any less to make. And I really doubt that anyone is putting immuno-supressants into yours.
When I switched to the Anabolic Diet, I suddenly started consuming almost 3/4 cup of Extra Virgin Olive Oil a day.
I developed a sore in my mouth and felt no better, despite having completed the AD’s introductory phase. I read the articles you posted on EVOO, and ran my own test using a high-quality EVOO brand as a control.
Yup. The cheap stuff is crap. I switched, felt better, and the mouth-sore disappeared.
As far as your general questions go, EVOO probably is not the cause of your sickness unless you’re taking a bunch of it. And your supps aren’t fake if you’re buying from Biotest.

Yes. I was being oh-so horrible. Lighten up. I was trying to make the point that distinguishing the real stuff from the fake stuff is not really that difficult if you know what to look for. It has a very distinctive taste, a low smoke point (as someone else mentioned), and tingles just a bit. I also felt the need to comment on the idea that a teaspoon of an oil could cause you chronic health problems, which is a rather ridiculous concept, unless the oil is being purposely poisoned, another ridiculous concept. I gave some decent information, I just didn’t coat it with as much sugar as would have liked, perhaps.

Don’t leave us in suspense, how did you test? Cooked it to see how hot before it smoked?
