Many Americans seem to operate under the belief that the U.S. Civil War, emancipation, and virtually every important events in U.S. history occurred a very long time ago.

That is absolutely not the case. The U.S. Civil War occurred started in 1861, only roughly 150 years ago. The fact that a couple of President Tyler’s grandchildren are alive strikes home the fact (though it is the case that Tyler had a couple kids when he was in his 60s, and those kids also had their kids quite late) that is not a very long time ago.

It puts a lot of things into perspective. Heck, it would probably help if many of the people in my generation and afterwards remembered that there are many, many people still alive who were our age around the time of the Civil Rights movement, and the existence of legalized segregation in the U.S.
