To all of the ‘just don’t have a Facebook profile’ people: there are an increasing amount of jobs that are requiring knowledge/use of social media like Facebook/Twitter for employment.
The better advice is probably to have multiple accounts(which I guess then requires a sort of lie that you are giving them your ‘real’ accounts to look at), at least if you want to be in one of those job fields… or just to not put incriminating things on there(I edited that one in because on reflection it is apparently not so obvious).

I have a job interview this month and I’m quite glad I don’t have facebook, I don’t want my prospective employers seeing some of the stuff that is up on there e.g. pictures of me wasted.
Was his previous job an exterminator?
The times I have seen this show up is jobs in corrections/police where who you communicate with might be an issue. A thorough background check involves talking to old neighbors and the like. This is still being felt out in the business community.
Let’s remember that Facebook beloved that privacy is unnecessary. That should be warning enough.

This seems more like a compliance measure than anything.
Employers don’t like when people say no to them. This is a great way to weed out anybody with a spine.
100%. The USA has become the Land of Obedience. Obey, and you are rewarded for obeying; fail to obey, and you are out. Competence is not even a factor.

The original reason I deleted my facebook account a couple or so years ago was because it brought too much drama to my life. Like people getting po’d because I didn’t add them to my friend list and things other people would post on my wall and whatnot. And I never got anything positive out of it anyway. Now that I’m hearing about this, I want a facebook account even less.
No, Raj, it’s not because I’m older, it’s because of this ^.
Facebook is for people who have trouble getting laid
You have no rights. The domination must be complete. Everyone is being trained to accept that the Government-Industry partnership can do whatever they want to you, and there is nothing you can do about it. It started with the TSA. Now it is spreading to this “demanding passwords” BS.
"The girl was called to a meeting with a deputy sheriff, school counselor and an unidentified school employee, the court documents states.
There, she was “intimidated” into giving up her login and passwords to her Facebook and e-mail accounts, the lawsuit says."
Personal life should have nothing to do with qualifications for a job. I’d much rather have somebody who goes out and makes a fool of themselves on the weekend but comes to work Monday to Friday and gets all their work done in a professional manner, then someone who always composes themselves professionally but sucks at their job.
And if an employer doesn’t hire someone based on what they do on their own time, then the employer better not be a hypocrite and guilty of doing the same things…ever.
whats stopping these people from just deleting their acct? That is sooooo unconstitutional. Whats stopping these people simply saying they don’t have a facebook acct? How would anyone know? Isn’t this an invasion of privacy?

Again, simply say you don’t have a facebook acct. If you didn’t put your real name on the fb site, them typing in your name in google, will not turn up anything. I tried already. doesn’t work.

A few people on this forum have been warning about this shit for years, now.
While I doubt it’s all that common right now (depending on the job, I mean), this “intrusiveness” is only going to become MORE common as these sites expand to encompass peoples’ lives to an increasingly greater extent, and certainly as individuals in managerial positions becomes more and more savvy with the technology (i.e., as the younger generations who GREW UP with this sorta shit as a social-staple fill those hiring positions).
Suddenly, that picture of you passed out on a bed with a vodka bottle half-filled with vomit isn’t all that funny when it’s used to buttfuck 4+ years of higher education and experience. And it’s gotta be depressing when even setting it to “private” no longer MAKES it private when you most want it to.
How is any employer going to know you have a fb acct. unless you tell them. When signing up for fb, simply use a different name other than your real one. Again, how will any employer know if you have fb or not?
I think the point is, you don’t want to have to start your employment relationship with a lie. If you’re flipping burgers, it probably won’t matter. But I could easily think of a scenario where an employee has an employment contract terminated for lying during the hiring process.

I haven’t used FB for years, but back when I had it in college the whole point was to “be friends” with people you actually know in real life.
I know it’s an advertising/marketing vehicle now, but I’m pretty sure the main appeal of FB for most people isn’t anonymity. That’s what forums are for.
