F150 5.4L 3v Trition - Ticking Noise

So…for xmas i bought myself an 05’ f150, it’s been babied, no winters, one owner, clean carfax, had my mechanics go through it closely --it’s clean.

Doing the exhaust, cat-back magnaflow, dump in the side in-front of rear wheel. it has been lifted, leveled, and I’ve had the raptor tire/rim package put on it. Likely getting it tuned on a dyno after i buy a nice tuner for it.

Question — it has a “very” ford slight tick, tick, tick - you can hear it more so on right side under wheel area.

CAM PHASERS???

I’m a douche, bought it, “As Is” but it’s been around 30days - I’m pretty articulate and good at influencing situations to get what i want/need. It’s from a reputable Ford dealer in ATL, GA.

Long story short - I want them to handle the fix, considering the amt. I just bought this fucker for. Prepared to be nice but thereafter if they are fuck knobs—what are my options.

Was going to go w/ the hey look I work for a big corp. with an affiliation/business relationship w/ Ford, e.g. friends w/ the Co. ATL VP etc, etc…maybe sprinkle in my wife is a big fucking shit @ Emory e.g we know a ton of people and I like to write and spread the word about companies who are not handling customers fairly, e.g I FEEL LIKE IF YOU DON’T HELP ON THIS YOU ALL ARE FUCKING ME DRY (I bought it as so technically - I’m fucked yes?) —

bla, bla, bla - I’ll be nice first but then clear that my intention is to really create a communication storm if they are less than helpful. Truth - as a family unit I/WE like Ford - if treated well we will likely buy cars fron them for the next 10yrs and beyond…

Does any of this bullshit input matter???

How can I get a leg up, wondering who at the dealership I should communicate w/? the sales guys will push me to parts and the parts fuckers will just say “fuck you pay me.” who would be the pt person at a car dealership?

Also back to the initial Q. The truck is sweet but at 100k I’m nit sure what is really causing the noise, the make/model/engine sseem to point at an engine issue common w/ this trition 5.4l 3v.

If the cam phasers shit out I’m fucked - whole engine and transmission could shit the bed. I’ve heard spark plugs, cam phasers, exhaust manifold, coils, — most f150 form shit and or youtube searches point ot the cam phasers.

I’ve heard ford gives feedback - use motorcraft oil and change it every 2500 + use motorcraft oil filters —it seems they are just masking a fault in this particular engine.

Anyways - the truck is mine now, how should I proceed - I think step one is to take it to my guys, not FORD, and get some feedback.

Chime in if you’ve read this far…I’ll post a pic of the truck and then of a hot ass, just because I miss the SAMA side of this side…

here she is…

and…

I’m not intimately familiar with those engines, but you should be able to use a broom handle to locate the source of the knock more specifically. Touch it to different parts of the engine and see where it’s loudest.

It’s the alternator going bad.

You can get a mechanics stethoscope at harbor freight for like 4 or 5 bucks. It’s quite a bit easier than trying to put a broom handle in your ear.

Is the tick new? Intermittent or constant? How loud and how often? So many variables here to try to even guess.

Some type of exhaust leak? Common
Blew the spark plug outta the head? Common
An actuator of some type malfunctioning? Common

constant, but occasional not present while at idle or on but parked - pronounced after any distance driving over 10-15 min, e.g as engine heat increases it is louder. right side is more audible.

today it seemed to misfire and want to die at a redlight, didn’t but i could feel a bit of a shake…

*also when cold and just driving in the a.m. i can here what sounds like thin dragging/flapping metal - hard to describe, my inherent instinct is to give it gas hard, feed it to clear or open the odd metal dragging noise- it feels inherently right to do that, it seems to clear and dissipate but seems to return at very low rpm going from idle to moving…

not sure if this is related to the ticking noise that increases as the engine warms - not even 100% the now check engine is related to these things – but i’m pretty fucking sure it is.

exhaust leak, cam phasers, lifters, oil viscosity getting too thin w/ heated engine causing misfire, coils, header, manifold, rocker arm, timing issues —

i’m getting in over my head.

Not happy.

Might be a header leak, I had that once after putting longtubes on my old Camaro and nothing I ever did was able to get rid of it entirely.

Hey, first post!

Have you plugged it into a code reader?

http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200460471_200460471?cm_mmc=Google-pla-_-Automotive-_-Automotive%20Diagnostics-_-14888&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=14888&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=14888&gclid=CJnNhfub6cICFRJcfgodFjgAvA

Best not to read too much internet until you pin point just where the sounds are coming from. It doesn’t take much of that to convince yourself you have every problem under the sun. The dragging / flapping could be the timing chain(s) (which could itself be a side effect of something else), or it could be something else. You really need to pin point where the noise is comming from before you even start guessing, or your just gonna end up throwing time and money away.

If you have a check engine light on atm, the computer can give you a code that might help diagnose it - i.e. if a fuel injector is sticking. You can probably go to autozone or whatever to get that read free of charge if you don’t have the tool.

Also, take a video under the hood & in the cab, and put it on youtube if you can. I’m sure there is an f150 4x4 site with lots of mechanical guys with experience with variable valve timed modular engines who could tell you what that sounds like to them. As I understand it a certain amount of noise is actually normal on those trucks, but just how much is ok would take an experienced ear.

If all else fails, shell out the hundred bucks for an hour of (a different) ford dealer time, and have them diagnose it for you. Just don’t panic and assume the worst. Every engine has “common problems”. You’d be surprised how uncommon those common problems usually are.

I have an '06 FX4 with the same engine and at 100K I ended up paying THOUSANDS on engine issues. Ended up replacing all of the spark plugs (yes they broke EVERY FUCKING ONE getting them out - a notorious problem for that engine), coils, new Jasper transmission repacked the front and the rear, as well as new belts and alternator.

NOW it runs perfectly! LOL I’m going to give it to my kid when he turns 18 and get’s into the Apprenticeship and hope it lasts him five years.

I’ve owned a Dodge Ram 1500, GMC Sierra, Chevy S10 quarter ton, and I like some things about this Ford (despite the seats being uncomfortable as shit compared to the Dodge) but after this experience my next truck will probably be a Silverado Z71 or a Dodge Ram 2500. Shoulda listened to what they say about Fords:

Fix Or Repair Daily
Found On Road Dead
Fucked Over Rebuilt Dodge
Fat Old Redneck Driving

Any more? LOL

Check under the hood and make sure the Duramax/Allison combo is there. If not, replace with Silverado 2500.

A/C, half ton, get a Tundra, hands down. 2500, I just think the Duramax/Allison combo is tough to beat.

No need to push. I’d be glad to give you a tow behind my Duramax.

My 2000 Suburban has 340,000 miles on it.

If I need an engine, I can get one for $350 with 100,000 miles on it. The junkyards are full of wrecked Silverados, Tahoes, Suburbans, and Escalades with good engines. Try finding a used Triton V8. Over $2000 for one if you can find one. Seems everyone needs one to fix their Ford truck.

I’m sure I’ll make 500,000 miles on my Chevy.

Cummins would be tempting if not for the shitty wrapper. Just gotta stay away from anything in a ford after the 7.3 (which I have in my 2003 and have zero complaints about).

Pictured: Uncle’s 2010 F450. 40 thousand miles, and one month out of warranty it stranded him half way home (Ontario) from Florida. Engine is right bitched. He had the lemon decals made up for the trip home (trailered with the chevy this one replaced).
