Evolution

600 years ago, if you told someone - anyone - one day people could fly, set foot on the moon, talk with a friend on the other side of the planet by use of a little box, and have the power to instantaneously destroy the whole planet…they would laugh so hard on your face their guts might burst through. And who could blame them?

Afterall, to them a reliable means of transportation - an efficient one - consisted of a horse or a chariot, or a boat. Navigating in the seas was the ultimate challenge. Half the world was still waiting to be discoverd - the Americas were still unknown to the Europeans. Heck, they only had a ‘suspicion’ that maybe there is another continent westwards. But it was just a fable.
The average lifespan was much shorter. Most people still didnt even know how to write a simple sentence, lest be educated on things like health or fitness.

It’s AMAZING how MUCH and how FAST we’ve accomplished all we did. We’ve been around, as a species, for millions of years - yet in the last couple centuries we’ve made unbelievable progress. Scientists now believe by 2070 - and that’s a very conservative estimate to them - we’ll be able to extend our lifespan MUCH longer…they say soon we’ll be able to, if we wanted it, extend our lifespan indefinitely, or at least for great lengths of time. All because of the progress that was made in these last few centuries.
Stephen Hawkings, a very well-known Physicist, is of the firm belief that all misteries of Physics will be known before the end of this next century. Scientists believe eventually travel NEAR speed of light will become a reality - or at leat we’ll have the capability to do it.

Well, for the next century alone, it seems we have quite a few accomplishments planned out.

What precipitated all this unbelievable development in the last few centuries? Was it the competition in the seas - when Portugal, Spain, France, England were competing to for colonies and spice markets? Maybe culture? Afterall Greece and Italy did go through an era that valued a very rich culture that included all arts and sciences - I dont believe we’d have otherwise seen Michael Angelo or Leonardo Dicaprio’s accopmlishments.

It seems that competition between civilizations was the main motivator here. Civilizations were going extinct because another had devloped far superior weapons, means of transportation, soldiers. This would lead other civilizations to compete for the very best technology around, in order to ensure their existence. Remember the Incas, and other similar civilizations that went extinct?
However, we didnt all of a sudden get more competitive in the last millenium, and we certainly didnt get any smarter in the last millenium.

Maybe a certain number of factoirs were present at exactly the right time and precipitated all this. But it just seems hard to believe that if someone can notice that steam can produce power, thus leading to invention of trains and powered machinery, that NO ONE ELSE would reach the same conclusion in the very lengthy existence we’ve had. Ancient civilizations are known to have been very cultural. At the very least, the Egiptians could have reached a similar conclusion since they were so cultural.

I dont know, it just boggles me.

Aliens gave us the technology.

"…Michael Angelo or Leonardo Dicaprio’s accopmlishments. "

I believe that should be Leonardo DaVinci?

In any case, the acceleration of technology is a fact of scientific life. New technologies are built on the shoulders of existing technologies.

Yeah, nice geometric progress curve.

With all that new data and stuff to learn, I hope one day one will be able to download it straight to the brain. Otherwise, we’ll have to study until we’re 30+ years old just to stay on par.

Yeah, I know, speculation. ;0)

"…Michael Angelo or Leonardo Dicaprio’s accopmlishments. "

I believe that should be Leonardo DaVinci?

– Are you kidding me? Where would we be without Titanic??

Dont underestimate the power of a good movie.

Cough cough

Yeah, my dog is all over my keyboard too (what, others have dogs typing for them, I have one too).

I stand by the theory of Stargate…

Two pieces of technology need to be developed and perfected to make this revolution occur. The first is the perfection of a Quantum computer. The second is the perfection of nanotechnology. Once these two technologies are integrated on your planet, you humans will be on the same plane as the rest of the galaxy.

Fucking damn Hedo did you read my mind??? I was going to go in depth on a number of things…quantum computers and nanotech in particular. And how they are synergistic in many tasks. I always say whoever gets nanotech first will rule the world.

Diesal: As for Steven Hawkings prediction…that has been made many times before. So if he’s wrong I wouldn’t be surprised.

RenegadeDragon: Why don’t you read Gods of the New Millennim by Alan F. Alford. I have 3 of his books…still to read dammit. But the premise is basically where I think Stargate got their ideas from. However this dude is dead serious. Now he doesn’t talk of the Ghould or anything but that Aliens appeared as Gods in ancient times due to their supperior technology. Ciao.

Oh and diesal…of course we all of the sudden are rising up faster and faster in technology. It’s a geometric thing. It’s pretty hard to create, say a gun when everyone else has a spear. What I’m trying to say is that our technology is based on all the mistakes and trials of our ancestors. I know pretty obvious but I still had to state it. Now compound that with computers, air travel and the amazing communication technology we have and progress is of course exploding far better than ever before.

Why do you assume that progress is always made? It is quite possible that we will regress or be destroyed as opposed to advance in the future. What about the dark ages as an example?

Progress does not continue endlessly, but I don’t see it stopping in the foreseeable future.

What seems to be driving the information age is simply ideas. Thousands of years ago people started coming up with ideas. Others learned of those ideas and expanded on them. Now all of these ideas have piled up into what we have today.

Every time an idea gets out into the population it takes a life of its own. With millions of minds taking these ideas and expanding on them, we end up with faster and faster advancement.

Competition is a very important aspect of technological advancement, but necessity is more important. WWII causes an upsurge in technological advancement just because of necessity. The reason alternative energy sources are not advancing very quickly is because there is not much necessity. If we were to suddenly see a major drop in available oil, cars would become extremely fuel efficient, and start running on something else.

I still am amazed at what I have available to me though the internet. Anything I want to know is available in seconds. Rarely am I unable to find what I am looking for. People too often don’t know how powerful that is.

I believe that the advancement from 1900 to 2000 will be matched if not exceeded by the advancements from 2000 to 2100.

Oh yeah. Right now people are working with telomeres. This might just be an advancement in aging research. Apparently cells can only divide a limited number of times, but an enzyme called telomerase rebuilds, or prevents the degradation of these telomeres. Cells can tell how old they are by how many telomeres it has. Each time a cell divides it loses a telomere, and once it loses all of them, it quits dividing, and actually starts producing toxins that help break down the body.

This might just be the most important research into aging, and it’s prevention.

I for one cannot wait to see what advances are made over the next decade. Not to mention what supplements Biotest will have available.

AC: I need to add those books to the growing list of books I need to read. I don’t think I’ll ever get to the end of that list.

Agriculture started everything. Once humans had time to sit around and think, instead of just surviving, innovation took off.

Now just think what we could accomplish if the entire world was up to speed with the US, West Europe, Japan etc.

Alexander Graham Bell beat Elisha Gray to the patent office with the telephone by a matter of hours (or so the story goes). I think that illustrates that if one particular person never invented what he/she did, someone else eventually would have.

What’s worrisome to me is the weapons technology. As they become smaller, more powerful and cheaper to make, and as long as we have terrorists/religious fanatics running around willing to do anything and everything to make other nations suffer, I believe the future could be very grim. I hate to think like that, but one thing is very clear: our technological feats are greatly outpacing the general level of intelligence of the average human being; in other words, we may not be mature enough to use what we’ve already got.

And The Mage said “I believe that the advancement from 1900 to 2000 will be matched if not exceeded by the advancements from 2000 to 2100.”

I think we’ll exceed all of the technological advancements of the prior century within the next decade or two, if not sooner. I’ve read before that the achievements made in the present decade surpass those of all prior decades combined.

It was a piece of ass. Once a guy figured cash got girls. They tried hard to invent stuff. That or it could have been aliens.

I have no doubt that we will exceed the last century in the next 20 years. As I said before it’s geometric. We are at a stage of enormus growth…and potential growth. We just have to stop destroying ourselves.

Tyler: Weapons technology…how about man made viruses. Not to mention if someone has nanotech viruses. Arrrrrrrrhh. :frowning:

Renegade Dragon: I know the feeling with the books. I have boxes of books. I’ve read alot of them but still have more to go. If you want any info on the books I’ve mentioned pm me. That author has 3 books out on the subject. Ciao.

I think most of our major advances have come since irondoc was alive.

Hmmm…
