So…I have a question: the new casino opening up in Atlantic City announced today that they are going to have “term limits” on positions with high guest contact (Cocktail servers, bartenders, dealers, bellhops, promotions workers, valets and front desk hosts) which would be 4-6 years. After which employees will have to reapply for their jobs AND compete with new applicants. The local union says this is “age discrimination”. What do you all think?
Interesting. Are you 3rd party contracted employees? Or actually employees of the Casino?
Actual casino employees. The casino doesn’t open until May 2012. Their explanation is that they want to bring sophistication to Atlantic City and they want to keep their staff fresh and new and current and hip…blah blah blah…
The best news is…they’re offering floor supervisors $180/day (that’s how salaries are calculated)…which averages out to $22.50/hour…which is less than our dual rates (people who deal some times, and supervise sometimes, depending on business needs) make. Shit…it’s less than I make some times…

They would have to terminate you all and that would be termination without cause.
Unless you actually sign a contract agreeing to this you would probably have a discrimination claim.
I think tenure should be abolished.
there, I said it.

Yeah, I think they would almost have to have a contract each employee signs when they accept a job. But is it right? Making employees have to fight for their jobs every 4-6 years? We ask civil servants to do it but that’s for a reason, they have influence over our lives and laws. These are just casino workers. You would have almost no job security. Not that a lot of people do now, but the principle is what matters, right?

IMO, it sounds like their INTENT is to discriminate based on age… but the way it’s worded they could probably make a legal case they just want to make sure people aren’t getting complacent and are maintaining a high level of service (not unlike getting a driver’s license renewed).
I have zero legal experience, but my guess is they are trying to find a legal way to kick out employees who get too old.

I’m guessing they would have to agree to this when they take the job, right? It’s not a rule you can make up after the fact I would think.

Whoa buddy, you take that back. I want to get tenure then do whatever research I want. Without tenure, what I do is all politically seated.

Yeah, but they haven’t even opened yet. Do they really need to worry about this now?
