Ever Feel Like a Thread Killer?

But what happens in a class? Is it like a sampler platter of disciplines? Round robin lottery of what you’ll learn that session?

I don’t know and that’s the whole point of the adventure. Combat sports doesn’t seem to have a beginner’s thread, ugh.

Sounds scary.

Oh, thanks.

Well, not scary like “hurting yourself” scary…more like scary due to being disorganized.

And I fear disorganization.

In our classes, I learned quickly to make sure you tap the opponent when you are submitted, not the mat, and not yourself. Sounds silly but when you are bent into a pretzel…

The other is to not offer a hand of assistance to an able-bodied opponent on the mat after the session.

There are others, but as long as you are respectful and do as others do you should be fine.

Don’t feed your opponents after midnight.

Don’t get them wet.

Bright light hurts them.

But what if they’re bulking?

I meant to say each training centers have their own methods/procedures, some are formal, some are informal. And you should just try and watch others who have been there before.

Oh but having good hygiene is universal. And learning to tie your belt correctly goes a long way. And also if you have a gi make sure it is tied correctly as well. Our master lets us have gi pants and t-shirt.

And unless you are exceptionally gifted, you will feel lost for some time. I will tell you not to worry about it, but you probably will. Just have fun.

So, all my kidding aside, is a MMA class really a single type of training - as in, you train in a ‘hybrid’ form of martial art known as MMA? (See my goofy question above to get a feel for my misunderstanding).

As I said, I’ve watched UFC since the days of Ken Shamrock and Royce Gracie, but I guess my question was - WTF goes on in a ‘class’? I mean, if you’re telling me there’s someplace I can legally go and punch someone in the back of the head 'til they tap out, all I have to say is:

  1. The Paul-shaped hole in the wall was me.
  2. Where’ my tape?

I was looking for one of John Redcorn from king of the hill, but didn’t immediately find one so I gave up.

Well, you’re so mysterious, I was trying to do a little sleuthing and see if you were:

  1. Native American
  2. The product of a relationship between a southern woman and her native american neighbor (and that would make you a boy, too, sticking with the King of the Hill storyline).
