Doing enough forearm work so they don’t become the weak link, slow negatives with heavy curls. That’s all I got. They’re just like any other body part; you’ve got to make them do the work and not the flexion of your joints or supportive muscles. Also stretching after work sets.
Then bulk to 260 and you’re set ![]()
What do you weigh MD?
240-245 right now, but I’ll be doing more cardio to get rid of some of the ballast before the Sun Run (I figure a 10k run every decade or so isn’t going overboard)
by ‘Heavy’ how are you picking your reps & volume? (any recommendations from others posters who’ve gone from bicep mesas to bicep peaks is always welcome)
No rush on answering, My dog’s gotta go fo’ another walk.
After warmups I usually pick a weight I can do for about 8-10 then I do three sets with short rests to failure. Slow negatives, I sometimes go lower rep with preachers. The I do one set of compound forearm work like hammer curls, reverse curls, reverse preacher, pinwheels ect for higher reps. Wrist curls r ghey. Then I stretch.
So it’d be like:
BB curl
warmup then
90x10
90x7
90x4
Reverse BB curl
40x16
Nothing special. If I stop progressing on a movement while everything else is going up I dump it for something similar.
Another thing to think about would be switching your back movements to ones that emphasize biceps more like underhand pullups/pulldowns so they get extra stimulation on other days if they’re really lagging.
My forearms & grip are doing fairly okay. (I think it’s probably from doing Kettlebell stuff, it’s like a fatbar sized grip & I’m moving fairly ballistically ← if that’s a word.
as far as the extent of my suckitude goes, ANY time I can use an underhand grip on rows or chins, etc, I do… and still I’m unworthy to post in any of the arm threads on this site. ![]()
What frequency are you lifting - DC style setup or what?
Yeah I’d never had any grip problems either I just do the direct work for size. Also I think the mechanism of the forearm working on a curl is different from gripping rows and deads and direct work adresses that. No I’m not doing DC, from what I’ve read it seems like something someone very developed would use, and I’m still progressing with an upper/lower split 2x a week. I’ve recently been incorperating their stretches though which I think are great. Not sure if they actually do anything to make me bigger but I need the flexibility and this forces me to stretch every session. Also the way they set up leg days I like to; doing calves and hamstring before quads.
What do you use kettlebells for? I’ve never seen one in person, but I know what they are ![]()
Edit: No rush, I’m going to bed.

Toots: I’m a little surprised that was your first time in an adult store… What took you so long to check it out? I’m like a kid in a candy store at those places.
What do you grab the double enders and yell out, “I will take them all?!?!” LOL. Now that my daughter is ditching me all the time, I feel like I can have that stuff in the house.
I got the boot from an angry cat and that’s why I’m up in the middle of the night. I was tired of it attacking my feet and my bed is way more comfy so peace out sucker! (:

re KBs: ^ it depends who you ask. Some fans say cure for cancer, world peace, girls gone wild, etc.
As a bit more of a realist, the basics are:
Swings = A lot like driving off the line in footall or cable pull-throughs, without having a cable interfere with the johnson. For me the ‘effects’ are in hip-snap, grip, & keeping an appropriately stable back & rear delts. It comes with a reasonable level of cardiovascular benefit.
Clean + presses/jerks/whatever = similar to the DB version, but done for higher reps.
Snatches = My personal favorite. They have an insane cardiovascular effect if you’re working heavy enough (I’ve got a 53 pounder, but because of the handle size, plus having the weight offset, it feels like a 70-75 lb DB. I’m not kidding about the cardio though.
there’s like 50 other exercises, but most of them are variants on BB/DB lifts.
Thanks for all the bb’ing speak…I’m still trying to figure it all out…
Any of you plan on competing one day?

Yes

Nope. Me and the scale are bitter rivals and I will never bow down. If I had to pick one, I would do a powerlifting meet but it will probably wouldn’t happen for a long time.
I have no interest in the politics, makeup, etc. in bb and figure. Oh, and the diet too! I like dirty grungy beer drinking sports!
I put my prowler together today - finally! I can even get it into the backseat of my car. I was going to take it out for a spin today but that was vetoed. ![]()
So we are pretty sure my weakness is lower back and hamstrings. I do good mornings, ghrs, rdls, etc for higher reps. Tips and tricks?

Ehhh. I don’t know.
I know what I want to look like, and competing wouldn’t be too much more intense, but alas…
It depends on quite a few factors, but I’m nt sure.
I’m more worried about turning heads with cloths on, then with a thong on at this point.
^ haha, I like the way you put that Beans…basically, my sentiments exactly…but I would always wonder what it would be like…it’s the last thing I can picture myself doing…training for, sure! But actually getting on that stage, eek…and it’s a contest based on how my body looks? wasn’t that what highschool was about? haha…
My goals in life are to be strong and to LOOK like I work hard for it…
PMPM- what about your core? I know you do a lot of planks and what not, but are you training abs as much as lower back?
And I know you are Ct… ![]()
I keep going back and forth between what I want…

wider stance on your hamstring moves
point your toes out
flex your glutes
why higher reps? if its a weak point make it stronger with lower reps, no?
also, sprinting will put some extra pop in your gluteal/ham are

Go heavier for lower reps? Do SLDL and focus on getting your his through.
Granted I did a shit load of pulling from the floor, but my hammies, glutes and erectors are not the weakest link anymore. And I pretty much pulled in the 85-100% range for about a year straight. I’m totally burnt out on the lift now, and am not planning on touching it until April 15th, but I could pretty much pull 405-455 any day of the week for at least a single.
You need to use the sled and let me know if it is worth it… I’m thinking about tying one. But then again, it needs to be worth the logistical pain in my ass.

Also, I understand that you are well past the stage were you can operate in that intensity range like that. I really was still in beginner stages and sacrificed other lifts for the dead.

If I can look like this (plus a % of BF) before I’m 50, I’ll compete
