it means friend or family member
as in pack of dogs or wolves.
“road dogs” live off the land and completely depend on each other for life. Calling someone “dog” is just symbolic of that.
I’ve always gotten “big dog” in sports, where I’m usually team captain (alpha dog) of wrestling or football teams (pack).
whether its gang life,sport related, or just a few people who are really close “dog” just means friend. On that note, I always understood it as a loyalty tag reserved for the purpose of friendship. I’ll never understand how its being thrown around so loosely now. I’m crazy young but I remember working hard to be respected enough to really be considered someone’s “road dog”.
