Well then go barehanded until you can’t and use straps, and use a bucket of rice. Both/and. Trust me, you can’t have strong enough hands doesn’t matter if you’re doing physique orientated training.
Plus, weak hands equal small forearms.
I disagree with BC on rice. I’ve only seen it used as a rehab tool, for marginally increasing grip strength. I’ve used it a few times myself and don’t feel that the incremental increase in strength is great enough to make a difference when pulling some major weight (major is relative, but it still matters).
You should check out Fat Gripz (a lot of people love them) for pulling movements. They wrap around standard olympic bars and I believe most DB handles.
Also, you could pinch together two 10 lb plates per hand and walk around (even doing walking lunges), just make sure the flat sides of the plates are facing out, so your fingers can’t take advantage of the “lip” on most plates (if your plates are the ones with a lip on just one side). Make sure the plates are just pinched at your fingertips. Graduate up to 25 lb plates and work your way up if possible.
If chalk is frowned upon at your gym (it is at most gyms), try ordering liquid chalk. It’s clear.
Summary:
- Fat Gripz for all pulling exercises
- Pinching plates + walking lunges (or just walk around if it’s really heavy; try something like 3 min at a time, then go up to 4 then 5 mins)
- Liquid, clear chalk
Oh, and we were talking about “different moves”:

I guess in some places that’s called the “anterior reach”…
Well in all my years of boxing, pitching, discus & shot put, and lifting weights. From Professional coaches to Westside Barbell I have heard and been told personally about using rice to strengthen your hands. Not saying there isn’t other ways to strengthen the hand, but it’s one of the best ways to strengthen the hand dynamically verse statically with plate pinches and just getting stronger through dead lifting.
