So what will be your job?!?!? Congrats!
I will be dealing baccarat at the exorbitant wage of $4.25/hr plus tips. But my training will be paid at $7.25/hr. Training is 4 weeks long, Mon-Thurs, for 5 hours a day. The PA Gaming Board guy asked if I had further questions and I asked him how long would it take to know if I got the job and he was like “the decision will be made today. In fact, I’d like to offer you a position in the baccarat school which starts Nov. 15.” Pretty sure there were tons of other questions I should have asked, but I was just floored that I was offered a job on the spot I was like “sure, um, okay.”

I’m just glad I have a job that corresponds with my degree. Once I’m in the casino environment, I can go anywhere. I see this as getting my foot in the door.

Bummer. I get fingerprinted and stuff on the 12th. I wonder if they’ll use the traditional fingerprint ink or the really cool digital pads that transfer your prints straight to the computer? When I got my DUI I was bummed they used the digital pads…I was really looking forward to having fingerprint ink on my fingers.

Greenie…

I got a Hotel/Tip question(s).

At what point/how much do you tip the following:

 1. Valet

 2. Bellman

 3. Maid

I always feel like I give too much, or not enough.

Little help with this?

Kthx!
Well, I would say a minimum of $2 for bellmen, but more if you have tons of luggage. Valet? $2-3. Maid? Depends on how long you were there, and if you got service every day. Lots of hotels don’t do full service the second day if you are there for more than one night. Hotels are going “green” and as part of that have a policy that if you want your towels replaced, put them on the floor, if not, hang them up and they won’t be replaced.
Really, I saw this back in 95 at a Hotel in Prescott. Hmm…
Well, it’s more prevalent now. The big chains are using it as a “see? we care about the environment too” kind of thing.

What savings account? I won’t have anything left over for savings…

And I’m pretty sure since the “tips” part of my salary is a portion of the pooled tips of 3 shifts, I’ll have to claim 100% of them too…dammit.

I was referring to Hungry’s savings account. Now that your guys are a two income family, things should be smoother.

Well, I don’t know if I would be getting cash tips…like a server would. Most times you get tipped it’s with chips and you have to put them in a box. I don’t know how they’re given out, if they’re added to your paycheck automatically or what. I know how it works with bartenders, you just split the jar at the end of the night. But this is over 3 shifts. I don’t know how that works.

This is true. Though we will have a second car since I can’t get there by public transit. But it will be better than it has been.

No you just turn in your chips at the end of your shift, then exchange the chips for cash.

I have a friend whose husband retired as a police officer and they moved to Vegas. She’s in her 40s, really fun and was looking for another legal assistant job. I told her she was insane. She should have taken a job in one of the casinos because I guarantee she would make a boatload of money with her tips. A guy who did nothing but move luggage in and out of holding at the casino where I stayed in Vegas told me he made 6 figures. Easy to believe. When I left for the airport I gave him $5 to get my one piece of luggage out of the holding room. It took him ONE minute. Figure most people have multiple pieces of luggage and the room I had was $189 and it was not a top tier room so there were people staying there who make serious bank.

Anyway…Greeny…getting a foot in the door and getting to know the place, how it’s run, the managers…you’ll have your dream job before you know it. I think people who work their way up have a better grasp on how a place runs than those who waltz in off the street.

I’m SO excited for you.

How would you know? You’re still in Junior High. Well, it depends on what casino you work for, some have tip boxes, some allow you to keep your tips in your pocket and cash them out at night.

Yeah, the Gaming Board guy said that it’s a portion of the tips pooled from all 3 shifts. I just don’t know how they’re distributed.
