Okay so you have some college, not trying to bust your balls, but this is a life decision. If and when you fail in the big apple are you going to be able to come back home with your head up? Or your tail between your legs? I am saying this because your plan is not well thought out, and people with plans like this fail.

How bout this Im fucking tired of NYC, been here all my life Ill trade you me for him, whatddya say?

I have a spare room and a power cage.

.

I’ve lived in New York and I was born there. What you need to do is a COST OF LIVING report of expenses. Keep a log of everything you spend or have to spend money on for ONE MONTH.

After the month is over, add everything up and that is your cost of living for a month. Multiply that by 12 and then double it and you’ll know how much money you should bring to NY. What you need to also do is find out what the cost of living is in Manhattan. You can find that out online.

Don’t go there unprepared bro.

http://www.costofliving.net/index.cfm?fuseaction=BrowseCOL.New-York-Manhattan-New-York-cost-of-living-data-details&CityId=159

According to this the cost of living in Manhattan by average is $50,000 dollars. (or potentially more)

Is your goal simply to survive, or do you want to live?

Even if you find employment shortly after moving do you really want to move somewhere only to live paycheque to paycheque?

Hardly seems like a fair trade for NYC.

Lets make it a 3 way. Matt and I go to CO. Stengh goes to Boston, and NYC get to continue to ass rape it’s residence with outlandish tax rates.

Boston is cheaper living. Shitty city all told, but cheaper living.

Incorporating a third party to make the deal go through, your right that makes it fair, you aint kidding about nyc tax rates…my asshole is throbbing. I need some good clean livin in CO!

I don’t understand why anyone would want to play for a NY team, unless it’s baseball and they want to win. You could make 10-12% LESS base salary and still take home more playing for another team.

Anyone that thought Lebron was going to the Knicks was dumb. If you did the math, he would have paid some outlandish amount in tax and effectively made less money.

Wait- why are you coming to NYC? What’s the purpose?

I mean, while it’s going to be very fucking difficult, it is feasible to find an apartment in BK and work your balls off at some restuarant or some shit and survive… but most people don’t do this by choice- they end up there.

If you’re not going to school, or planning on school, or looking to get a job that you can only get here, like working for NBC or some shit, why are you coming?

If you’re trying to do the “life experience” thing, I can tell you living in a roach infested apartment in the outer boroughs while trying to save enough money to get drunk one night in a month is going to be pretty f’n miserable.

Bedbugs, too. I read that those are on the rise in roach-infested apartments in the outer boroughs.

Hyserical. I live in Bayside, and have no problems, nor am I starving to death. Nor are any of my peers in the outer boroughs and Manhattan.

Hysterical as in funny, or hysterical as in overreactive?

But at any rate, according to the NYC Dept. of Health and Mental Hygiene (http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/vector/vector-faq1.shtml) bed bug infestations are on the rise in New York City. WPIX states: “Bed Bugs Cases Explode To Epidemic Scale In NYC!” Etc. I saw it mentioned on CNN.

But hey, I’m glad you and your friends aren’t bothered. I hear they suck.

Epidemic? Well that would be overreactive.

Unless they’re at your house, bein’ all tough to eradicate and shit.

Sorry, I was confused whether you were going there short term or long term? You mentioned “move out of Colorado” and “one way flight” and then mention “running out of money” which leads me to believe you need some form of job to sustain your stay there. Could you elaborate?
Long Term. I don’t have any job prospects so there in lies the risk. I was planning on saving at least 10k but from what a current poster is saying,I should aim for 40,000?
Why don’t you consider a less expensive city? On the East Coast or at least closer to where you want to be.

I guess a lot of this is going to be determined by the line of work you’re in. If it’s not a professional job or a vocation that pays by the hour (i.e. tradesman, tutor, medicine, law etc) then I would hold of on moving till you improved your credentials.

Saving more money helps you live longer there but it’s still money going out. Improving yourself, earning more is what you want to do more of. I still think you should find a job before you move out.

I still wouldn’t give up on your dream of living and working in NY but you have to be practical about it. Shitty apartments, rough neighborhoods, living hand to mouth are all part of moving out of home, but it won’t be like that forever and hopefully it will build some character in you as well. You’ll probably look back on this one day and tell your kids I’m glad I made the move - I hope you do.

Now that I think about it - if you can save 40,000 - you should invest in a home where you live or at least in a city that you know. Owning a home before 24 will set you up for a lot more than living in an expensive city and losing money every month in “expenses < income”.

I suggest living in Bayside or Astoria or Long Island City, Queens; or Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Not a rip off like Manhattan, still are actual neighborhoods, and LOADS of women and things to do.
