Emigrating to Canada

Has anyone done it ?? I would love to relocate permanently to Vancouver or Victoria BC in the next couple of years, any advice would be appreciated.

Why?

I grew up on Vancouver Island and I’d go back in a heartbeat. The lifestyle is laid back, there is total access to beaches and mountains, great fishing and boating areas, skiing (Mt.Washington is un-fucking-believable) and beautiful scenery. On the down side, it rains ALOT and you’d best have a job before you move there. Victoria is OK, I prefer Vancouver myself.

Up island (north of Victoria) is pretty small town. There are some “cities” but it can be kinda boring. Everyone knows everyone, who slept with who, that kind of shit. At 19, I moved to Vancouver just to get away from all that. My parents still live there (about 2 hours north of Victoria) and I stand to inherit a nice chunk of real estate one day. Then I’ll go back, buy some goats, start a pottery business and grow weed. And put a squat rack in the barn.

Aren’t Canadians communist?

check out the immigration canada website…everything you need to know is on there. As dianab point out, it rains a ton in Vancouver and the surrounding areas, but if you like outdoor stuff, it’s one of the best places around.

If you are in the trades British Columbia would love to have you. There’s a major boom happening right now with no end in sight. They are starving for workers. I live in Victoria and nothing short of it dropping into the ocean will ever get me off this rock.

Winters are wet but short, snow pretty much shuts the city down. Spring starts in March and summer ends in October. Vancouver gets two to three time the rain fall, but if you love to ski it’s the place to live. There is skiing on the Island it’s just not Whistler or Blackcomb.

Thanks for the advice. I live in OR now and it is pretty small compared to Vancouver. The weather sucks in both places but one doesnot need a shovel like my hometown Boston.

The weather is influencing my next car choice though as a Vette is not built for this kind of weather.

To Dianab are you from Sydney, when I first went to the island I came thru Anacortes and that is where I landed.

No, not from Sydney, that’s a suburb of Victoria (or maybe more of it’s own city). I grew up in Nanaimo, which is 2 hours north of Victoria. Don’t move there!!!
Not needing a shovel is a big asset. I live in Montreal now and I’ll never get used to these winters.

Streamline, it’s true that island skiing is no Whistler but have you skiied Washington? The terrain is amazing, and it’s not nearly as commercial as Whistler/Blackcomb. I lived in North Vancouver for 5 years and skiied WB almost every weekend, and the local mountains at night. Just one more thing to miss about the west coast…

Hillary won?!!?!?

BC’s freedom compared to USA, my familys all american and they say its great here, people smoke anything they want pretty much wherever they please, its not as patriotic here in canada though, thats one thing i wish canada had more of.PATRIOTISM.

I think that Canadians are very patriotic, we just go about it in a quieter way. There is not a lot of “parades down main street”, if you know what I mean, but I would defend my country to the death. Most people I know feel this way, we just don’t really advertise it.

When I ski it’s Mt.Washington. I was serious, I don’t leave this Island unless forced to, which my boss does every now and then “I don’t like him”.

Lawl, then sign me up for the move.

We can start a T-batchelor pad where we just train and eat and do some piddly work to pay for the pizza, chicken, and beer. And import taxes on Metabolic Drive of course.

Canada? WTF is that.

Good for you! When I go back, it’s for good. I’d actually love to get a place on one of the Gulf Islands and become a hippie. But it’ll be in Qualicum Beach, that’s where the family property is.
Your lucky to be living there.
