This frank admission goes to the heart of what is wrong with today’s news. We need television news that doesn’t represent one section of the elite or another, but reports with ordinary people’s interests in mind.

thats up to does who makes the news, but yes would be fine if more newspapers and newschannels
reflected the interrests of the average guy instead of some political elite or some economical elite.
yes those usually include by large majority - Whats in the fridge, who’s on Call Of Duty right now, and genecide of all Muslims, Blacks and Jews for no reason. We’re all tyrants, just some individuals get to impose their will and most don’t.

They report on J-LO, and Micheal Jacksons funeral and Paris Hilton and so on.
The things that you think they should be interested in are of no interest to them and a company that reported them would go broke.
It is not the media, or the “elites” or the church, or the evil companies that are to blame, no, most people lack the intellectual capacity or the will to learn something new and no amount of top down tinkering will ever change that.

This is mis-directed. Do people waste time on the absurd and mundane? Yes, however if the real issues of the day were front and center and being discussed in an open and unbiased way the world would be a much different place. The purpose of the mass media, which after all is a large corporation, is to maximize profits at just about any expense. They bombard the masses with the unimportant so as to marginalize them and keep them out of the real discussion. The mass media is biased to those who own it. It is their interests that it serves not the people of the United States.
I just thought it interesting that George Will admitted this on national TV.

It could not possibly be that most people are shallow and ignorant and wish to remain so?
So what is the elite?
If your definition is just about a minority that effectivly enjoys some kind of rulership, then it’s only logical that these guys will have less time to read (newspapers) or watch (TV) as they are busy, well, ruling around.
And how should not some kind of minority be in charge?
Even if it would be a superflat hierarchy with a superjust direct voting system (shudder), who would be the one to pose the propositions?
So, this definition of “elite” is pointless.
And who really wants a superflat, root-like democracy? I mean, who among the sane?
For the record: the media caters both to special interest and the vulgar masses. While the latter receives the bulk of the showtime, the important headlines etc. are created as per decree of an “elite”.
Just think of the elite as being the naturally talented individuals whom bring a superlative quality to the market that consumers demand.

I agree more with Orion’s comment than your opinion. Most do not care for politics and world-events. They will change the channel if the news comes on, unless that news is weather, for some reason.
I also want to point out that Mass Media is in fact SEVERAL large corporations, often with competing editorial positions, whose primary motivation is not money.
I don’t know what the news corportations are battling for, but if it was profitability, CNN would look a lot more like Fox.
The larger and more complex the institution, the need for the Elite rises.
