Element_26's Powerlifting Adventure

thats what puts me off kit…esp multi-ply!!

I think the fact that the shirt was loose allowed it to move about a bit on the arms, hence the bruising. I was playing with it before using it for a working set and managed to touch 60kg to my chest, which gives an indication of just how loose it was.

And thanks for the advice on peaking for a meet. I feel that pulling a projected 2nd attempt tomorrow on my deadlift day won’t hurt, as I pulled light two weeks ago and did a heavy double last week. I’ll still have 12 days to recover before the meet - what do you think?

Adam - that was a loose single ply shirt! My Ace (tight multiply) never leaves me badly marked up.

hhaha you’re just swole!

rather you than me…for now anyway!

Feeling good for the meet?

Got your openers planned?

Yeah man, I’m feeling good thanks; really looking forward to the meet now. I’m going to open at 260/170/230, and have some numbers in mind for what I’d like to hit on the day.

how did the meet go mate???

vids?! PRs??

Well, well, well - turns out the ‘fuck it, it’ll be alright on the night’ approach to meet preparation works absolutely fine! After next to no planning of a training cycle, I’m delighted to come away with an 80kg PR total and a performance I can be pleased with.

The day started with me weighing in at 107.3kg, which surprised me as my bathroom scales had me weighing in at 111kg. I knew from previous experience that they weigh me a little heavy, but I was not expecting to be that light. I know my weight was actually down ever so slightly from where it’s been for most of the training cycle, so maybe that helped my very, very tight gear fit a little better later in the day.

Anyway, onto the squats. Opened with a comp PR (although my 250kg effort last year was done in briefs only). Warm-ups were fine, felt good. First attempt took an age to get down to depth, but flew up once I finally got the call from my coach. Even so, I got one red for depth. Second attempt was high. It was my fault, I got a bit freaked out close to the bottom of the lift and shot up early. I initially said I’d take 280 again, but another lifter commented that I obviously had more weight in me, and taking a heavier weight might help me hit depth a little more comfortably. It was a good call - I took 290 and got it. 300kg (which would have been fantastic) would probably have been beyond me, so I’m very, very happy with the 290kg.

Bench warm-ups were also good. I had a couple of more experienced geared benchers helping me out backstage, which was brilliant as all my training partners are raw lifters and aren’t always able to give me that insight into the mystic art of shirted benching as experienced equipped lifters are able to. I had selected 170 as my opener for one reason: it was the only weight I knew I could do. I can’t touch anything less in this shirt at my current bodyweight, and hadn’t been able to press anything heavier off the chest. My opener was absolutely perfect; set-up was great, bar path was great, speed was great. Didn’t really know what to do next, so just took 180. Again, set up and execution felt bang on, although the press was a little slower. Bumped it up another 10kg for the third, and got that too. I felt absolutely brilliant at this point - I was honestly expecting to take all three attempts just to get 170 in.

Finally, the deadlifts. 230 first - looked like a speed pull. 250 was up next, but my left foot slipped on the platform as I broke the bar off the floor. Must have had some talc on the platform. I reset, and pulled again with toes pointed in a little more and a very slightly narrower stance. Almost got it to lockout, but I knew I didn’t have it and dropped it. I took it again and this time had no problems. Very slight hint of a hitch at lockout which I think I got one red for, but I was happy to hit a good PR here as well.

I finished 2nd in the 110kg class - got beaten by a strongman who finished with a mighty impressive 322.5kg (shade over 700lb) pull! Had a great day, met some great people, and am already looking forward to the next meet. Smashing the 300kg squat and 200kg bench barriers are the next goals!

Video from yesterday:

Great performance!! My best equipped training cycle was of the ‘oh fuck it’ variety. Maybe you should trademark the term and start a website for it, lol.

Element_26 brings you the, ‘Just roll with it man, it’ll all be good on the day’ training system. Works 31% of the time, every time.

niiiiiiiiiiiiice lifting, i looked at the online results and thought you’d come second by the look of the numbers!!

massive performance, set the bar far too high for me now mothertrucker!!

Hahaha cheers man. There were some fantastic performances yesterday - it turned out to be a great meet actually. And we’ll see where we are when I start training raw again; I doubt there will be much separating the two of us!
