I would argue oligopolies are harder to avoid. Politicians, at least are up for re-election every few years. Are the people who are getting constantly fucked over by corporations get a chance to decide who will lead that business?

Umm, the US placed an embargo on Cuba for decades - effectively leaving the country to it’s own devices…
And guess what? The Cuban people hated it so much they built homemade rafts to try and float 80 miles to US soil. Sounds like it was working great.

In your democratic society why would anyone have the desire to push society forward if there is no benefit? If I just want to survive, I can do so in a tent with few acres of good hunting/farming land and I would never have to deal with anyone else - sounds good to me.
