I’ve been doing so much better. Still not where I want to be…but who is? I am a lot better than last year, joined a bunch of organizations at school, and I’m doing some volunteer work.
Thanks for asking though you’ve helped me a lot man I really appreciate it. It’s really easy for people to just run away from something like this. You definitely seemed to understand real well where I was coming from so thanks.

I like this and the video shows a lot of my old friends playing: PSP World Cup 2011 cHampionship - YouTube

Anyone in the DC area?

Check out Au5 (my son) and Fractal tonight at Bass Nation Throwdown!

Your son is very very good. Personally, I think he could use just a touch of restraint on the complexity… but the skill is clearly there. Looking forward to seeing where he goes with it, assuming he keeps it up; i.e., assuming he can figure out how to live off of it.

I’d never listened to dubstep before this thread.

I tried all of the videos that were still up…I doubt I’ll listen to it ever again :frowning: Ya’ll have fun with that stuff but YUCK.

Just yesterday he was informed he will be signing on with Skrillex’s label. A tour is in the works!

Some critics have written that he’s raised the bar for the genre.

You knew of Au5? I know he has a fanbase, but I wasn’t sure how widespread!

That’s awesome. Congrats.

(And now I feel somewhat guilty for giving up music to pursue a ‘real’ job. I think I’ll have to get back into it.)

LOL @ “real job”!

When I look back over then last 10 years and how much time and effort he put into making music instead of partying or socializing, it makes sense he would eventually succeed. Also, the wife and I have been extremely supportive along the way - to the point of not making him do mindless chores or even to get a job! We both knew that his talent needed full attention without any distraction to grow.

He literally stays up all night working on his music to avoid daytime distractions. The 10 years of classical piano training, 4 years of jazz bass training, plus his intense love of science has really turned him into a technical wizard in the EDM genre, and the quality of his compositions, sound design skills, production values, and impeccable ear have definitely raised the bar for the genre.

What instrument do you play, LoRez?

13 years of classical piano. (And marching bands, clarinet/bass-clarinet/alto-clarinet and baritone). Went to school for computer science instead of music though. And, frankly, got a little fed up with the direction classical music has taken since Scriabin/Stravinsky. I.e., I know there’s pretty much no chance of success if I go down that route. I have several years of improvisations recorded that I want to “do something with” someday, but haven’t done anything with them yet.

I’ve got a good keyboard/synth – I bought it for the piano feel/sound, but it does much more than that – and I screw around a bit, but I’ve never really put anything together. Just haven’t put in the time to go down the EDM route. I might start working on that again this year though.

I did spend a few weeks getting a feel for the drum pattern construction (something you don’t get at all with piano), and I learned a lot of harmony from my time spent playing jazz piano and then just messing around on my own.

It’s sort of like I’ve got all the building blocks to actually do something with it, but I’m missing the mortar

You have an impressive background. Didn’t expect that!

Yes, please do yourself a favor and get back into it. Even just for fun.

Have you tried any of the apps that the EDM guys use? My son uses Logic Pro.

[quote]Iron Dwarf wrote:

I used Cakewalk back in the day (pre-Sonar). The workflow never clicked with me, at least back then.

I messed around with Renoise a year or so ago. It’s actually a pretty powerful tool, especially for doing very detailed work… e.g., if you’re building drum patterns, and want to be able to actually tweak effects on a per drum sample level, it works awesomely… and for glitch effects, you can do stuff with it that I don’t actually think you can do with any other tool. Wasn’t a great tool (imo) for song construction though.

A DJ friend of mine has been pushing me to try Ableton. I’ve also heard plenty of good things about Logic, but I don’t have a Mac. I probably just need to just spend some time messing around with Sonar, Cubase, Pro Tools, Ableton, Reason, etc. and pick something I get along with.

What does he use for his monitor speakers? I need to get a good pair of those.

Yeah, Ableton and Pro Tools are pretty standard in the genre (so I’m told).

He uses KRK Rockit 6 speakers (not the best), but does most of his mixing in top-of-the-line headphones!

[quote]Iron Dwarf wrote:

So, like what?

I’m leaning toward picking up a pair of these (Reference ONE On-Ear Stereo Headphones | Klipsch) but that’s as much because 1) I dated one of the acoustic engineers who designed them [lol] 2) Klipsh is local, and I’m ok with supporting local business, 3) Klipsch actually does know a thing or two about audio.

But then everyone seems to say you really should do your mixing on a pair of good monitors.

I get confused when it comes to hardware. The keyboard/synth? Easy choice. The digital audio box? Easy decision. Speakers for home listening use? Pretty easy decision. Speakers and microphones for studio use? Completely lost.

Hey LoRez, my son’s in DC right now, but when he comes home, I’ll ask him to make a list of ALL his hardware, then I’ll post it here for ya.

I agree most will tell you that mixing and mastering should be done in a good room with good monitors. My son agrees as well. But he has an exceptionally good ear (also has perfect pitch), and never gets sound-drunk. I think this is how he can manage to produce pristine compositions on a sub-par set of speakers. I’m sure hell soon have top of the line everything.

That’s one of the big things I noticed with his stuff is that it sounds very “clean”. It’s interesting to hear you say that his ear has contributed to that. Lots of people don’t consider digital musicians to have any actual musical affinity!

Has he always had “perfect pitch”? I’ve only ever met one person who just had it, but I have met a few who spent many years training for it and eventually reached a level most would consider synonymous with perfect pitch. I view perfect pitch as more of a sliding scale than as an on/off switch.
