Dramatic Performance on Film?

Here’s some other favorites:

Kurt Russell in “Miracle” was great as Herb Brooks. He had the look, the attitude, everything. Very solid.

Maybe its because I love early John Carpenter movies, but I firmly believe that every movie (particularly action movies) could be made better by an appearance by Kurt Russell. In fact, I think the most perfect movie might just be a remake of “The Thing” with Russell now playing ALL the parts (I’m only half kidding).

They could EASILY make a sequel to that movie today and jump in right where they left off. I bought it on DVD last year and I am still amazed at the creature effects for it. They were way ahead of their time with both the feel of the movie and the effects. It almost makes me wonder if it happened by accident or if they really planned it that well.

This doesn’t apply to the subject, but I thought I’d pass this on:

Last night, AMC replayed the old “Batman” movie with Adam West, Burt Ward and the whole cast of bad guys (although Julie Newmar didn’t reprise her Catwoman role).

Anyway, last time I saw this movie I was very young, but remember being disappointed in it. I watched it this morning and come to find out, I missed out on a classic! Seriously, this movie is great, as it’s basically a spoof of the TV show. West has some great one-liners in there and the tone of his voice is hilarious, as is Ward using “Holy (fill in the blank) Batman!” for pretty much the entire movie.

I need to buy the DVD of this immediately.

I know the movie was made shortly after the TV show was cancelled. Does anyone recall why the show was pulled after just 3 seasons? And, will the old shows ever be released on DVD?

Are you talking about Batman 1969? Or 67 or whatever the hell year it was? That flick is awesome.

If you like Adam West you should do a search for a sitcom pilot he did back in the late 80’s or early 90’s. He plays a washed up actor who used to play a detective on TV, and he goes around trying to solve crimes. In my opinion it was his best work and was hilarious. They only made the one episode. It was written by Conan O’Brian, just before he got his show.

Wow, great thread guys. I really want to go back and re-watch some of these movies now.

One that I think hasn’t been mentioned-
Paul Newman in THE HUSTLER

The dialog in that movie is absolutely captivating and Newman gives it such great flare

My favorite quote-[Fast Eddie is bothered because Bert called him a born loser]

Fast Eddie: Cause, ya see, twice, Sarah… once at Ames with Minnesota Fats and then again at Arthur’s, in that cheap, crummy pool room, now why’d I do it, Sarah? Why’d I do it? I coulda beat that guy, coulda beat 'im cold, he never woulda known. But I just hadda show 'im. Just hadda show those creeps and those punks what the game is like when it’s great, when it’s REALLY great.

You know, like anything can be great, anything can be great. I don’t care, BRICKLAYING can be great, if a guy knows. If he knows what he’s doing and why and if he can make it come off. When I’m goin’, I mean, when I’m REALLY goin’ I feel like a… like a jockey must feel.

He’s sittin’ on his horse, he’s got all that speed and that power underneath him… he’s comin’ into the stretch, the pressure’s on ‘im, and he KNOWS… just feels… when to let it go and how much. Cause he’s got everything workin’ for 'im: timing, touch. It’s a great feeling, boy, it’s a real great feeling when you’re right and you KNOW you’re right. It’s like all of a sudden I got oil in my arm.

The pool cue’s part of me. You know, it’s uh - pool cue, it’s got nerves in it. It’s a piece of wood, it’s got nerves in it. Feel the roll of those balls, you don’t have to look, you just KNOW.

You make shots that nobody’s ever made before. I can play that game the way… NOBODY’S ever played it before.
Sarah Packard: You’re not a loser, Eddie, you’re a winner. Some men never get to feel that way about anything.

It isn’t a widely seen movie, but Dead Man’s Shoes (A movie made in the UK by Shane Meadows) is not only one of the best I’ve seen in years, but the actor who plays the lead … Paddy Considine is easily one of the best around.

He was intimidating and convincing as an older brother, returned from the military to find that the local crowd of losers had targeted and abused his mentally slow younger brother. The movie is about his delivery of vengeance.

Over the last few years I’ve seen it several times and it grips me tight.

Paddy Considine is remarkable.

imdb link-

I’ve not seen it, but I saw This is England and by the same director. It blew my socks off. I was most surprised by the performance of Stephen Graham who I’d only seen in Snatch as Jason Statham’s sidekick. Unbelievable performance.

Yup, I haven’t seen This Is England yet, but have been wanting to for awhile now… gonna get it on torrent…along with A Room For Romeo Brass. So far from Shane Meadows I’ve only seen Dead Man’s Shoes and Once Upon A Time In The Midlands.

Just “bumping” as I post a companion thread!

Mufasa

Just to add from the first page of this thread: Lost in Translation was a great film and I didn’t like Broken Flowers.

I think Sam Jackson’s performance in A Time to Kill was very moving. A very good movie…check it out if you haven’t seen it.
