Downloading Music?

Last year I found a page on Lycos where I could search and download songs for free. It doesn’t seem to be there anymore and I want to get some new music for my mp3 player for my workouts. I honestly don’t know much about downloading stuff and when I search the web I’m nervous that all these “free” sites are scams.

Is it still possible to download music for free or did the whole napster thing change that?

Any suggestions for me or sites I should check out? Thanks!

(I feel very old and clueless now…)

Under sharing rights, it’s still technically legal.

You’re not gonna get in trouble for downloading mp3s, trust me.

Try Limewire, as I find it’s the cleanest P2P out there, next to Bittorent.

go to www.download.com and search for “Limewire”. This is a file sharing program. Works well. Have been using it for several years w/o any problems. Great for free porn, too. Oh sorry, you were looking for music.

No, it’s not. It’s never been legal to rip music from a CD and give it to someone else.

There are few exceptions to the rule. Music released directly by the bands (you’ll only see whole albums if it’s an unsigned band or someone trying to make a ‘statement’) and snippets for advertisement purposes are the only things you’ll see on websites.

Never download from a website if you’re interested in ‘padding’ your music collection. There are other ways to go about it while being discreet, and there are ways to avoid detection all together.

SoulSeek

3rd’ing Limewire.

Hey Jilly,

Something else to consider is borrowing CD’s from friends and coworkers and checking out your local library. I got a lot of music this way, plus my gf is severe music hound.
I just rip em to my harddrive and then I can add em to my mp3 with the search function. Just an additional alternative for ya.

Rock on!

Limewire is good, yes.

I would recommend forums though - pretty easy to understand too.

Try some of these:

www.nxsecure.org/forum
www.melonez.org

Registration on these is free, and WELL worth it. Music/Games/Software/eBooks…

I work for the technology services department of my college. We have a constant stream of students whose computers “are running super slow.” The first thing I always check when these kids come in is whether or not they have limewire installed. All of the newest versions of limewire have severe and sometimes crippling amounts of spyware bundled with them. And, to be frank, they simply do not work as well as they used to.

The wave of the music sharing feature is torrents. I get all of my music through sites such as www.mininova.org www.isohunt.org and www.oink.me.uk

Torrents are really the way to go. Go to www.about.com and search for their article on torrenting. They explain it with much greater eloquence than I ever could.

Do NOT download limewire. You will open yourself to a world of computing pain.

I have heard good things about soulseek but have never personally used it.

The easiest, legal, and non-scummy way of doing it is paying for the music. Pay a buck a song from iTunes, or 8 bucks for a CD from BMG.

Along these lines, I have ordered several used CDs on Amazon. The CDs have always been in almost new condition and arrive in about 2 days. They are usually dirt cheap. Shipping is usually more expensive than the cd, yet it still comes out to less than $5-$6 all-in for the cd.

Thanks for all the help, guys! I’ll check out the torrenting article to get a better understanding.

How about some workout song suggestions? Any favorites? Preferably in the nonheavymetal category (that topic seems to be covered regularly).

you can get anything with bittorrent or IRC. geeks ftw.

The easiest way to get pegged with C/D letters from your ISP is downloading through well known websites.

The cleanest and fastest way to get anything is either through private communities or usenet.
