Donating Bone Marrow

When i signed up to be a marrow doner they had to do a new test and have a long conversation about all the possibilities and about spending time in hospital if its done the old fashioned way etc etc. More than likely they will do it via the blood and you will be fine the next day but if they do perform it the old school way, i was told i would be in the hospital for at least a night or two.

Were you not given any indication of what you were getting into when you signed up? I’m with the Anthony Nolan trust her in England so it may be different but i would have thought it would be almost the same.[/quote]

I initially signed up online on the IBTB, and they sent me out leaflets and took my details regarding my HLA (?) and other stuff. But you will only be contacted by them if you are identified as a possible match for a patient in need of a transplant before that they say nothing.

Two weeks ago i had to go to the blood center in Dublin to assess my suitability and give a further blood sample they asked me at least 100 questions lol.But it’s only now that its been confirmed that my suitability is a perfect match that they want me to come back for a meeting to assess my willingness to donate and answer any questions.

And England is about a billion times better than Ireland health care wise, my sister still has to go to Great Ormond St. every year as Irish hospitals are so crap ! There’s no comparison !

I’ve had a bone marrow /stem cell transplant so I applaud you for what you are doing. You are helping to save someone’s life. Thank you.

The procedure now is more like a blood draw nowadays - takes a bit longer but you’ll be 100% within 48 hours or so.

A bone marrow sample is however, taken from the hip. It’s extremely painful but I would expect you could go back to the gym within a couple of days. I’m not sure a donor would have to do that - tends to be more for the patients.

Not to much different from giving platelets then, takes hour and a half for that.

And congratulations on a successful transplant

My sister also had one, so i know from my parents how bloody hard and painful they are hope all is well now.
