I personally think that this is a damn shame that something that was successfully helping the homeless and destitute is being shut down. I don’t give two shits about a person’s political affiliation if they are doing good work like this. His politics did not dictate his feelings on social responsibility. It is the compassionate, humane and Christian thing to help each other when they need it.
With that being said, I am also taking this as the opinion piece that was written. The author is giving his viewpoint, and I respect that. However, he painted black republicans, black conservatives, democrats and black people in general with a very broad brush.
In his opinion, “many black people in the U.S. are politically and philosophically conservative–and many are in fact actually closeted Republicans, fearful of persecution by friends, business associates, society clubs, schoolmates and even churches.” This is flawed because of the assumption that if you have conservative viewpoints, you are automatically a Republican. There is a difference between the two. One is a personal viewpoint and the other is an endorsement of a political party. You can be conservative, but it doesn’t mean you have to support the republican party. Republicans do not have the monopoly on conservative viewpoints. These viewpoints exists across the political spectrum.
He also mentions many of the black republicans being persecuted because of their political affiliation. Persecution is unfair regardless of political affiliation. However, he makes the assumption that all black republicans are like him. They are not. Blacks are as diverse there as they are in the democratic party Many of them are greedy opportunists, much in the mold of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, doing anything so long as there is money involved. Also, many of them get into positions of power and try to do as much as they can to distance themselves from their community, so as to look like they are not playing favorites. However, they go to such extremes that they hurt far more people than they help. Not all black republicans are like these types, I know too many that are not, but it seems that the ones that make the news end up being these types. It is just that when they are republicans, no one wants to admit these character flaws.
Finally, based on this one incident, democrats are getting trashed yet again. There are assholes no matter where you go, so using this as an example of the democratic party as a whole is the same as using the example of cutting social progams to give money to corporate interest as an example of the republican party as a whole. The obvious bias was present, which is appropriate for an opinion journal.
Since I keep getting labeled, let me just state for the record, that I have been a member of both the democratic party and, up until a few years ago, the republican party. I have abandoned both parties because neither one truly represents my views. I will stay an independent until these parties either gets their acts together, or self-destruct out of existence.
