Back to the gym
Warmup
4x3s bagwork
4x3s shadoboxing
2x3s Skipping
Horrible tightening of the calves, so played some school sparring in the ring then for 6x 3s.
Our youths are attending the national champs this weekend, so the gym wil be back to normal monday.
I’ll be meeting with my S&C coach Monday morning. Very excited though I know he’ll make me regret it ![]()
`Work has been really tough without worKing out so much. My energy levels are o the floor for some reason and my concentration is poor at best. Really looking forward to having my normal lfestyle back!!
bit of cheese first though…

Gave the site a bit of a reprieve from my rambling, but I wasn’t taking a layoff, I was having the forearm/wrist treated. It seemed to work as I got back training last night. I had shied away from the open boxing sessions and for good reason. When I returned last night one of our old pro’s had come back for a session and one of the top amateurs was looking for some sparring. I couldnt say no. Or more accurately I didn’t want to.
Warmup;
Very basic traditional warm up.
Star jumps, Fw/Bk, Knees up etc.; all the old basics, got a good sweat up.
Drilled some basic combinations, military style and geared up for sparring.
Round Robin Sparring 6 x 3’s
1 x 1.5 with partner a, straight into 1 x 1.5 with partner b. 1.5 mins break then as they spar.
The Irish saying goes “a rest is better than a cure.” I may not be cured, but I felt great last night.
I knew my fitness wasn’t up to scratch so it created a much more cerebral challenge and I feel I rose to the occasion.
My feet were of vital importance, but I didnt want to concede much ground against two bigger stronger guys.
I planted the lead foot and circled using the rear (as discussed previously with London) This created several counter opportunities, so I was quite satisfied and smug.
3x3’s skipping
I never skip because of notoriously tight calves, but I launched into it last night 20 low intensity 10 high intensity. Very tight and sore calves after, But didnt I look cool?
(No, no I didn’t)
3x3’s Bagwork
I proceeded to do 4x3’s bagwork utilising only my back hand. I found myself very inclined to switch southpaw, but I tried to insist upon myself remaining orthodox.
During the earlier sparring, I had landed one very good right hand lead (set up by the feet) and I would be anxious to make this a recurring theme in my sparring!
I was given a pardon from pressups and floorwork after training because of the wrist.
I never threw it hard all night and only felt one twinge when I landed a hook to the body.
Its not better, but its no longer an excuse to slack off.
An rpe last night of 8, because I find it tough getting back into it.
This came on as we finished.
There’s a clip of B-Hop explaining how his lead right is so effective. I think it might have been in the video with Rashad Evans that’s on here somewhere. Well worth checking out. If you don’t know the clip I’m talking about let me know and I’ll dig it out.

I try to earn my keep.

Oh look, here’s the forum’s white knight, riding to the rescue and making the rest of us look bad. This is where I would put a smiley wink face if I were a twelve year old girl.
Thanks for digging out the link, Robert. I was so tired last night I couldn’t type straight, but i read Donnydarkoirl’s comment earlier in the day about doing some nice lead right work, and remembered that B-hop had some words of wisdom to share on the subject that someone on here had brought to my attention, and wanted to write it down before I forgot. It’s a cracking (craicing) clip, and it’s also a nice technique when you’re doing a lot of busy back footwork, as Donny suggested he was doing at the time.
Thanks for the video gents, I’ve seen it before, but its been sometime.
Hopkins is certainly one of my favourites and he gives some great advice in this video.
What appeals to me are that some of his tips, dont quite go by the boxing textbook.
His thoughts are battle tested and he recommends what works.
I’m sure you’ve both seen this, but for the sake of the thread;
His explanation of the jab, its uses and its variations are that of a boxing sage.
17.06.13. PM
Warmup
Cardio warmup and dynamic stretching.
4x3s Shadowboxing
4x3s Skipping
4x3s Bagwork (one handed)
1 mile lap
Cool down
Tonight’s session was great.
My technique was satisfactory, but more importantly I gleaned some real enjoyment from my training.
There are a couple of more areas I feel I need to develop, but the work in one arm really is bringing my right hand much more into play.
Going to experiment with diet and workload in the coming days.
I spoke to my S&C coach earlier and he’s willing to have me step things up.
Excited ![]()

Sorry to DonnyDarkoIRL and thanks for posting the jab video. That is another great one.

No need to apologise to me…
The name gives it away -
London is English… You know how us Irish folk feel about those guys haha
In seriousness though, thanks for all the feedback and advice. I think mental development is making this phase a lot easier than were I just sitting back countuing down days until I can train fully again!
All these videos, articles and snippets of information, I think, will help fill me out as a fighter.
19.06.13 PM
Back to the sweltering heat in the gym today and I enjoyed immensely!
The junior session I train along with before my fights was very quite, so I waited for the senior crew to start.
When we set up the gym was crowded which was great.
A guy arrived from a gym in my home town, so even one handed I had to look impressive haha.
Warmup- Cardio and dynamic warmup.
Brief technique drilling.
4x3s Skipping 10/20 intervals.
4x3s Bagwork still 1 handed, and it’s becoming surprisingly comfortable!
4x3s Shadowboxing in the ring today, I was worried my movement was becoming a bit 2D using just the mirrors, so I commandeered the ring and added more realism.
I had one of this evenings where training eased into discussion.
Our 2nd coach was victim here- an international amateur he technically has seen it all, so I picked his brain for a while.
We discussed a lot of things- I’m
Having a problem with my rear foot doing the simplest thing of all the 1-2…
Back to basics

That right there is fighting talk. Pretty sure this is where I have to offer to buy you a plane ticket and fly you to my neck of the woods for some kind of homoerotic slapfest to decide who the ultimate man is. Or do I just tell you I’m bigger than you (by 4 whole pounds no less!!!), because apparently that’s a good way of deciding who is going to come out on top anyway.
Good to see you’re back training half-way properly. I really like the touch sparring with bare hands you mentioned. I think it’s one of the best things you can do to develop techniquein a controlled but competitive environment. We’ll often get 3 or four pairs of guys in the rings doing a couple of rounds of this before we move on to the bulk of an evening’s work.

I’ve also heard making a youtube video and slandering me (and my momma) á la Charlie Zelenoff is incredibly effective and a proven method of proving your testicular fortitude haha.
Yeah, its nice to be back - I remember watching some old military footage from between the Wars. Britain had their soldiers school sparring in huge groups- rotating partners at whatever intervals. What a marvelous idea for adapting to different styles!
Was on facebook earlier London and saw Ben Doughty had a photo up with Terry Dunstan.
Was Terry down in London sparring - or have you heard anything of his movements?

I don’t know anything about that to be honest mate. I’m out of the loop a bit at the moment with working more hours. Hoping to get down to the gym tomorrow night, so will see what the craic is on that. I don’t know Ben all that well, but I have had the privilege of spending some time on the pads with him, and receiving some of his advice and wisdom when we spent some time at the same club. Terry Dunstan I don’t know at all, although I have seen him fight (Prizefighter) when he resumed his career.

I understand mate; similar to myself!
I met Terry through his coach and they were top guys, had a great time with them over in Sheffield too.
Ben, I don’t know personally as he was out of the gym while I was over, but he seems a really good guy and i’ve heard all good things about his technique.
24.06.13 AM
Up out of bed for a 6.00am run before work.
It was a lovely morning so I picked a tough, hilly route.
My heart rate was at about 165 for the entire time.
My legs are traditionally a weak point (I have trouble with my calves,)
but they were solid throughout and I’m looking forward to training tonight.
24.06.13 PM
Back in the gym and feeling bold.
I wrapped up both hands and warmed up.
Aerobic Warmup.
Basic drilling.
4x3s Skipping 10/20 Intervals.
4x3s Bagwork.
This was the first time I have used both hands in some time. I didn’t have the confidence to throw the left with any conviction, but it did not hurt and It was great to use it.
4x3s Shadowboxing
Again I used the ring and found it fantastic. I used the center point as a hinge. If on the defense I rotated around the center point, never retreating straight back. If on the attack I kept my back to the center point, cutting down space all the time.
My legs recovered very well before this session and I was happy with my training.
Again, the gym was very hot and sticky - I’m glad I went back when I did. In the coming weeks the amateurs have an “off season.” Anyone training with the national squad will continue to do so, but others are given a 3 week reprieve.
If I had waited any longer I would have been going back training without the encouragement of anyone but myself and frankly I don’t trust myself at all lately haha.
Really got the nutrition in line the past few days, so hopefully this aids in recovery.
Because its summer…
25.06.13 AM
Woke up without too much pain, but the extra workload has taken a little toll on my nervous system. I must get some BCAA’s.
Mildly encouraged by some whisperings, that I could FINALLY get a fight here at home I’ve been eating well.
This morning I set out on my new strength program.
Warmup;
5 Mins on the Arc Trainer
Mobility Circuit;
Toe Touch Squat
Side Lunge
Rotationsl Pushups
Strength;
Box Squat Working sets - 5 x 5s
NOTE: went back into these lighter than I’m capable. Mobility seemed good, but concious of some tension in the hip flexors.
Bench Press Working Sets - 5 x 5s
Very pleased with these today. Nice intermediate load, but good stability and muscle activation.
One Armed Rows 4 x 8s
NOTE; performed these one arm on the bench, feet shoulder width, straight legged, bracing the core.
Good for the core, but there may be better options for my upper back. I will think about this.
Cooldown Phase;
Swimming. I will try to introduce this again- its been a while!
Its not just a video; there’s music too
26.06.13 AM
Really nice morning yesterday, so i was up and out early.
I had a few problems with the session, so it will definitely be tweaked, but I think it could be really beneficial.
Warmup;
Some light Jogging, lateral shuffles etc.
Hill Sprints;
1 minute On, 30 seconds resting.
Sprinting up a 35 to 40 degree pitch, with an approximate length of 15 to 20m.
I just performed 5 today, which on paper looks pretty awful, but I did manage to go balls to the wall for the 5 minutes.
I went inside to the gym.
Chinups
5 sets of 6’s
This were relatively easy, just setting up for loading next week.
Ez Curls.
5 sets of 8’s nice heavy load, this provides great relief for my elbows.
With the biceps acting as decelerators when punching, I have neglected this up until the last year or so.
Calve curl
Lay on a bench Face up, DB hooked with feet and hinged the feet so that I was pulling my toes toward me and controlling on the way back. High reps here with a mediocre weight.
Cable Crunch.
I havent quite taken these to the level that John Meadows has on his section of the forum, but I was still quite happy here.
5 sets of 10.
Cooldown on the low seated bike.
I find these far better on the hip flexors.
It was an ok morning. I think I will shift the hill sprints until last/ The basic exercises in the gym were fine and mostly for health.
Need to get BCAA’s into my system.
20.06.13 pm
Opened up the gym at 6.30 for the junior session; the senior coaches were away, but was a quiet session, so easily managed.
Started warming up at 7.15 and called the seniors to start at 7.30.
I led the warmup so went through the following;
Shoulder rotations.
Scap pullbacks.
Wrsit rotations.
Hip Mobility.
before we moved onto the usual aerobic workout. I had them drill some quick combinations and divided the numbers.
First for me was shadowboxing.
4x3s In the ring.
I’m still on my toes, but trying to take some movements from the like s of James Toney, gliding as opposed to bouncing from place to place. I’m eager to try this in sparring, having watched Gennady Golokin’s early pro and am fights. It is evident he wastes no energy in mobility and instead uses his reserves for impact.
4 x 3s 10/20 Intervals as always. My legs weren’t too adversely affected by the squatting the day previous or the hill sprints that morning. Calves are still an issue, but I took a very carb-y shake after this session, foam rolled them and wore compression pants.
4 x 3s Bagwork.
Nice and tough in the thick heat.
I still cant commit to hitting with any considerable force, so I was trying to string together the combinations.
I was quite happy and have noticed a bit of a change in my stance, which is engaging the right had a lot more effectively.
This Wednesday was by far the most stressful day I’ve had in memory, but I felt I ticked the boxes and thought it a success. A lot of stuff went wrong; at home, at work and for my daughter, but I sorted it all out.
I went home, showered and changed and then spent some time, just relaxing talking to my housemate.
I then went to bed and fell into a half sleep.
Only to be awoken by thoughts racing through my mind and my heart accelerating at an amazing pace. I had what now appears to be an anxiety attack;
which is not cool really.
I did not enjoy it.
Ah well, Tony Soprano had 'em too.
