Does Milk Slow Down PWO Absorption?

I recently heard that it is better to drink water with PWO shakes instead of milk as milk can slow the absorption of the protein?

Is there any truth behind this?

I can’t give you the science, but it makes sense. Seeing as milk protein is 80% casein which is a slow-digesting protein.

Just stick with plain Surge in water. If you can’t stand the taste add in Power Drive.

Also, check out Dave Barr’s new article that covers this stuff:

If you are talking about Surge? It was explained to me that using milk will interfere with the quick insulin spike you want and need to shuttle the amino acids into the muscle cells. Milk will slow this process, but I guess there has been some debate on PWO recently?

I’ve never really understood this, as Berardi has always said that milk is an anomaly, as compared to most other foods: while the GI is very low, the II is incredibly high and causes huge insulin surges (no pun intended), so I would think milk would be optimal PWO…

I personally don’t use it, I just wish someone could explain this whole “milk is bad PWO” thing to me for the sake of knowledge.

Skim chocolate milk is better than nothing post-training. Berardi said it in his D-Tap interview. But don’t add milk to Surge, its formula is perfected as is and you only need water. About the only think you can add to Surge that won’t mess up the formula is plain creatine.

  1. Milk curdles in the stomach (some of it solidifies) slowing the PWO shake from leaving the stomach

  2. most milk contains fat… again slowing digestion

  3. unless your diet and training is 100% spot on (literally) any slight difference between milk and water will not be seen

You’re confusing absorption with the insulin index. While the insulin index is apparently high, it is not digested/absorbed as quickly as something like Biotest Surge.
