I didn’t think non-competitors did this, but the more I read this forum the more I see guys give the mass of their food. I get it when you say “100g of oats” because you know the size of your scoop or something. But when someone says “400g of potato” I’m like “tell me you didn’t put your potato on a triple beam balance.”
But seriously, do any of you weigh/mass your food? I thought scales were like, a few hundred bucks for a decent electric? Where’d you get yours? (just curious)
I weigh all my foods because that’s what is required on my diet, protein/carb wise. Fats are a table or teaspoon. Vegetables are… well they are unlimited.

A food scale is 10-20 dollars.
Same here. I measure out my beef into the correct portions when I buy it and freeze them. Unless the package is an even number, then I just eyeball it.
But my peanut butter constantly has a Tablespoon measuring spoon in it.
Weighing food such as meats and carbs is extremely important even if you are familiar with the food. I used to go by feel but when I started weighing my food I found out I was sometimes up to 70 to 100g off what I was supposed to be having in some cases.
When its something so simple as using a 10dollar food scale to ensure accuracy, weighing food is vital to success in the same vain with keeping a training diary or progress pics.
Yes… Sometimes. If you’re trying to diet down or trim fat it’s Extremely helpful. If you’re bulking then well, just eat as much as you can… No need to weigh it
Like everyone else said I don’t weigh out or measure veggies. Do you guys weigh your meat pre cooked or cooked?
My GF is a manager at a housewares type store so we got an awesome digital scale for half price. Was like $25 instead of $50
They have nice scales on Amazon for $25 (Escali - it comes in a bazillion colors and has never let me down)…mine has been invaluable for dieting. Also, with things like oatmeal you’d be surprised at how inaccurate a scooped cup measurement is when you compare it with a weighed cup.
Gregron…I weigh mine both ways - I have the macros for both cooked and uncooked for a lot of things in a spreadsheet. Sometimes it’s easier one way or the other.
I weigh all my food, too. The scale was like $10 and definitely worth it. I use if for cooked meat, beans, whey, malto, etc. It’s an easy way to make sure I’m getting enough food as I would under-eat if left alone.
Yeah, I use a digital scale I got off Amazon. Though I didn’t use it for like a year, until I started a diet and really needed to know what my total intake of things were.
I and my wife weigh and measure my food and have for years; and we are not professional athletes…just want to be healthy and strong. We use a scale from Target - cost about $15.00.

Goddamn my physics teacher is an asshole. I asked him off the cuff what a 1/10th (g) scale would cost and he’s like “oh, couple hundred.”
They’re like, 50$ online with a max weight of 4lb.
Asshole.
There might be a difference in tolerances, quality, and durability between what he’s thinking of and what you’re finding on Amazon.
I am currently on my third digital food scale. I use it constantly, not just for dieting but because I am a serious baker and cook. First one was a Salter, and it gave out after a couple of years. Something might have spilled on a button and soaked through and ruined some delicate electronics. Second one was a Taylor flat glass model from Target, no buttons – but the “touch” pad idea NEVER worked well and the display died after about 9 months. Piece of crap. Current one is the Oxo food scale, which is way better than the other two.
Also have a scale that measures in grains (for making arrows).
Pastry chefs use models that cost 200-300. There is a difference in precision, accuracy, and durability.
I weigh all my food. No need for a expensive scale. If it’s canned or packaged I go strictly with the serving size. I don’t count veggie snacks like raw carrots, spinach, or broccoli cauliflower.
You can’t expect to be making progress and KNOW that your diet is in order if you have no clue how much you’re eating. It’s ridiculous how many people who “can’t gain weight” aren’t eating enough, or those who “can’t lose weight” are overeating. Seriously, it’s not that complicated. Buy a scale, buy a spiral notebook, and buy some self control.

So true. I don’t know how many 1000s of times this has happened on forums/in the gym
Guy 1 “I can’t gain weight”
Guy 2 “Well how much are you eating and the macros?”
Guy 1 “… a lot”
Guy 2 “Ok, but… how much?”
Guy 1 “… it’s a lot”
or continue the conversation and the second guy asks the first to log his diet on fitday or write it all down for a few days… the first guy is never to be heard from again because he doesn’t GET IT.
lol People who have been in this for a long time don’t necessarily need to log their food or weigh things out(although many do) but it should be common sense that if you need 3500 calories and a minimum 300 grams of protein to grow… you better be sure you are getting those calories/protein grams.
Your Physics teacher did not lie to you. Chances are that the Physics department is buying scales that are pretty decent quality and they ARE expensive. I work for a food manufacturer and we have food scales everywhere.
From large electric/digital ones that are thousands of dollars to small scales meant for weighing out grams that are several hundred dollars. Now, I have digital scales at the house that are great and cost me around $50. There are plenty out there in that range and even less.
I have been using mine less and less though. I am like C_C in the way that I eat the same shit every day and am OK with it so I know my portions and what they weigh.
