Dodgin’ Dadbods: Fortitude Training

Yeah. You want the 300lb guy on your team, but you probably want to be the 200lb guy.

Never be the slowest in your group in the jungle lol.

You were dealing with a tag team of idiocy there. One of those dudes is on my “do not engage” list, as every time I tried in earnest to have a conversation with them I basically had to explain every single thing I said multiple times for them to still completely miss the point. Juice wasn’t worth the squeeze.

are you talking about the “train like a lion” guy

I am not.

Finally, someone who gets it!!!

Unfortunately, I cannot force myself to train to run many miles.

I convince myself that my training is adequate. Meanwhile, I lift four-ish days per week and run zero. I’m also living in America and we seem like we’re one or two big events from someone turning out the lights and putting us on Mad Max’s Fury Road. I could probably lift two days a week and run two days a week…

I mean, what am I going to do if I have to vacate the city and my home gym and live in the woods? I don’t think weight lifting is going to be very important anymore, but I’ll appreciate the strength I’ve developed over the years. The problem is that I have to actually make it to the woods.

Yup, that’s where I’m at now. Especially since the same thing occurred pretty much simultaneously in another thread - person enters, person says something a bit outlandish, person picks up the goalposts of their own argument and runs with them, then picks up YOUR goalposts and runs in the opposite direction, until they arrive at some weird alternate universe where they don’t have to admit that their viewpoint was flawed.

I’m hoping that my map and land-nav skills from boot camp/ITB come back to me if I have to go live in the woods, and I’m fairly sure I remember how to make traps from my time in the Philippines, plus they showed me how to make a fire with nothing but a piece of bamboo and a knife.

Did I read somewhere you’re going back to school? I’m obviously late to that party, but good luck. What program?

Yeah, I just registered for Math 154, Developmental Psych 230 and some stupid College Success Skills course that’s a prerequisite for any program here, then I have Anatomy and Physiology in the spring, and that’s all to transfer to the nursing RN program. From there, it’ll be the RN to BSN program at VCU for my bachelors, and then HOPEFULLY I can end up getting into a school for Nurse Practitioner, which is my end goal.

Excellent. That’s a long road - best of luck. It’s good you have an end goal for the degree; I think it’s nearly impossible to just do it to do it, if that makes sense.

Yeah, if I didn’t have some end goal I was working towards, no fuckin way would I do the classic American college student deal of “meh, I don’t know what I want to be when I grow up so I’ll just take liberal arts classes til I get a degree of some sort”. Can’t afford to bullshit around, I need a specific plan of action.
Healthcare isn’t going anywhere, and I don’t particularly like most doctors nowadays, not through any fault of theirs, but doctors have gone from the ‘family doctor’ model of old to the faceless machines with no emotions of today, and that’s where the profession that bridges the gap of nurse and doctor falls into place. I love every NP I’ve ever had the fortune to have an appointment with.

My favorite person at the doctor’s office was the nurse. I actually requested her every time I made an appointment. My doctor is great, but the NP just understood me. I broke my ankle and she forced me to go see a specialist to make sure it healed correctly. I told her I snored and she forced me to get a sleep study to check for sleep apnea because her seemingly healthy husband died in his sleep. She understood that I’m not the typical patient and I push things in terms of physical training.

I’m sad to say that I recently FB stalked her to get a recommendation for a specialist.

There’s a lot going on in the business model of the healthcare landscape, and nobody needs my opinion there, but I will say I’ve been very impressed with providers. It’s a noble profession and I definitely wish you luck.

I agree the “family practitioner” model has mostly been phased out, which has not benefited the patient. The NP, and to some extent the PA, are definitely seeing an expansion in scope to fill that gap.

Last week of deep water will start a day late, tomorrow. I ended up sleeping on my stomach the whole night last night - normally I try to sleep on my side or my back - and my lower back was so tight that I felt popping every time I bent over. Hoping to finish my deep water experience with a 250 x 30 on deadlifts and today was just not the day to try for that, so I did a bunch of mobility stuff, then some seated barbell overhead work, some dumbbell incline, and then 8 rounds of heavy bag work. Finished with neck extensions holding a 10 lb plate behind my head and leaning on a low incline bench, 2 sets of 25. Was absolutely drenched in sweat and worked really hard, back started to loosen up halfway through the boxing, and feels much better now.

VERY happy to be done with Deep Water run #2, it’s been much more sluggish of a run than the first one, which I probably should have anticipated, but it’s fine. The plan is maintain strength during this upcoming cut.

In boxing news, since I should start logging some of my issues and weaknesses/strengths, need to control my rear elbow raising when I jab, as it’s leaving my ribs a bit exposed.

My lead hand hook continues to gain power - my double right hook body-head combo rocks the heavy bag so hard that the structure it’s attached to starts shaking.

Need to work on my footwork a bit more when closing the distance from cross to hook, and wish I had a better type of structure to work on my uppercuts with.

I continue to improve not-telegraphing my jab, letting the speed start at my little finger, as it were, and ending in a tight snap with the index-ring knuckle shelf.

Also need to remember to put my lead hip into the opponent’s heart while pulling my rear shoulder back, I have a tendency to face my imaginary opponent more as I get tired.

Head movement could improve, likely need to set up a string for some slip/duck work next time.

My wrap technique has changed 2 times but is now perfect - absolutely minimal knuckle protection, maximal wrist support works best for me. There’s really no point in using wraps to protect your knuckles anyhow.

By the way, I’m a southpaw. In case my lead hook being my right hook confuses anyone, haha.

Just a follow up dude, I’m going to do the 5/3/1 for hardgainers as a 2x/week like you outlined, but the only thing was that if you’re alternating squat and deadlift week by week, wouldn’t it ruin the progression from 65-85% to 75-95%? I was thinking of doing it where I alternate week by week so that week 1 my squat involves a widowmaker set and my deadlift 5+ set is just a regular 5 a la 5’s pro, and then week 2 my squat is a 5’s pro and my deadlift is a PR set, so that way I could do a squat/bench and a dead/press. What dyou think?

All opinions welcome too from everyone who pitched in before and anyone else who cares.

Hmm, I was thinking of just taking that 3 week template and doing it over 6 weeks. So you would only do the big lifts every other week.

Week 1
Squat 531
Widow maker
50-100 push/pull/lower

Bench 5x5
50-100 push/pull
20-30 minutes sled/hooks/carries

Week 2
Deadlift 531
5 x 5 fsl50-100 push/pull/lower

Press 5s pro
10 x 5 fsl
50-100 push/pull
20-30 minutes sled/hills/carries

You may lose some frequency on those big lifts, but you can push the assistance and the sled work super hard

OH, I like that a lot. The idea here is basically maintenance of strength if not some slow accumulation of it, and while once/2 weeks isn’t much frequency, I think it’s enough for what I’m looking for, especially, as you said, hammering assistance, and boxing/swimming on “off” days

Alright, so that’s the plan!

Obviously going from 65-85% to 75-95%, BUT- will be doing SSB squats - which I believe Jim is a big fan of for widowmakers anyway - and incline Bench, because I definitely tried flat benching again, but whether I flare my arms more or tuck them more, or arch or not, my damn AC joints ALWAYS start to hurt with flat bench.
