Do You Really Control Your Own Life?

I was listening to some educational thing on NPR this morning, and they said that the three biggest factors at birth that can determine success in life are IQ, Socio-Economic Status, and the ability to delay gratification.
In other words, if you are willing to sacrifice and work hard (Attydeb), you have a better shot. Also, if you are born rich (Dan Qualle) or brilliant (Steve Jobs), you might have an easier life.

So if you were born a goat herder in Somalia, your odds of becoming rich or successful by Western terms are very low.
The quote from Orion sums it up nicely.

Explain the farmers like my grandpa that the only reason he went to college was to play ball and after that he went back to the farm and ended up running/owning huge parts of places like Kansas, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Texas, Nebraska, &c. My grandpa is smart, I doubt he has a high IQ. There is plenty of people with average IQ’s that do well but I definitely am more successful than some of my smarter counterparts.

According to the NPR theory - this would fall under delayed gratification. My guess is that your grandfather got to where he was through hard work and saving. Also, he had the economic environment to do well. Maybe access to capital, a strong price-supported commodities market, etc? The depression era farmers in the United States had it better off than the depression era farmers in Soviet Russia.
IMO, raw intelligence is hard to measure. He was probably a good negotiator with people skills. Also, he played ball, so he may have had a sort of bio-mechanical intelligence or intuition.
From what I have witnessed in a corporate environment, people skills seem to be the biggest determiner of success. IMO that could also be considered a kind of intelligence.

You may be employed, but someone else decided you would be employed. Some people just get lucky or have connections.
That’s not luck. Companies hire people they need. You either have the skill for the job or you don’t. And in the case of two equally skilled people going for the same job, the person who impresses most at the intervew gets the position.

Seems to me that the lady your quoted got the job because she had the required skill set and sold herself well in the interview. Nothing lucky there at all.
I guess that means that you can work on your skill, and your ability to impress people with it. And that my friend has NOTHING to do with luck!

Umm, so you agree with me?

To say that those are the three biggest factors is not to say that they are the only factors or that in their absence success is impossible. An anecdote about your grandfather does nothing to disprove a generality about success in life.

The homeless guy with the golden radio voice may end up doing real well for himself with a shitty IQ, a shitty inherited socio-economic position, and no ability to delay gratification…that doesn’t make NPR’s point any more or less true.

Why do people keep saying clip11 is headhunter?
I don’t know where the posts are, but they write very similar, as well the couple of posts clip wrote something that we’d expect out of HH. And, I believe they “live” in the same area. As well we had a few detectives on this side that did some unmentionables to figure out and they supposedly found proof they were through IP or something. I unno.
Have they really matched IP info? If so, someone should present it to the mods already and get his IP banned to put a stop to this nonsense once and for all. I’ve got good reason to believe that HH is behind Nominal Prospect as well (all three react in the same way when you put pressure on them or engage in a lengthy dialogue).

I called NP out a while ago (just as I called out Clip), and put forth reasons why he wasn’t who he claimed to be. He hasn’t responded to me since, nor has Clip since his call-out. Very uncharacteristic of both.

Fuck “destiny”.

We are sum of our decisions. You can either make decisions like THIS

or like THIS

It’s YOUR decision.

Having “connections” is simply meeting people with influence. GO OUT AND MEET THEM.

HH is a teacher correct my “theory” is I believe he has created numerous accounts to use as teaching material. Sociology project. Rohyn is the other account. If you read most of the thread topics, Clip is his “black” experience Rohyn is “latino” experience. They are always social situation type threads. Now back to our regularly scheduled program.

You must constantly ask yourself these questions: Who am I around? What are they

doing to me? What have they got me reading? What have they got me saying? Where do

they have me going? What do they have me thinking? And most important, what do they

have me becoming? Then ask yourself the big questions: Is that okay? Your life does not

get better by chance, it gets better by change.

Destiny is just an excuse to wait for things to happen instead of making them happen.

Seems like Deb figured out that you indeed do control your fate.

I’m not convinced his intentions are as honorable as that. If they were he’d have PM’d myself and others and asked us to stop trying to expose his aliases as fakes. His alternate identities go way beyond Rohyn and Clip, although I agree that he forms identities around race or a gimmick - Nominal Prospect is his “white” experience, for instance (I have my suspicions that he’s Alffi and that Bundy guy but I haven’t interacted with them long enough to find out. They all follow a set pattern and that’s why they are easy to spot).

Besides, HH is known for pushing peoples’ buttons in ways that can’t be explained away as a ‘teaching tool’ e.g. abusive pms, anti-bodybuilding posts, and general bullshit. Finally, out of all the sites he could conduct his social experiments on, why this one?

His personal need, he needed insight from experts on Test replacement. Also friend of mine was a teacher for 5-6 years, he spent a ton of time on this site when he was teaching. Helped kill the time and HH like you said likes to push buttons. He may not be using it directly in his curriculum, however for a loose base study “poll” to push on his students.

Fair enough, but some of the stunts he’s pulled in the past (especially under his aliases) have been decidedly uncool and have no applications in the classroom as far as I can see. And I personally don’t agree with manipulating people for any reason, unless that manipulation benefits the person by highlighting the predictable behaviour patterns that allowed them to be manipulated in the first place. Anything else comes off as vindictive and egotistical.

When I asked “why did he choose this site?” I didn’t mean why did he come here: what I meant was why, if he is using the findings of these “experiments” to help him in his role as a teacher, he found the readership of this site to be suitable subjects more than anywhere else.

Doesn’t really matter in the end. Most people aren’t really concerned with whether the person they are talking to is real anyway. They just accept it. Nominal Prospect got away with it for years (and would probably still get away with it if he ever resurfaced) and people are still responding to Clip.

There are ways to get around that. Especially for a wily teacher with access to a computer at work and at home.

Target audience, here are a younger generation almost equivalent to what he is teaching. Believe me its horseshit in my opinion also, just my “feel” of the situation. He also knows most people dont read the thread if it is on page 3 or 4. They skip to the end.
