Do You Count Dietary Fiber/Sugar?

I subtract rice from my carb total and chicken from my protein total.

Thibs says the only carbs not to count are the ones in fibrous green vegetables but to count all other carbs including the fiber carbs in other vegetables.

and as Trenchant mentioned, there can be as much a 2gs of carbs in one stick of gum

I count it all, but don’t really worry myself about spinach, broccli and celery carbs.

Here’s a riddle, I see this a lot.

Say some food has 20g of “Total Carbs”.

It then says 6g of fiber, and 8g of sugar.

Where/what is the other 6g?

I don’t know the answer to that but I am hoping you are counting the total carbs and are not subtracting the fiber.

The only fiber you don’t count is from fibrous green vegetables and of course any fiber supplment product you are using.

the missing CHO are usually Starches. Some products list them n some don’t. (special K cereals i think etc)

Why aren’t you supposed to subtract the fiber here? Isn’t fiber just fiber, does source matter?

From what I read in Thibs thread is not all fiber is indigestible and can still be somewhat absorbed by the body.

As a result of this, Thibs says to only subtract the fiber from fibrous green vegetables and your fiber supplement and even with the fiber supplement you STILL have to check for sugar.

No, I don’t even eat foods that try to play a game at all. The only thing I eat that has carbs are vegetables. Meat and vegetables is what I eat.

Most fibre dosn’t effect your blood sugar, aka it dosn’t trigger insulin. That means you subtract it from your totaly as its kind of like a phony carb, just passing through you.

My current thinking with low card dieting is to set a limit for sugars+starch carbohydrates - e.g. 30g… and then allow 20-30g of pure fiber on top of that.
