Please expand on this. Particularly how republicans are more culpable to the fact black communities are still overwhelmingly poor.
I guess it would be from my view point of a working class person watching the majority of tax cuts going to the wealthiest . And now that the wealthy got their tax cuts they are screaming that we are going off a cliff (which I believe) just my opinion

This should frighten you.

Which tax cuts are you refering to here?

(Do I need to post “tax system explained in beer” again?)

Can you prove that these people, including the original speaker, are using the term “belong to” in the same way that you are?

In other words, it sounds to me like these people are using the word “belong” in the way that it is used in the following sentence: “Joe and Jim are very avid shooters, and neither of them is ashamed to say that they belong to the NRA.” The speaker in that sentence is not, by any stretch of the imgaination, implying that the NRA has or claims ownership over Jim and Joe.

That is, they are saying that we may not participate in or identify with the same ethnic or religious or whatever group, but we do all participate in and identify with the government of the United States.

Poor word choice maybe, but it doesn’t in any way seem like these people are trying to say that the citizens of the government are the property of the government. If you know something I don’t about this whole thing, by all means say so. But if not, this seems like a lot of feigned outrage and intentional misinterpretation.

This confuses me. The working class pay a lower rate so right off the top they pay less as a % of their gross income. So from a logical stand point it makes sense that someone that pays a higher % get more benefit out of a cut. It’s like on the one hand you want the lower/middle class to pay lower rates, but also receive all the benefits of a tax break, why do you think that and how would that even work?

Look, here is the thing:

Anyone who can hear the words “belong to government” without cringing is more or less a lost cause.

In my opinion.

No matter how they “interpret” it.

Okay, after:
“spread the wealth around”
“You didn’t build that”
and now
“we all belong to the government”

You are still, still, claiming we are taking these things out of context?

I mean, how many times does something have to happen before we can all admit the truth here?

Bush tax cuts , I know the rich pay more taxes so they should get more of a cut even a disproportionate tax cut

Martin Luther King Jr. just rolled over in his grave, that’s for sure.

I am saying that I truly don’t believe the speaker intended it to mean what all of you wish he had. It really doesn’t sound like that to me. My uncle tells me that my nephew belongs to the science club now…does that mean that slavery has been re-instituted in the state of Texas?

For the record, I do have the reaction that you are describing. It just sounds wrong. And the people interviewed are idiots (though, finding idiots on the street and choosing the biggest ones among them for your propaganda piece is not what I’d call good journalism).

And the “you didn’t build that” thing is another ridiculous non-issue. Bad word choice, and in terms of contemporary politics, abysmal word choice. But he was making a point that every single person on this board and in this country knows to be true. It is such a fucking self-evident platitude that it’s almost stupid that it was even spoken out loud in the first place, but apparently that point needs to be made in these times of screaming hysteria.

In line with smh23, I think part of the issue is that given the situation I think the people in the video want to say what they think they are supposed to say. If they actually thought about it and weren’t in a crowd I think at least some of them would react differently.
pittbulll wrote:

Nonsense, the Bush tax cuts gave every working American a 5% reduction. Furthermore, the top 1% pay 37% of all taxes and the top 10% pay 70% of all taxes. Hence, you pay less, far less than the wealthy. I know who cares about fax especially right after the DNC.

I agree it shouldn’t be an issue, but disagree that it’s not an issue. The president made it an issue. Yes we all use the road, school, etc…, but we also all paid for the roads, schools, etc…

The “you didn’t build that” was a direct attempt to demonize someone like Romney, while galvanizing the poor/working class that voted for him last to get “free stuff.”

That’s how I took the comment anyway.

I hope so lol.

There is no evidence that it was the speaker’s intent to imply that Americans are or should be the property of their government. In fact, in context it seems like there’s strong evidence against that claim.

But, if you then you kick it down to the least rational and eloquent streetwalkers you can find, they will do your job for you and make it look like the DNC is a klan rally just twitching with excitement over the prospect of keeping the slaves on the plantation for another 4 years.

Every successful businessman should be proud of their success, and it should never be diminished by anyone out of envy or spite. But every person who has succeeded in a cooperative society should acknowledge and understand that the road to prosperity in contemporary America, especially in a globalized economy, exists in large part because of things the government has done over the past century.

Yeah…it’s just Obama choosing his words poorly that’s all it is. He doesn’t really think that “someone else built that for you” when referring to hard working business people. And when he slapped Joe the Plumber on the back and said that he wanted “to spread the wealth around…” he really didn’t mean redistribution of wealth…not at all. And when he said that “the wealthy are not paying their fair share” (even though the top 1% pay 37% of all income tax) he really didn’t mean that either. And when he said he wanted to allow the Bush tax cuts to expire if he is reelected of course he didn’t mean that one.

He actually means the opposite of what he is saying. He’s linguistically retarded.

No?

Well…then I guess he did mean what he said.

And if that’s the case there is no good reason for any American who works hard and pays taxes to vote for this clown.
