I miss him as well. He gave me inspiration as being a fellow “short guy” (5’8) I was actually looking through old Pride matches and when you compare it to todays MMA scene,its really worlds apart. Gone are the days of soccer kicks and head stomps and the mentality of “Honor” among fighters.

My biggest issue with the mentality of most fighters today is that their record comes first. Obviously winning is important as it guarantees income for you and your family, but the “win at all cost” and safe fighting has really been putting a damper on a lot of the events. There are a lot of exceptions, but Pride was really just a huge showcase of warriors putting their fighting spirit on display.

I think Pride being sold to the UFC was actually detrimental to the sport. Before 2007,we had two large organization with their own set of rules and regulations and a stable of great fighters. Now that UFC has basically a monopoly over MMA,we see former Pride fighters scattered all over the place. Crocop and Wand went to UFC,Igor,ofcoarse Retired,and Kharitonov and Alistair went to K-1.
Add to the fact,UFC is incredibly watered down with these new crop of fighters that want to “play it safe” And the sad part is that there is very little diversity in UFC compared to Pride. In Pride,we had Japanese,Brazilian,Americans,Mexicans,Russians,Eastern Europeans,and bits and pieces of other nations. UFC has mostly American and Brazilian fighters. What they oughta do is come up with a separate division rename it as “No Holds Bar” or “Vale Tudo” and allow the same rules as Pride.

I am surprised that the UFC has not gotten sued yet for antitrust laws. When they bought Strikeforce, it sure seemed like that would happen.

@ukranian
I forget what the actual legal term for it is. But it’s the same thing that allows for the NBA, MLB, NFL, etc.
They technically don’t prevent anyone from entering the market. They just crush anyone who opposes them like insects. God Bless capitalism ![]()
